Local Cat Lover Georgina Raises Over $29K mxn For Humane Society of Cozumel

On Saturday December 5th, local resident, triathlete, and self-professed cat lover, Georgina Ortega Vera Kentzler, ran a full marathon (42.2 km) to raise funds for the Humane Society of Cozumel. What’s so incredible is that Georgina is only 21 years old and this was her first full marathon she has ever completed. What’s more is that she ran it alone in 3 ½ hours, and raised a total of $29,765 pesos!

Georgina began getting into long distance running 8 years ago. She quickly found that she loved running, and started signing up for ½ marathons and ½ Ironman competitions. This year she challenged herself to do a full marathon for the first time and registered for an event in Cancun. But when the event was canceled due to the pandemic, instead of throwing in the towel, she decided she was going to run anyway- right here in her hometown. That’s when her mom suggested she choose a cause and they decided on the Humane Society. “When I started to learn about the HS I realized their work and their job is so important for this island. There are so many animals left alone in the streets and they take them, feed them, and sterilize them. If they didn’t exist the whole island would be overrun with animals reproducing. I think this is so important to help take care of the community.”

Georgina is thrilled with the amount of funds raised as it well surpassed her expectations. She credits her success to her supportive parents, especially her dad who got up for 5am practice runs every Saturday. What’s Georgina set her sights on next? She is training to compete in her first full Ironman competition, and hopes to do so in 2-3 years. We know that she will crush it!
