Over 2,000 Athletes From 81 Countries Rocked Cozumel’s Full Ironman Event!

Cozumel was buzzing this past weekend as over 2,000 athletes from all corners of the globe gathered for the 17th edition of the Full Ironman competition. Athletes from 81 countries, some all the way from Iceland, came to the island to push themselves to the limit on Sunday, November 23rd.

Elías Farah Ceh, the Director of Tourism and Economic Development, shared that this year’s event saw a solid 2,000+ participants. “There were a few temporary street closures during the race, but the perks of hosting something like this go far beyond that day,” he said. “The real magic happens when participants share videos and photos of Cozumel’s beauty all over social media, giving us some amazing (and free) publicity!” He went on to highlight how the event has helped transform Cozumel’s traditionally quiet low season into what’s now known as “sports season”—with hotels seeing a big spike in bookings and tourists flocking to the island.

The race kicked off bright and early at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday at the Cozumel Marina, with 2,078 triathletes lining up for the challenge. The athletes came from 1,238 cities across the world, with women making up 19% of the competitors and men taking the majority with 81%. According to event organizers, this year’s race included around 100 pro triathletes, making it a highly competitive field.

The countries that showed the most love for the race were Mexico, the U.S., Canada, Germany, and Brazil—proving once again that Cozumel’s Full Ironman is a world-class event that attracts top talent from all over.

It was an incredible weekend that not only showcased the island’s natural beauty but also put Cozumel on the global stage as a premier destination for sports tourism.

Cozumel estuvo a tope este fin de semana con más de 2,000 atletas de todo el mundo, que se dieron cita para la 17ª edición del Ironman Completo. Atletas de 81 países, algunos tan lejanos como Islandia, viajaron a la isla para ponerse a prueba el domingo 23 de noviembre.

Elías Farah Ceh, Director de Turismo y Desarrollo Económico, comentó que este año participaron poco más de 2,000 personas. “Hubo algunas calles cerradas temporalmente durante el evento, pero los beneficios de tener este tipo de competiciones aquí van mucho más allá de ese día”, dijo. “Lo verdaderamente mágico es cuando los participantes comparten videos y fotos de la belleza de Cozumel en sus redes sociales, dándonos una publicidad increíble (¡y gratuita!)”. Además, destacó cómo este tipo de eventos ha ayudado a transformar la temporada baja de ocupación hotelera en lo que hoy se conoce como “temporada deportiva”, lo que ha resultado en un gran aumento en la ocupación de los hoteles.

La carrera comenzó puntualmente a las 7:00 a.m. del domingo en la Marina de Cozumel, con 2,078 triatletas listos para el desafío. Los competidores llegaron de 1,238 ciudades alrededor del mundo, con las mujeres representando el 19% de los participantes y los hombres el 81%. Según los organizadores del evento, este año hubo alrededor de 100 triatletas profesionales, lo que hizo que la competencia fuera aún más emocionante.

Los países con mayor representación fueron México, Estados Unidos, Canadá, Alemania y Brasil, lo que demuestra una vez más que el Ironman Completo de Cozumel es un evento de clase mundial que atrae a los mejores talentos de todo el planeta.
