It’s hard to believe that we are already into April and that the island is already booking and looking forward to the annual fishing tournament the Rodeo de las Lanchas Mexicanas.  Although there are other competitions throughout the year, this is by far the largest.  The only thing that changes is the actual dates, but it’s always the second weekend in May; which happens to be the 11th and 12th this year (Saturday and Sunday).  This event is one of the island’s biggest  (aside from Carnaval) for local participation (there is usually well over 100 boats) full of anxious fishermen.  Boats entered can be of just about any size (not that any one checks actual regulation size of the boats).  There is also a large number of boats that come from other Mexican ports, and even internationally.

It is 7,000 pesos to enter,  and the prizes are big.  There are 5 trucks or vehicles as well as money.  The tournament is heavily sponsored by big names such as Carlos-N-Charlies, AvioMar, TransCaribe, Coke, Sol, Mexico Waterjets and Chankanaab, just to name a few.  Albatros Charters has 2 boats to enter into the tournament (one already filled) and all we need are for some happy, eager fishermen to reel in those big fish.   We haven’t heard the rules yet, but some of the other port towns are going with catch-and-release, provided you have video proof.  Come aboard for the thrill of a lifetime and a chance and some very fine winnings!

We’ll see you in May!  If you are not out on the water helping reel the fish in there is always a crowd on the downtown ferry pier at weigh in time.  You can collect your friends and go be a part of the excitement of the weigh-ins each day.

Albatros Charters is a premier water sports business, located right here in Cozumel, bringing you great fishing..great diving….great snorkeling… and great sunset trips!  For more information, check out their webpage
