Cozumel Readies Bicycle Route for September 70.3 Ironman

A cleaning brigade of 30  has been given the task of readying the island’s bicycle paths in time for the September Metlife 70.3 Ironman.  Workers will not only clean and repair the asphalt on the bicycle route that circles the island, but also ensure that the route’s perimeters will also be free of overhanging branches and weeds which can also be a source of potential danger for triathlon competitors.  The project is being overseen by the Municipal Department of Urban Services.

The Metlife 70.3 Ironman is scheduled to take place on September 21st, 2014.  This international event is one of the first that marks what has now become known as “triathlon season” in Cozumel.  This will be the third year that Cozumel has hosted this event.  Both previous years have been sold-out events, in fact, last year’s event was attended by more than 1,500 athletes and their families cheering them on.

A una brigada de limpieza de 30 elementos le ha sido encomendada la tarea tener listos y a tiempo los trayectos designados en la Isla para Ironman Metlife 70.3 en Septiembre 2014. Los trabajadores no sólo limpiarán y repararán el asfalto en las ruta de las bicicletas que circunda la Isla, sino que también deben asegurarse de que el perímetro a través de la ruta se encuentre libre de ramas colgantes y maleza ya que pueden ser potencialmente peligrosas para los competidores de triatlón. El proyecto es supervisado por la Dirección Municipal de Servicios Urbanos.

Join me in an Epic, Epicurian Scavenger Hunt on Isla Cozumel  by Ric Hajovsky

Join me as I seek out the most authentic, bizarre, and way-out meals along the back streets of the colonias of Isla Cozumel.

During this culinary scavenger hunt, I will munch through as many new dishes as I can, eschewing the old tried-and-true plates in favor of the truly bizarre or original wherever possible.  Ever had cow-cartilage tacos?  I now know where to go for some.  Marinated conch eye-stalks?  I found a place that they say serves the very tastiest.  McDonald’s quarter-pounder? I know that one sounds creepy, but I’d give it a shot if I had to.  Seriously, I have never faced a meal I was afraid to try and have been pleasantly surprised by many that sounded utterly bizarre, including udder.

Most visitors to the Mexican Caribbean island of Cozumel never venture off the beaten track, even less go and try out one of the more than 450 local eateries hidden deep within the colonias of San Miguel.  If my project gets funded, I will choose 35 of the most unusual or intriguing of these places to sample and review.  I will photograph my meal and the menu or blackboard at each one, interview the cook, write a blog about the experience and post them on my website, Everything Cozumel.com

Besides the hole-in-the-wall eateries offering way-out or little known delicacies, I will also target local restaurants that are reputed to serve the “best” version of some traditional Yucatecan dish: the best queso relleno, relleno negro, papadzules, cochinita pibil, etc.  I am setting a goal of trying out each of these 35 eateries within the first two months following the date my project receives its funding.  I estimate that it will be about mid to late November, 2014 when I eat my last meal (figuratively speaking, of course).

I am NOT asking you to contribute! All I’m asking is to please take a look at my Kickstarter project and post something about it on your Facebook page or some other forum if it strikes your fancy.

Vengan conmigo a una épica y epicúrea búsqueda en la Isla de Cozumel  por Ric Hajovsky

Acompáñenme a recorrer las aparatadas calles en las Colonias de la Isla de Cozumel en la búsqueda de la comida más auténtica, extraña y excéntrica.

A través de esta búsqueda culinaria probaré tantos platillos como me sea posible evitando los platillos viejos y conocidos a favor de platillos extraños u originales, siempre que sea posible. ¿Alguna vez probó los tacos de cartílago de res? Conozco el sitio donde los hay. ¿Ojos de caracol marinados? Encontré un sitio que dice servir los más sabrosos. ¿La hamburguesa McDonald’s de cuarto de libra? Sé que eso suena desagradable, pero yo lo probaría si tuviera que hacerlo. En serio, nunca me he enfrentado a alguna comida que me diera miedo probar, y con agrado he quedado sorprendido por muchos platillos que sonaban estrafalarios, incluyendo ubre.

