Prominent Doctor of Archaeology, Victor Hugo Ruiz Ortiz, recently paid a visit to Cozumel to tour San Gervasio. Doctor Ruiz Ortiz, who had previously studied the San Gervasio site, chose to visit on a very important day in the Mayan culture, the spring equinox. The word “equinox” is derived from the Latin word ” Aequinoctium, ” which means “equal night.” Equinoxes occur twice a year, Spring and Fall, when the length of both day and night are of equal duration. Doctor Ruiz Ortiz believes that the Mayan ruins here in Cozumel could be part of a large observatory created during the height of the Mayan civilization, especially since the Mayans were known to be very interested in astronomy. The professor also went on to say that the area has so much potential, since not all of the ruins have been excavated. He further urged the INAH ( National Institute of Anthropology and History) and UNESCO ( United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) to take appropriate action to preserve these treasures.
Doctor Victor Hugo Ruiz Ortiz holds a PhD in Archaeology from the the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. He is currently a visiting professor at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), member of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Centre for Energy, Environment and Technology (CIEMAT). Previously, he worked for 5 years in the INAH.

Son orgullosos padres de diversos perros y gatos rescatados. Mientras contempla su paso a través de la vida en el Caribe mexicano,Laura continúa siendo la pesadilla en la existencia de su muy tradicional suegra mexicana.
