IRONMAN Cozumel 2025: Schedules, Route, and Road Closures

As every year, Cozumel declares itself ready for IRONMAN 2025. This Sunday, November 23, the “Island of Sport” will welcome elite athletes and age-group competitors aiming to make their mark on one of the fastest circuits in the world.

If you are a competitor, family member, or resident, here is the essential information:

Schedule at Chankanaab Park:

5:00 AM: Transition zone opens.

6:30 AM: PRO category start.

6:40 – 7:00 AM: Rolling Start for Age Groups.

2:00 – 3:00 PM: Estimated arrival of the winner.

12:00 AM: Official finish line cutoff.

The Circuit: Technical Challenges While the route is famous for its fast times, it presents unique natural challenges:

Swim (3.8 km): Held at Chankanaab in a point-to-point format. It is distinguished by crystal-clear water and currents that historically favor swimmer speed.

Bike (180 km): Three laps around the island. Although the profile is flat, the difficulty lies in the wind—specifically on the eastern coast (the “wild side”)—where crosswinds demand maximum aerodynamics and consistent pedaling.

Run (42.2 km): Three laps along Av. Rafael E. Melgar and the northern hotel zone. The finish line will be located in front of the Municipal Palace (Benito Juárez Park).

Pre-Race Agenda and Logistics:

Thursday 20 & Friday 21: Registration and Expo at the Convention Center.

Saturday 22: IRONKIDS (morning) and mandatory Bike Check-In.

Sunday 23: Race Day.

Monday 24: Awards Ceremony and slot allocation for the 2026 World Championship.

Traffic Advisory: Road Closures for Sunday the 23rd The Traffic Department urges the public to take precautions:

• Southern Hotel Zone & Perimetral Road: Closed from 5:00 AM to approx. 5:00 PM. No access to east side beaches or southern beach clubs.
• Av. Rafael E. Melgar (Malecón): Closed from 5:00 AM to midnight, from Puerta Maya to the northern hotel zone.
• Alternate Routes: To travel north to south, use 30th and 65th Avenues. Avoid attempting to cross toward the ocean in the downtown area.

Merchants Allege Conditioning of Licenses and Lack of Municipal Empathy

Amid the sporting activity, tenants of the craft market have expressed dissatisfaction regarding recent directives from the Municipal General Secretariat and Urban Development. The guild accuses these agencies of making the renewal of operating licenses conditional on the removal of merchandise from public walkways.

Jorge Poblano, a market vendor, noted that authorities are requiring merchants to refrain from displaying products outside their shops as a prerequisite for administrative paperwork. The conflict centers on a “commitment letter” requested by the Department of Urban Image to authorize commercial signage, which forces vendors to move all merchandise inside their establishments.

Poblano described the measure as “illogical,” arguing that it coerces the sector and impacts their income by reducing product visibility.

Merchants cite a lack of empathy from the General Secretary, from whom they expected support. Following a meeting that yielded no solutions, the sector is seeking a direct dialogue with Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez. The tenants’ representative emphasized that eliminating outdoor displays contradicts the image of a “Pueblo Mágico” (Magical Town) and the customs of a syndicate with 50 years of history.

Additionally, they pointed out deficiencies in public services, such as the denial of parking spaces and disorganized afternoon trash collection.

WTTS 2025: Technology and Tourism Converge in Cozumel

This coming November 26 and 27, the Convention Center will become the most important meeting point for the hospitality industry. There is still time to register for the WTTS (World Tourism Trends Summit) and participate in the 2025 edition. Organized by the Federation of Tourism Entrepreneurs (FETUR), the event goes beyond a traditional trade fair to establish itself as a high-tech forum centered on “Tourism Sovereignty.”

The program prioritizes practical utility. A highlight includes the lecture by Rolando Castañón (Nova Code), “How to Detect Smoke in AI,” which will offer tools to distinguish real solutions from marketing hype. Bernardo Castañeda (Stripe) will also participate, addressing digital payment infrastructure, alongside speakers from Huawei and Canva.

On the strategic front, Dr. Nathalie Desplas (Federal SECTUR) will present the national tourism outlook, while Margarita Carbajal (National FETUR) will delve into the internal value chain. Topics such as the digitization of “Pueblos Mágicos” and crisis management complete the agenda.

Cozumel is experiencing a week of contrasts. On one hand, it consolidates its international profile with events like IRONMAN and WTTS; on the other, it faces internal tension between the City Council and the commercial sector due to new regulations and public service issues.

Como cada año, Cozumel se declara lista para el IRONMAN 2025. Este domingo 23 de noviembre, la “Isla del Deporte” recibirá a atletas de élite y competidores por grupos de edad que buscarán destacar en uno de los circuitos más rápidos del mundo.

Cronograma en Parque Chankanaab:

5:00 AM: Apertura de zona de transición.

6:30 AM: Inicio categoría PRO.

6:40 – 7:00 AM: Salida Rolling Start para Grupos por Edad.

2:00 – 3:00 PM: Llegada estimada del primer lugar.

12:00 AM: Cierre oficial de la meta.

El Circuito: Desafíos Técnicos Aunque la ruta es famosa por sus tiempos veloces, presenta retos naturales únicos:

Natación (3.8 km): En Chankanaab. Formato punto a punto. Se distingue por la claridad del agua y corrientes que históricamente favorecen la velocidad del nadador.

¡Atención Ciudadana! Cierres Viales para el Domingo 23 La Dirección de Tránsito exhorta a tomar precauciones:

Zona Hotelera Sur y Perimetral: Cerrada de 5:00 AM a 5:00 PM (aprox). Sin acceso a playas del lado este ni clubes del sur.

Av. Rafael E. Melgar (Malecón): Cerrada de 5:00 AM a la medianoche, desde Puerta Maya hasta la zona hotelera norte.

Vías Alternas: Para transitar de norte a sur, utilice la 30 y 65 Avenida. Evite cruzar hacia el mar en el centro.

Comerciantes denuncian condicionamiento de licencias y falta de empatía municipal.

En medio de la actividad deportiva, locatarios del mercado de artesanías han expresado su inconformidad ante las recientes disposiciones de la Secretaría General Municipal y Desarrollo Urbano. El gremio acusa a estas dependencias de condicionar la renovación de licencias de funcionamiento al retiro de mercancía de la vía pública.

Jorge Poblano, vendedor del mercado, señaló que las autoridades exigen abstenerse de exhibir productos fuera de los locales como requisito para los trámites administrativos. El conflicto radica en una “carta compromiso” solicitada por la Dirección de Fisonomía Urbana para autorizar letreros comerciales, la cual obliga a ingresar toda la mercancía al interior de los establecimientos.

Poblano calificó la medida de “ilógica”, argumentando que coacciona al sector y afecta sus ingresos al disminuir la visibilidad de sus productos.

Existe una falta de empatia hacia la secretaria general, de quien esperaban respaldo. Tras una reunión sin soluciones, el sector busca un diálogo directo con el alcalde José Luis Chacón Méndez. El representante de los locatarios enfatizó que eliminar la exhibición contraviene la imagen de “Pueblo Mágico” y los usos y costumbres de un sindicato con 50 años de historia.

Además, señalaron deficiencias en servicios públicos, como la negativa de espacios para estacionamiento y el desorden en la recolección de basura vespertina.

WTTS 2025: Tecnología y Turismo convergen en Cozumel
