In a recent press conference Councilman Cesar Trejo Vázquez, Chairman of the Committee on Tourism and Ecology announced that plans to create the first natural aquarium in the State using the infamous Cousteau ship “Calypso” are under consideration.

Jacques Yves Cousteau, the famous underwater explorer, was one of the early proponents of Cozumel, and last year his son, Jean Michel accepted an award on his behalf, and also succumbed to Cozumel’s charms.

If the project is approved, the Calypso would be sunk in the southern part of the island, near Puerta Maya.  Jean Michel Cousteau will be visiting the island July 4th, when a decision could be reached.
