Migrant Humanity: An Exhibition on Migration and Solidarity in Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo, September 2025 – The Island Museum opened its doors to the exhibition Migrant Humanity, by international artist Enrique Chiu. This traveling project comes to Cozumel to share a profound reflection on the migration phenomenon through art.

The exhibition brings together paintings, photography, installations, and audiovisual materials that invite visitors to learn, through a sensitive lens, about the experiences of those who have left their homes in search of a better future. Inspired by the Brotherhood Mural, a monumental work that transformed a section of the border wall between Mexico and the United States into a symbol of peace and solidarity, this exhibition connects local and global stories with a common thread: the search for dignity and opportunity.

Art as a Bridge.

In an interview during the opening, Enrique Chiu explained that Migrant Humanity is informed by the work of a network of artists from different regions of Mexico who, through painting, sculpture, and photography, have captured their interpretations of migration.

“It’s a traveling exhibition that travels from city to city, bringing not only images but also the voices and experiences of those who have faced migration. What we are inaugurating here in Cozumel represents years of work and collaboration,” Chiu noted.

The artist also emphasized that the project has been in development for more than ten years. During that time, the collectively painted border mural became a space for expression for migrants, volunteers, and human rights defenders. Some of those stories can now be seen in the canvases and photographs that make up the exhibition.

A documentary that complements the experience.

One of the central elements of the exhibition is the documentary A World Without Walls, directed by Alejandro Argüelles Benítez and produced by Chiu himself. The film portrays the creation process of the Brotherhood Mural and brings together testimonies from migrants and artists who participated in the project.

This audiovisual material has been presented in 11 countries, embassies, film festivals, and universities, and is now part of the experience that visitors to the Island Museum can enjoy free of charge.

Leaving a Mark on the Cozumel Community.

In addition to the indoor exhibition, Chiu left a mural in the center of the island as part of the Corazón Migrante initiative. The work can be seen a few blocks from the boardwalk, in front of the El Toro Rojo restaurant, and symbolizes the connection with the local community.

“In each place where we exhibit, we leave a mural, a kind of symbolic message of unity with the people of the place that welcomes us,” the artist shared.

The Artist’s Career.

Originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Enrique Chiu currently resides in Tijuana and has an extensive international career: more than 600 exhibitions in Mexico and abroad—247 solo and 519 group exhibitions—, participation in 80 cultural festivals, and the creation of more than 460 murals for causes. His work has been included in textbooks and academic materials, reinforcing the social and educational impact of his projects.

Invitation to the Community.

The Migrant Humanity exhibition will remain open until October 13, 2025, on the upper floor of the Island Museum. Admission is free, and public access is available Tuesday through Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In Chiu’s own words, more than an exhibition, it is a tribute to those who, despite adversity, continue to walk in search of a dignified life.

“Talking about migration is a global and sensitive issue. What we propose with this exhibition is a space for reflection and, above all, to promote a culture of peace,” he expressed.

Cozumel, Quintana Roo, septiembre de 2025. – El Museo de la Isla abrió sus puertas a la exposición Humanidad Migrante, del artista internacional Enrique Chiu, un proyecto itinerante que llega a Cozumel para compartir una profunda reflexión sobre el fenómeno migratorio a través del arte.

La muestra reúne pintura, fotografía, instalaciones y material audiovisual que invitan a los visitantes a conocer, desde una mirada sensible, las experiencias de quienes han dejado atrás sus hogares en busca de un futuro mejor. Inspirada en el Mural de la Hermandad, obra monumental que convirtió un tramo del muro fronterizo entre México y Estados Unidos en un símbolo de paz y solidaridad, esta exposición conecta historias locales y globales con un mismo hilo: la búsqueda de dignidad y oportunidades.

El arte como puente

En entrevista durante la inauguración, Enrique Chiu explicó que Humanidad Migrante se nutre del trabajo de una red de artistas de distintas regiones de México que, a través de pintura, escultura y fotografía, han plasmado sus interpretaciones de la migración.
“Es una exposición itinerante que viaja de ciudad en ciudad, llevando no solo imágenes, sino también las voces y vivencias de quienes han enfrentado la migración. Lo que inauguramos aquí en Cozumel representa años de trabajo y colaboración”, señaló Chiu.

El artista también subrayó que el proyecto tiene ya más de diez años de desarrollo. Durante ese tiempo, el mural fronterizo pintado colectivamente se convirtió en espacio de expresión para migrantes, voluntarios y defensores de derechos humanos. Parte de esas historias ahora pueden apreciarse en los lienzos y fotografías que integran la exposición.

Un documental que complementa la experiencia

Uno de los elementos centrales de la muestra es el documental Un Mundo Sin Muros, dirigido por Alejandro Argüelles Benítez y producido por el propio Chiu. La película retrata el proceso de creación del Mural de la Hermandad y reúne testimonios de migrantes y artistas que participaron en el proyecto.
Este material audiovisual ha sido presentado en 11 países, embajadas, festivales de cine y universidades, y ahora forma parte de la experiencia que los visitantes del Museo de la Isla pueden disfrutar de manera gratuita.

Huella en la comunidad cozumeleña

Además de la exposición en sala, Chiu dejó un mural en el centro de la isla como parte de la iniciativa Corazón Migrante. La obra puede verse a unas cuadras del malecón, frente al restaurante El Toro Rojo, y simboliza la conexión con la comunidad local.
“En cada lugar donde llevamos la exposición dejamos un mural, una especie de mensaje simbólico de unión con la gente del sitio que nos recibe”, compartió el artista.

Trayectoria del artista

Originario de Guadalajara, Jalisco, Enrique Chiu radica actualmente en Tijuana y cuenta con una extensa trayectoria internacional: más de 600 exposiciones en México y el extranjero —247 individuales y 519 colectivas—, participación en 80 festivales culturales y la realización de más de 460 murales con causa. Su trabajo ha sido incluido en libros de texto y materiales académicos, lo que refuerza el impacto social y educativo de sus proyectos.

La exposición Humanidad Migrante permanecerá abierta hasta el 13 de octubre de 2025, en la planta alta del Museo de la Isla. La entrada es libre y el acceso al público está disponible de martes a domingo, en horario de 9:00 a 17:00 horas.

En palabras del propio Chiu, más que una exposición, se trata de un homenaje a quienes, a pesar de la adversidad, siguen caminando en busca de una vida digna.
“Hablar de migración es un tema global y delicado. Lo que proponemos con esta muestra es un espacio para reflexionar y, sobre todo, para promover una cultura de paz”, expresó.
