A Great Start to 2011: High Hotel Occupancy Rates
It’s long been a Cozumel tradition to watch the first sunrise of the New Year on the beaches of the eastern side of the island. January 1st 2011 was kind enough to bring sunny skies and warm temperatures so island visitors and residents could appreciate all the natural beauty our island offers, as well as great the New Year. In fact, 2011 has already started out on a high note for Cozumel. According to the Asociación de Hoteles de Cozumel, island hotels are operating at over 80% occupancy. Island residents are hoping these numbers remain high, as 48 flights are scheduled to arrive this week alone, and the weather continues to be warm and mild.
Un gran inicio en el 2011: Mayor porcentaje de ocupación hotelera
Una larga tradición en Cozumel es observar el primer amanecer del Año Nuevo en las playas de la costa oriental. El 1º de enero del 2011 fue muy gentil al traer un cielo soleado y temperaturas cálidas para que los visitantes y residentes de la Isla pudieran tener la oportunidad de admirar las bellezas naturales que ofrece nuestra Isla, al igual que un gran Año Nuevo. De hecho el año 2011 inicio de una manera optimista para Cozumel. De acuerdo a la Asociación de Hoteles de Cozumel, los hoteles de la Isla se encuentran operando con una ocupación de 80%. Los residentes de la Isla esperan que estas cifras se mantengan elevadas, en virtud de sólo en esta semana existe se tiene programada la llegada de 48 vuelos a la Isla y el clima continua cálido y templado.
   
Ferry Prices Rise Unexpectedly
On the first Monday of the New Year, many island residents were surprised by a 14% price increase in ferry ticket prices by Mexico Waterjets According to reports, no announcements as to the increase were made ahead of time, and it was only through a sign at the ticket widow that passengers were informed that ferry crossings were now $160 pesos. So far there has been no word as to whether the second ferry company, Ultramar, will raise their rates in turn. In spite of both companies offering a “plan local,” or discount for island residents, for large families or people of limited means, crossings to the mainland can be prohibitively expensive. In fact, ticket sales in 2010 were lower than ticket sales for 2009, which many attribute to higher process.

El primer día lunes del Año Nuevo muchos residentes de la Isla se vieron sorprendidos por el incremento de 14% al precio de los boletos de los barcos Mexico Waterjets. De acuerdo a los reportes, no se dio ningún aviso previo acerca del aumento, y los pasajeros fueron informados únicamente a través un anuncio colocado en las ventanillas de venta de boletos que mencionaban que la nueva tarifa era de $160 pesos. Hasta el momento se desconoce si la otra empresa, Ultramar, también incrementará sus precios. A pesar de que ambas compañías ofrecen un “plan local”, o descuento a la población local, la tarifa del cruce hacia la plataforma continental para grandes familias o personas con recursos limitados, es prohibitivo. De hecho, las ventas de boletos durante el año 2010 fueron menores a comparación del año 2009, situación que muchos atribuyen al incremento de tarifas.
 
Cozumel Masters 2011 Swim Meet Announced
The Cozumel Municipal Swimming Pool will be hosting the second annual “Masters Cozumel 2011” swim meet on Saturday January 22nd. All of the swim teams from the southeastern area of the state of Quintana Roo have been invited to participate. The swim meet will be divided into two age categories, 19 – 24 and 25 – up. Swim teams who wish to participate need to register by January 21st, and need to consist of five members and a substitute. The first three winners in each category receive a cash prize, and all participants will receive t-shirts and commemorative plaques. Se anuncia el Encuentro Deportivo de Natación “Cozumel Masters 2011”
Las Piscina Municipal de Cozumel será anfitriona del Segundo Encuentro Deportivo Anual de Natación “Masters Cozumel 2011” el día sábado 22 de enero. Se invita a todos los equipos de la zona sureste del Estado de Quintana Roo a participar. El Encuentro se dividirá en dos categorías por edades: 19 a 24 y 25 a edades mayores. Es necesario que los equipos que deseen participar se inscriban al 21 de enero, y deben constar de cinco miembros y un sustituto. Los tres primeros ganadores dentro de cada categoría recibirán un premio en efectivo, y todos los participantes recibirán camisetas y placas conmemorativas. El evento también se encuentra abierto para equipos provenientes de otras zonas; para mayor información, pueden ponerse en contacto con la Directora de la Piscina Municipal, Elena Rose Zapata at coz_marlins@hotmail.com
  
