Call Cozumel Home

How I came to call Cozumel Home

A series by island residents:  Jorge Gonzalez

I was born on this beautiful island in the year 1979.  At that time, Cozumel was a quiet place, not nearly as crowded as it is today, and life was much more simple. An island of fisherman, quiet working people, a real community where everyone knew everyone else.  We walked around freely and respected everyone, especially since they probably knew your parents and would tell them the next time they saw them if you weren’t.

A lot of my childhood centered around the malecon, with it’s beautiful sunset views.  I remember fishing off the end of the fiscal pier.  If you’re from the island, you had to have done this, at some point in your life.  We also used to spring off the end of the pier and jump into the ocean, everybody did it, and there were tons of people just watching us all having fun.  Another one of my favorite memories is camping on the other side of the island.  Under giant full moons we would sit around bonfires, and enjoy the beach.

I remember all the people who sat along the boardwalk on weekends, and hearing all different kinds of music coming out of the variety of bars that were on the island,  all very loud and festive and one for each person’s different tastes.

In late 2003 I left Cozumel to attend university on the United States.  I missed the warmth of the island, the people and my friends.  It was really nice to cherish that I had indeed grown up in a very special and beautiful place.

In late 2010,  I returned to my island home, and to be honest, I was very sad to see some of the changes.  There’s new buildings that block sunset views, it’s prohibited to jump or fish off the downtown pier, and it just doesn’t feel as lively as it used to.  One thing, I am so very pleased to see that hasn’t changed at all is the people.

Although there are tons more residents now, the polite and respectful nature of the island residents remains the same.  People take the time to talk, and ask about my parents and my family when I move through my day.  I think that even with a lot of the “development and improvements” you can still find a lot of the original old world charm, that is such an important part of where I grew up.
