Cozumel Elects New Mayor

Pedro Joaquin Delbouis Wins …..

Cozumel residents took to the voting booths over the weekend and elected a new Mayor and new national President.  Pedro Joaquin Delbouis is Cozumel’s Mayor-Elect, and is currently a member of the PRI ( Partido Revolucionario Institucional, or Institutional Revolutionary Party in English)    It is interesting to note that Pedro Joaquin’s father previously served as the Governor for the State of Quintana Roo.  He is only 39 years of age and was born here on the island, and has been President of CANACO,Coparmex and Fedetur.

Of the nearly 61,000 citizens who compose Cozumel’s electorial roll,  just over 60% turned out to exercise their right to vote.

On the national level, Mexicans elected Andrés Manuel López Obrador.  According to an article in the Washington Post:  “López Obrador, 64, is the first leftist in decades to be elected president of Mexico. He won around 53 percent of the vote, 30 percentage points more than the second-place candidate, Ricardo Anaya.”

Although the winners will not assume their duties for over 3 months, both candidates will be busily preparing for their new posts.

Cozumel elije un nuevo alcalde

Gana Pedro Joaquín Delbouis. . .