Muchos de los que visitan la Isla de Cozumel en el caribe mexicano jamás se aventuran más allá de las zonas acostumbradas, y mucho menos  prueban alguno de los 450 pequeños restaurantes locales escondidos en lo profundo de las colonias de San Miguel. Si mi proyecto llega a contar con el financiamiento, para probar y evaluar elegiría 35 de los lugares menos comunes o intrigantes. Tomaré una fotografía de mi comida y el menú o pizarrón en cada uno, entrevistaré al cocinero, escribiré un blog acerca de la experiencia y la publicaré en mi página web Everything Cozumel.com

Además de los restaurantes pequeños y poco extravagantes que ofrecen delicias singulares o poco conocidas,  también me enfocaré en restaurantes locales que tienen fama de servir la "mejor" versión de algunos platillos yucatecos tradicionales: el mejor queso relleno, relleno negro, papadzules, cochinita pibil, etc. Estoy fijando la meta de probar cada uno de estos 35 restaurantes dentro de los primeros dos meses posteriores a la fecha que mi proyecto reciba financiamiento. Estimo que el último platillo que comeré será a mediados o fines de Noviembre 2014 (desde luego hablando en sentido figurado).

¡NO les estoy solicitando aportaciones! Todo lo que pido es que por favor vean mi proyecto de arranque (Kickstarter) y escriban algo en su página Facebook o algún otro foro si así lo prefieren.

Medal for Tourism Achievement to be awarded on September 27 Honoring Don Gaston Cantarell by Irma Portilla de Cantarell

Upon the one year anniversary of  Gaston Cantarell´s death, a very important prize will be awarded bearing his name, the medal for tourism achievement.

Gaston Cantarell, or as he was called, Don Gastòn, arrived in Cozumel 50 years ago. He opened Hotel Cantarell in 1967, being the third hotel on the island. It started with 60 rooms, which was probably big for that era. A lot of business owners on the island used to work there, such as Victor, owner of Shampoo, or Doña Ines, famous for her cakes.

Don Gaston helped the hotel owners make the hotel association, and headed it for 30 years. This was a
Voluntary post for him, however he did it passionately. During this time he brought tour operators from Canada and the United States, and made many of the arrangements for flights that we still have to
Cozumel, being his last the one from Miami.

He also made posible events such as the Ironman, which is a very important legacy. When Hotel Cantarell closed down, he organized a group of investors and continued building hotels, he was a partner of Reef Club hotel for many years. He will be deeply missed, by his fellow hoteliers, and mostly by his family.

A comitee was formed to chose this year´s award winner, which includes his two sons, Gerardo
and Juan Carlos,  and will be given on september 27,  to Celebrate tourism day.

Irma Portilla de Cantarell, is the daughter in law of Don Gaston Cantarell. Way back in 2012 Irma was kind enough to share her How I came to call Cozumel homestory. She is also the owner of the AXA Insurance located on Av. 30 and 11.

Que llevará su nombre, la medalla al mérito turístico 2014.

Gastón Cantarell, o como era llamado, Don Gastón, llegó a la isla de Cozumel hace 50 años. Abrió el hotel Cantarell en 1967, siendo el tercer hotel de la isla. Comenzó con 60 habitaciones, lo cual era bastante grande para la época.  Muchos empresarios de la isla trabajaron ahí, como fue Víctor Novelo el dueño de la estética Shampoo, o Doña Inés, famosa por sus pasteles.

Junto con los otros hoteles, formó la Asociación de Hoteles, la cual dirigió durante 30 años. Esto
Fue un trabajo voluntario para él, sin embargo lo hizo apasionadamente. Durante su gestión trajo
Tour operadores de Canadá y Estados Unidos, e hizo gestiones para traer la gran mayoría de los
Vuelos con los que contamos hoy en día, siendo el último la conexión con Miami.

También hizo posibles eventos como el Ironman, que es un legado muy importante para la isla. Cuando el hotel
Cantarell cerró sus puertas, juntó un grupo de inversionistas y continuó construyendo hoteles,
Siendo socio del Reef Club durante muchos años.
Sus compañeros hoteleros lo extrañarán siempre, y su familia aún más.

Se ha formado un comité para escoger al acreedor del premio de este año, el cual incluye a dos de
Sus hijos, Gerardo y Juan Carlos, y será otorgado el 27 de septiembre, para celebrar el día del
Turismo.

Irma Portilla de Cantarell, es la nuera de Don Gastón Cantarell.  En el año 2012 Irma tuvo la amabilidad de compartir su historia  “Cómo se convirtió Cozumel en mi hogar”. Ella es propietaria de los Seguros AXA ubicado en Av. 30 y 11.

