Colder temperatures are being attributed to the increase in patients seeking treatment for respiratory symptoms associated with colds, flu and seasonal allergies. Island healthcare workers are reporting a higher influx of people – especially the young and the elderly – who are seeking treatment for a variety of infirmities generally attributed to January’s colder temperatures and breezy weather.

According to the Director of the General Hospital, most of the cases they are seeing are viral in nature, meaning rest and plenty of fluids is generally the best medicine. Additionally,  residents are urged to avoid self-medicating, since many over-the-counter medications can often mask a bacterial infection which should be treated under a physician’s care.
