Last weekend Cozumel hosted the 8th annual of the Cozumel Island Bird Festival.  This event, which was the largest festival to date, sought to promote birding as form of sustainable tourism on the island, and at the same time sensitizing the island community on the value birds in the island’s ecosystem.

According to local biologist, Rafael Chacon, Cozumel hosts more than 80 species of birds during their annual migration.  As winter arrives in North America many birds choose to follow the thermals south, taking refuge in the warmer climes and coastal lagoons that Cozumel has to offer.    Biologist Chacon went on to further state that at one point in time Cozumel has been visited by more than 240 different types of birds.

Included in the Festival were workshops, photo expositions, conferences, bird walks and more.  For more