Humane Society Pets of the Week - by Monica Velazco
Maggie, Sombra and Zeke Two sisters and a brother, about 6 weeks old, were left in a plastic crate just outside the shelter. Nobody saw whoever dropped them, even though it happened during working hours. The staff tried to feed theses babies but they were too scared. So they went to a foster home, where they were left in a quite place, and food and water was made available to them. And boy were they hungry! It is hard to figure what could have happened to these little ones so early in life, but just gently picking them up made them stiff with panic.
After a week in foster care they were a bit more relaxed. Who made a big difference to them was... another puppy! One that was 3 months old and who had been a foster puppy himself. As soon as the little ones saw Sifu, the older puppy whom we featured here before, they wagged their little tails and their attitude changed. Sifu started herding them out from behind the toilet -their safe base-, and the beggining of great progress started right there. The next day they were taken to their second foster home, where Roxie the dog is a professional surrogate mother. She saw them and wanted to get inside the kennel with them!
They have now been with their foster family for a month, and they have made huge progress. Sombra and Zeke are the energetic ones, and Maggie is definitely a lap dog. What they needed was patience, love, and other dogs.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria - Monica Velazco
Maggie, Sombra y Zeke Tres cachorritos de 6 semanas de edad fueron abandonados en una java de plástico afuera del refugio. Quien sea que los haya dejado ni siquiera fue visto por nosotros. El staff trató de dar de comer a los bebés pero tenían demasiado miedo, así que era trabajo para alguien que se dedicara a ellos. Se fueron a casa puente, donde se les puso en un área tranquila y se les dejó alimento disponible. Comieron, ¡y con mucha hambre! Es dificil imaginar qué puede haberles pasado a tan corta edad, pero el solo levantarlos cuidadosamente hacía que se pusieran tiesos con pánico.
Después de una semana los tres, un machito y dos hembras, estaban más relajados y comiendo bien. Pero alguien hizo una gran diferencia: ¡otro cachorro! Fue Sifu, un cachorrito de tres meses de edad, que ya era todo un experto en jugar y disfrutar la vida. Apenas los pequeños vieron a Sifu, su actitud cambió y se atrevieron a mover sus colitas. Sifu los empezó a forzar hacia afuera de su base de seguridad (que era detrás del escusado) y ahí comenzó un gran cambio. Al día siguiente los tres cachorros se fueron a su segunda casa puente, donde Roxie la mamá perra (que nunca ha sido mamá) los recibió felíz. ¡Al verlos quiso inmediatamente menterse a la transportadora con ellos!
Ya han estado 1 mes con su familia temporal y la diferencia es increíble. Son cachorros sanos y sin miedo. Sombra y Zeke son latosos y juguetones, y Maggie definitivamente es una perrita tranquila a la que le gusta estar en las piernas de alguien. Todo lo que necesitaban estos chiquitos era paciencia, cariño, y otros perros.

DIF To Improve Transportation for Special Needs Islanders
The Desarrollo Integral de la Familia Cozumel (DIF), has announced they have been able to secure funding for a transport van for those with special needs here on the island. The vehicle will also have space for personnel trained to assist passengers and their families. DIF oversees a wide variety of public health care programs including free healthcare screenings, such as dental checkups an glaucoma tests, as well as the distribution of educational materials on topics such as breast cancer and childhood obesity. DIF is directed by Virginia Alcerreca de González, who is also the wife of our current Mayor, Juan Carlos Gonzalez. For more information on the programs offered, check out their webpage.
DIF mejorará el transporte para habitantes de la Isla con necesidades especiales
El Desarrollo Integral de la Familia Cozumel (DIF) ha anunciado que cuentan con los fondos para la adquisición de una camioneta que transportará a las personas con necesidades especiales en la Isla. EL vehículo también contará con espacio para personal capacitado que ayudara a los pasajeros y a sus familias. El DIF supervisa una amplia gama de programas de salud pública que incluyen la evaluación de atención médica gratuita tal como exámenes dentales, exámenes de glaucoma así como la distribución de material educativo acerca de temas como lo son el cáncer de mama y la obesidad infantil. El DIF se encuentra dirigido por Virginia Alcerreca de González, esposa del actual Alcalde de Cozumel, Juan Carlos González. Chiropractor Dr.Scott Kircher is Back on the Island
Dr.Scott Kircher is back on the island after a hiatus of several months, and is now taking appointments at his new office number of 120-0452. Scott studied at the National College of Chiropractic, but since then has expanded his practice to include a holistic side as well. Originally from Wisconsin, Scott has made Cozumel his home for over 10 years now. While his office number has changed, his clinic is still in the same central downtown location, Avenida 5 between Calles 3 and 5.

Tras una larga ausencia de varios meses, el Dr. Scott Kircher se encuentra de regreso en la Isla, y si desea hacer una cita, puede llamar a su nuevo número telefónico: 120-0452. Scott estudio en el National College of Chiropractic, sin embargo desde entonces ha aumentado el ejercicio de su profesión incluyendo también el aspecto a holístico. Trashy Group Event- Kathy Watts, founder of the Trashy Little Group has announced her first trashy event in 2011, a beach clean up and brunch and much, this Sunay, January 9th,starting at 9 am. Plans are to meet on the other side - location to be announced, or just look for all the parked cars. If you have your own spot you'd like to groom, feel free to stop anywhere you want! Kathy will be leaving her house at 9am for the east side of the island. A killer Brunch will be served afterward back at her place.
