For several weeks now I’ve been hearing stories about a Canadian couple that has made it their mission to clean areas of the island that have been saturated with trash. Most notably, the centoe which is located near the upper parking lot of Puerto Abrigo. That area had sadly become a bit of a dumping ground, and this couple had taken it upon themselves to not only clean up the area, set aside the materials suitable for recycling but even installed trash cans to keep the area clean in the future.
I was intrigued, and made it my mission to find out more about them. I say mission, because getting them to sit down for an interview proved to be a bit of challenge because they didn’t stop at the centoe. They’ve cleaned other areas up north, and spend several hours a day “paying it forward.”
In fact, they were adamant that the story I told not be about a lovely couple who care about the planet, and the area that they live, but they wanted the focus to be on inspiring others to do the same.
“Cozumel is a beautiful island, and just imagine how much more beautiful it would be trash free.” Inspired by comments from other island visitors about the refuse, they got up, picked up rakes, gloves and trash bags, and got to work.

the hundreds of beer bottles they collected.
So far, no one has jumped in to join them, but people stop all the time, and ask what they’re doing and why. They’ve been offered a few sodas and some water, but that’s about the extent of their support. When I asked them about it, they said they were too busy cleaning to ask, but hoped that their work, and clean areas would inspire others.
I asked them how other island residents could help. They said they’d be happy to accept trash bags or additional tools, but suggested that anyone with a few extra hours and some willing help, could get in touch with me – through Cozumel 4 You – or Arturo from HazloHoy – and pitch in or their current project, or – even better – clean an area of their own.
I have to admit that I was inspired by this duo, who already have their next location, picked out and hope to get started soon, especially when they later sent me a message that ended with “Lets make this island the paradise that it is”.

Desde hace varias semanas he venido escuchando historias sobre una pareja de canadienses que han hecho que su misión sea limpiar zonas de la Isla saturadas con basura; muy en especial el cenote localizado cerca del estacionamiento en alto del Puerto de Abrigo. Lamentablemente esa área se ha convertido en un tiradero, y esta pareja ha asumido el compromiso no solo de limpiar la zona, separar los materiales adecuados para reciclar, sino que también han colocado botes de basura con el objeto de mantener limpia el área para el futuro.
Estaba intrigada y me propuse que mi misión era averiguar más acerca de ellos. Digo “mi misión” ya que sentarlos para una entrevista probó ser un reto ya que no pararon tan solo en el cenote. Han limpiado otras áreas del norte, y han pasado varias horas “retribuyendo”.
De hecho, fueron categóricos al pedir que la historia que se contara no fuera de una encantadora parea que se preocupa por el planeta y por la zona en la que viven, sino que querían que la atención se centrara en inspirar a otros a hacer lo mismo.
“Cozumel es una bella isla; tan sólo imaginen cuanto más bella sería si no tuviera basura”. Inspirados por los comentarios que otros visitantes han hecho sobre los desechos, tomaron la decisión, con rastrillo en mano, guantes y bolsas de basura, y se pusieron a trabajar.
Cuando concluyeron la limpieza del cenote, se pusieron en contacto con Arturo de Hazlo Hoy. A Arturo le fue necesario pedir prestado una camioneta para retirar los cientos de botellas de cerveza que habían recolectado.
Hasta el momento nadie se ha ofrecido participar con ellos; y con frecuencia la gente se detiene y pregunta qué están haciendo y por qué. El máximo apoyo que han tenido es que les han ofrecido unos refrescos y agua. Cuando les pregunté acerca de ello, me dijeron que estaban demasiado ocupados limpiando como para pedir ayuda, y esperaban que su labor inspirara a otros a limpiar áreas.
Pregunté de qué manera podrían ayudarles otros habitantes de la Isla. Dijeron que con gusto aceptarán bolsas para basura o herramientas adicionales, pero sugirieron que toda persona que cuente con algunas horas extra y deseos de ayudar, que se ponga en contacto conmigo a través de Cozumel 4 You o con Arturo de Hazlo Hoy, y eche una mano en el proyecto en el que actualmente trabajan o, mejor aún, que limpie su propia área.
Admito que me inspiró este dúo que ya eligió su siguiente sitio para limpiar y espero comenzar en poco tiempo, en especial cuando después recibí un mensaje de su parte que finalizaba diciendo: “Hagamos de esta Isla el paraíso que es”.

Fabián, s umuy tolerante marido, desde hace mucho tiempo se resignó a no tener vida privada, pues se ha visto implicado en los diversos proyectos y planes que urde Laura. Son orgullosos padres de diversos perros y gatos rescatados. Mientras contempla su paso a través de la vida en el Caribe mexicano,Laura continúa siendo la pesadilla en la existencia de su muy tradicional suegra mexicana.
