Outgoing Cozumel Rotary President Ernesto Alvarez Re-caps The Past Year’s Projects
It has been a distinct honor to serve in the position of President of this Rotary Club of Cozumel Mexico. My fellow Rotarians have shown me what we can accomplish when we work as a team with selfless ambition.
Under the guidance of one of my personal heroes, Captain Jose Alvarez, we have been able to provide assistance to a great deal of the Cozumel community. With Lic. Doris Uribe at my side, I had the confidence to pursue beyond my own ability. Alex Franco provided me with the knowledge and experience of a seasoned Rotarian. He was my life line. Isaac’s determination and the success of the hortalizas project proved invaluable in today’s time. One thing was for certain. We stayed busy.
During the Rotary year, we emphasized health and started the year by establishing the Hepatitis Zero Campaign.
In alliance with the Municipal Health Subdirector we formed the diabetic club focusing on a terrible disease that deteriorates the quality and ends lives.
Like every year we carry out our traditional Polio Marathon bringing closer the eradication from our planet.Finally and after many years of work, we inaugurated the hyperbaric chamber at the red cross Cozumel to serve the low-income community.
We continued with the RITE program and we promoted music and culture through the delivery of musical instruments for the Cozumel symphonic band community musical group, Cozumel pride!
As every year, we continued the Foreign Exchange Student Program involving entire families and bringing our young p
eople closer to other young people from different cultures, customs and countries.
I had the great pleasure of accompanying Alex Frano to receive a recognition of community service. In a determined effort to achieve a sustainable garden, we gave courses at the Community Vegetable Garden Project.
We raised funds through the sale of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.
And a big effort was made in making friends with our sister organizations in Texas. I thank the CrossTimbers and the Greenville sister clubs who had great leadership through Katy Ridge. Dallas Rotary Club, Pioneer Rotary Club and Past Governor Bill Dendy also welcomed me and led me to meet new clubs. Special thanks to all these members of Texas Rotary for their many contributions to benefit the island community.
Security and safety is an issue that was not left aside and that is why we started the Vigilant Neighborhood program.
Education has also been a big part of our work as we conducted a Raffle to deliver scholarships for education, Thank you to Karla Catzin past president for starting a vision for this endevour.
We were visited by the District Governor
I would like to thank everyone for the unstoppable support for CAM Laboral, CAED and CBETIS schools.
This years Rotaract president Estela did an extraordinary job organizing the 2019 Oktoberfest and also the collection and delivery of the “smile gift” toys.
With great affection we carried out the donation of equipment and materials for health week for high school students who participated and supported in the race “All united by disability”,
This years creation of the CAED computer lab was also significant.
Aware of the needs of doctors, nurses and hospital staff, we delivered equipment to the islands public hospitals to protect them from COVID-19
We deliver pantries to families in need and now we will support community kitchens that are doing a heartfelt job of helping the community, my appreciation to them!
We participate in different committees that are changing to cozumel like the
Cozumel Reef National Park Advisory Council and the
Municipal Health Committee,
I also want to thank all the people who have supported us and trusted every member of the club. Without you we would not be here and Mayor Pedro Joaquin honorary member of the club who has had the great certainty of supporting our organization and working hand in hand. Without his help the Diabetic club would not be working.
And well, what can I say about my family who has supported me throughout. They gave me the needs to dedicate myself and the support to continue. My daughter Bianca’s Germany exchange 7 years ago was my introduction to Rotary. To my partner Lisa, we are in a relationship that is worth it when each interaction we have is to improve our lives and those around us.
In these difficult times in our lives we are grateful for the things that we consider common and appreciate these moments and the connection with people who make us better. That is why I thank my friends who helped me every day. We congratulate all the media and their actions of promoting our clubs work. Thanks to you we continue to be informed throughout this pandemic.
And I’m not forgetting the power couple who will continue the work done by the people who came before them. We could not have chosen a better President for the year 2020-2021. Victor Pineda and Amy Quintal, his wife. Both have been active Rotarians for many years. My greatest admiration to them both.

Ernesto Álvarez, presidente saliente del Club Rotarios, hace un recuento de los proyectos del año pasado
Ha sido un gran honor ocupar el cargo de presidente del Club Rotarios de Cozumel, México. Mis colegas rotarios me han mostrado lo que podemos lograr cuando desinteresadamente trabajamos como equipo.
Bajo la guía de uno de mis héroes personales, el Capitán José Álvarez, hemos logrado ayudar a una gran parte de la población de Cozumel. Con la Lic. Doris Uribe a mi lado, tuve la confianza de ir más allá de mis propias capacidades. Alex Franco compartió conmigo el conocimiento y la experiencia de un avezado miembro de Rotarios. Fue mi salvavidas. La determinación de Isaac y el éxito del proyecto de las hortalizas probaron ser invaluables en estos tiempos. Una cosa es cierta: nos mantuvimos ocupados.
Durante el año Rotario, hicimos énfasis en la salud y comenzamos el año estableciendo la Campaña Cero Hepatitis.
En alianza con el subdirector de la Dirección Municipal de Salud, formamos el club de diabéticos concentrándonos en la terrible enfermedad que deteriora y termina la vida de muchos.
Como lo hacemos todos los años, el Maratón Contra la Polio ayudó aún más a erradicarla del planeta. Finalmente y después de muchos años de trabajo, inauguramos la cámara hiperbárica en la Cruz Roja de Cozumel para dar servicio a la población de escasos recursos.