Humane Society Pets of the Week  by Janice Ramirez Castro

Nemo, 3 month old male dog. He was brought in by a family that found him on a busy street. Later we found out that a family tried to give him a little treatment by putting purple violet tincture, a common local thing for skin problems on animals but does nothing for any kind of skin problem in reality. Well they were so fearful of catching something from him they put him back on the street outside of their house. Somebody else found him and brought him to the HS. He was completely covered with crust and skin so inflamed, the pain he must have been enduring just hard to imagine. All went to work right away bathing him and giving him multiple injections to help him. This photo is one week after his rescue and we are updating his story regularly via our Facebook page. He is so much better already! His primary problem is demodexx mange. Very treatable and it is not contagious at all. His fur is already growing back. He has one more week of quarantine to go, but his kennels if full of fun things and comforting blankets. He comes up to the door and wags his tail endlessly. He has the cutest overbite ever! He should be ready for adoption in about 6 weeks! Whoever adopts this boy will be one lucky family. Admission date: July 20, 2014

Eevee, 4 week old, female cat. Part of the Pokemon Litter, she was found by a family with her siblings at the age of 3 weeks in the jungle. Probably mom cat had tuck them away while she foraged for food. They have been a lot of work to make sure they could eat on their own, but they are doing well. They are all quite colorful and enjoy climbing in their large crate and rolling about with each other. Admission date: July 8, 2014 Remember please to evaluate the kitten litter situation and not only taking them away from their mom, there's a not explaining this deeply on our facebook page.

Volunteer at the shelter, it is so important for the dogs ad cats to get more individual attention, you can walk our dogs or play with the puppies and cats Monday to Sunday 11am to 1pm and 3pm to 4:30pm, children must come with a responsible grown up. Please be part of the solution: adopt, spay/neuter your pet, donate, take care of your rescues (bring them in for a check with the vet). Pet health alert: we recently found out some dogs with TVT (Canine transmissible venereal tumor) on Colonia Centro, they use to roam freely on the street, so please, check the health of your pet with your vet.

Elizabeth is a volunteer for our Humane Society. She has agreed to shave all her hair off to help raise money for our HS! Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria por Janice Ramirez Castro

Nemo, perro de 3 meses de edad. Fue traído por una familia que lo encontró en una concurrida calle. Después supimos que una familia trató de darle algún tratamiento poniéndole tintura violeta, una costumbre local para problemas de la piel en animales pero en realidad no ayuda en nada a los problemas de la piel. Bueno, en verdad tenía tanto miedo de contraer algo a través del perrito que lo dejaron en la calle, afuera de su casa. Alguien más lo encontró y lo trajo a la Sociedad Humanitaria. Estaba completamente cubierto con una costra y su piel muy inflamada; es muy difícil imaginar el dolor que debe haber soportado. De inmediato se le dio atención bañándolo y aplicándole múltiples inyecciones para ayudarle. Esta foto es una semana después de su rescate y estamos actualizando con frecuencia esta historia en nuestra página Facebook. ¡Ya se encuentra mucho mejor! Su problema principal es la sarna demodex tratable y nada contagiosa. Su pelaje esta creciendo nuevamente. Le queda una semana más de cuarentena, y su jaula está llena de cosas divertidas y de mantas para reconfortarle. Viene hacia la puerta y menea la cola incansablemente. ¡Tiene una sobre mordida de lo más tierna! ¡Estará listo para adopción en unas 6 semanas! Quien sea que adopte a este chico será una familia muy afortunada. Fecha de admisión: Julio 20, 2014

Eevee, gatita de cuatro meses de edad. Es parte de la camada Pokemón; ella y sus hermanos, de tres semanas de edad, fueron encontrados en la selva por una familia. Posiblemente la mamá gata los escondió en lo que iba en busca de comida. Hemos tenido mucho trabajo para que coman solos, pero van bien. Todos son bastante coloridos y disfrutan escalar en su gran jaula así como revolcarse entre sí. Fecha de admisión: Julio 8, 2014

Ofrezcan ser voluntarios en el refugio. Es muy importante que los perros reciban terapia de cariño. A nuestras mascotas les encanta la atención y ustedes pasarán un día agradable.

Alerta de salud en perros: acabamos de encontrar unos perros con TVT (Tumor venéreo transmisible) en la Colonia Centro, estos perros deambulaban libremente en las calles, así que recomendamos que vayan a un chequeo con su veterinario.