Dimos continuidad al programa RITE y promovimos la música y la cultura entregando instrumentos musicales a la Agrupación Musical Comunitaria Banda Sinfónica de Cozumel, ¡orgullo de Cozumel!
Como todos los años, continuamos con el Programa de Intercambio de Estudiantes haciendo participar a familias enteras y acercando más a nuestros jóvenes con jóvenes de distintas culturas, costumbres y países.
Tuve el gran placer de acompañar a Alex Franco en la recepción de un reconocimiento por su labor en la comunidad. En un decidido esfuerzo para lograr un jardín sostenible, impartimos cursos a través del Proyecto Comunitario de Hortalizas.
Recaudamos fondos a través de la venta de donas Krispy Kreme.
Y se hizo un gran esfuerzo para amigarnos con nuestras organizaciones hermanas en Texas. doy las gracias a los clubes Cross Timbers y Greenville bajo el gran liderazgo de Katy Ridge. Dallas Rotary Club, Pioneer Rotary Club y el ex gobernador Bill Dendy también me dieron la bienvenida y me orientaron para conocer clubes nuevos. Un agradecimiento especial a todos estos miembros de Texas Rotary por sus muchas aportaciones en beneficio de la comunidad de la Isla. La seguridad es un problema que no se ha abandonado y por ello comenzamos el programa de Vecinos Vigilantes.
La educación también ha sido gran parte de nuestra labor ya que realizamos una rifa para la entrega de becas para educación. Gracias Karla Catzin, nuestra e presidenta, por dar inicio a la visión de este esfuerzo.
Recibimos la visita del Gobernador de Distrito.
Quiero agradecer a todos por su imparable apoyo a CAM Laboral, a las escuelas CAED y CBETIS.
Estela, presidenta este año para Rotaract, hizo un trabajo extraordinario organizando el Oktoberfest 2019 así como la recolecta y entrega de los juguetes para “regala una sonrisa”.
Con gran cariño llevamos a cabo la donación de equipo y materiales parala semana de salud para estudiantes de preparatoria que participaron y brindaron su apoyo a la carrera “Todos Unidos por la Discapacidad”.
La creación del laboratorio informático de CAED este año, también fue importante.
Sabedores de las necesidades de los médicos, enfermeras y personal de los hospitales, entregamos equipo a los hospitales públicos de la Isla para su protección del COVID-19.
Entregamos despensas a familias con necesidades y apoyaremos a las cocinas que realizan una labor sincera al ayudar a la comunidad. ¡Mi agradecimiento a ellas!
Participamos en distintos comités que están creando el cambio en Cozumel como el Consejo Asesor del Parque Nacional de Arrecifes de Cozumel y el Comité Municipal de Salud.
Asimismo, quiero dar las gracias a todas las personas que nos han apoyado y que han confiado en cada miembro del Club. Sin ustedes no estaríamos aquí, al igual que al alcalde Pedro Joaquín, miembro honorario del Club, quien con gran certidumbre ha dado su apoyo y colaborado con nuestra organización. Sin su ayuda, el Club de Diabéticos no estaría operando.
Y, bueno, qué puedo decir de mi familia quien me ha apoyado durante todo este tiempo. Me dieron lo que necesitaba para poder dedicarme, así como su continuo apoyo. El intercambio de mi hija Bianca con Alemania hace 7 años, fue mi introducción a Rotary. A mi compañera Lisa, compartimos una relación que vale mucho, cuando cada interacción que tenemos es para mejorar nuestras vidas y la de quienes nos rodean.
En estos tiempos difíciles en nuestras vidas, damos las gracias por las cosas que consideramos comunes y apreciamos estos momentos y la conexión con las personas que nos hacen ser mejores. Es por ello que doy las gracias a mis amigos quienes me ayudaron todos los días. Felicitamos a todos los medios y sus acciones al promover la labor que realizan nuestros Clubes. Gracias a ustedes continuamos obteniendo información durante esta pandemia.
Y no olvido a la poderosa pareja que continuará la labor de las personas que los precedieron. No podríamos haber elegido mejor presidente para el año 2020 – 2021, Víctor Pineda y Amy Quintal, su esposa. Ambos han sido activos miembros en Rotarios durante muchos años. Mi mayor admiración a ambos.
Me despido con el lema rotario de mi año: Rotary CONECTA.

Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años. Laura escapó al Caribe hace años, desplazándose de una isla a otra dando clases de BUCEO. Se dedicó a perder el tiempo en Jamaica y finalmente se detuvo en Cozumel para pasar unas vacaciones de 2 semanas que aún no terminan. Convenciendo a sus padres que pagaran una elegante universidad privada, obtuvo su título en Periodismo y Laura crea semanalmente Cozumel 4You, medios sociales y artículos promocionales sobre la Isla y también es moderadora en el grupo Cozumel 4 You en Facebook que actualmente cuenta con 25,000 miembros. Fabián, s umuy tolerante marido, desde hace mucho tiempo se resignó a no tener vida privada, pues se ha visto implicado en los diversos proyectos y planes que urde Laura. Son orgullosos padres de diversos perros y gatos rescatados. Mientras contempla su paso a través de la vida en el Caribe mexicano,Laura continúa siendo la pesadilla en la existencia de su muy tradicional suegra mexicana.