2014 Turtle Season Update  by Biol. C. Ricardo Peralta M.

Hello everyone!  It’s nice to be back this year to share some information about the Cozumel Turtle program and share some trivia about our shell covered friends.  First off, let’s start with some turtle trivia:

Cozumel Turtle Trivia:  Did you know that in taxonomy turtles are classified depending on how they fold their neck? The 2 main groups are called Pleurodira (Pleuros = side) and Cryptodira (Cryptos =hidden) This is because turtle’s shells evolved depending on their environment to save them from predators.   Sea turtles belong to the Cryptodira class but  - additionally they have also developed a lighter shell -  which is perfect for swimming.

This year’s Cozumel Turtle Season:  So far we’ve marked and identified approximately 1,500 turtle nests.  This number is significantly less than the past two years.  There are a few reasons for this.  The past two years we had record number of nestings.  For example in 2013 there were over 3,300 nests, and in 2012 there were over 5, 200.  Also, we’ve had a really hot summer.  That affects the turtles as they dig their nests.  The hot sand is dryer and makes it more difficult for the turtle moms.

Cozumel is fortunate to be a breeding area to two species of turtles, the loggerhead (careta careta) and the green turtle (chelonian mydas).  Turtles in Cozumel are protected under both civil and penal codes, with the first decree of protection appearing in publication in “Diario Oficial de la Federación,” back in 1927.  During the months of May through September these turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on Cozumel’s eastern beaches.  Sea turtles generally lay between 150-200 eggs each time and can nest up to 6 times in a breeding season.  The eggs take around 60 days to incubate before the baby turtles head toward the sea.

Cozumel Turtle T-Shirts will be available when the releasing season officially begins on August 15. They will be available both at our offices in the Ecology Department as well as the turtle trailer – located on the windward side of the island.

Actualización de la Temporada de Tortuga 2014 por Biol. C. Ricardo Peralta M.

¡Hola a todos! Es bueno estar de vuelta este año para compartir información sobre el programa de la tortugas en Cozumel y compartir la trivia acerca de nuestras amigas con caparazón. Antes que nada, comencemos con un poco de trivia tortuga:

Trivia Tortuga de Cozumel: ¿Sabía usted que en taxonomía las tortugas se clasifican dependiendo de la forma en que pliegan su cuello? Los 2 grupos principales se denominan Pleurodira (Pleuros = lado) y Cryptodira (Cryptos = oculto). Esto se debe a que los caparazones de las tortugas evolucionaron en función a su entorno para salvarse de los depredadores. Las tortugas marinas pertenecen a la clase Cryptodira, y además de han desarrollado un caparazón más ligero  que es perfecto para nadar.

Temporada de la tortuga en Cozumel este año: Hasta ahora hemos marcado e identificado cerca de 1,500 nidos de tortugas. Esta cifra es significativamente menor a los últimos dos años. Existen algunas razones del por qué. Los últimos dos años tuvimos una cifra récord en anidamiento. Por ejemplo, en el año 2013 hubo más de 3.300 nidos y en el 2012  más de 5,200.  Además, hemos tenido un verano realmente cálido; ello afecta a las tortugas cuando tienen que cavar sus nidos. La arena caliente es más seca y hace que sea más difícil para las mamás tortugas.
Cozumel tiene la fortuna de ser un área de anidación de dos especies de tortugas: la tortuga caguama (careta careta) y la tortuga verde (Chelonia quelonio). Las tortugas en Cozumel están protegidas tanto por el Código Civil como por el Penal, con el primer decreto de protección apareciendo en la publicación del Diario Oficial de la Federación desde el año 1927. Entre Mayo y Septiembre es la arribazón de estas tortugas las cuales vienen a colocar sus huevos en playas orientales de Cozumel. En general, las tortugas marinas ponen entre 150 a 200 huevos por vez, y pueden anidar hasta 6 veces en una temporada de cría. Los huevos tardan alrededor de 60 días para incubar antes de que las crías se dirijan al mar.

Las camisetas de las Tortugas de Cozumel estarán disponibles cuando la temporada de liberación comience oficialmente en Agosto 15. Las encontrarán en nuestras oficinas en el Dirección de Ecología, así como en el remolque de la tortuga, ubicado en el lado barlovento de la Isla.

El remolque del programa de la tortuga en Cozumel, situado en el lado oriental de la Isla es patrocinado por la Dirección Municipal de Ecología. Sus oficinas se ubican en el Parque Cenote, en la Ave. 65 justo al sur del salón de eventos “Moby Dick”. El personal estará en la oficina de 10 a.m. a 12 p.m. los miércoles.
