The "Octopus" Returns
If you happened to be scuba diving on Cozumel’s reefs in early January you might have seen something underwater very odd: the world’s richest man, Bill Gates, tooling around underwater in a mini-submarine. Bill Gates, an avid scuba diver, paid another visit to Cozumel aboard the super-yacht “Octopus,” owned by business partner, Paul Allen.
The “Octopus,” which is 413 ft. employs a crew of 60, features two heliports and a 12-man submersible underwater sea rover. With the cooperation of the Port Captain, and Marine Park officials, Bill Gates, was able to pilot the craft around Cozumel during his visit.
Si usted hizo buceo en los arrecifes de Cozumel a principios de Enero pudo haber visto algo submarino muy extraño: el hombre más rico del mundo, Bill Gates, abajo del agua manejando un mini-submarino. Bill Gates, un buceador ávido, realizó otra visita a Cozumel a bordo de la super-yacht "Octopus", propiedad de su socio de negocios, Paul Allen.
El "Octopus", que es 413 pies emplea una tripulación de 60, dispone de dos helipuertos y un sumergible de 12-hombre bajo el agua de mar tipo Rover. Con la cooperación del capitán de puerto y el Parque Marino, Bill Gates, fue capaz de pilotear la nave alrededor de Cozumel durante su visita.
"Zamna" Takes Aid to Haiti
After travelling the world with it’s message of Peace, the trimaran ”Zamna” is now enroute to stricken Haiti, with 20 tons of aid. Zamna’s wooden hull is filled with medical supplies, food, and clothing. The trip will take 5 days.
Después de recorrer el mundo con su mensaje de paz, el trimarán "Zamna" está haciendo ruta hacia a los afectados a Haití, con 20 toneladas de ayuda. El barco, con casco de madera, está repleto de suministros médicos, alimentos y ropa. El viaje durara 5 días.
Preparing for the Sacred Mayan Passage
In preparation for the “Sacred Mayan Passage” registrations for canoeists started on Monday. The crossings take place in May or June each year, and in 2009 they were held from May 21 – 23. Approximately thirty, 26-foot canoes, crewed by 4 – 6 participants, travel from Xcaret on the mainland, to the island of Cozumel and then back. The three day event reenacts Mayan pilgrimages undertaken by the original Yucatan inhabitants. Beginning with a trip to Xcaret, pilgrims engage in rituals to honor the goddess Ix Chel, in an overnight celebration. At the first rays of the sun, the canoes enter the water en route for Cuzamil. Upon arrival, more offerings are made to the goddess, and the canoes return to Playa del Carmen, on the mainland bringing the goddess’ omens of good fortune.
En preparación para la “Travesía Sagrada Maya" Registros para los canoistas empieza el Lunes. Las travesías serán en Mayo o Junio de cada año, y en 2009 se celebraron desde el 21 – 23 de Mayo. Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Cuco, Nene, & Puky
This week we would like to feature 3 sweet dogs currently at the Humane Society. Our two little white dogs known fondly as Cuco and Nena were rescued from the flamingos neighborhood, by a concerned citizen who saw them for days and days running around together looking very lost. The citizen brought them to the Humane Society. Sadly upon heart worm testing they are positive. Many people inquire regarding their adoption, but cannot afford the treatment of their heart worm. Cuco and Nena would be a minimum cost of 2500 pesos to buy their immiticide.
And then there is Puky, a beautiful little beagle mix. She was surrendered as her owner felt he had not enough time to spend with her. She has also tested positive. Puky initially sad to say goodbye to her owner, has since perked up and happy to be at the Humane Society amongst friends. Puky's treatment would be a minimum cost of 2000 pesos.
We are seeking sponsorship for these dog's heart worm treatments. The medicine known as immiticide is very expensive to buy and the Humane Society does not have the funding to individually treat each dog. The Humane Society is also always looking for donations of this life saving medicine and heart worm tests from our vet friends in North America. Another need we have this week is a pet escort for our cute little dog Yoyo. Yoyo has been adopted to a loving home in Arizona. Yoyo has been at the Humane Society for over 6 months and we are very pleased by this opportunity. If you are going Yoyo's way, please consider being a pet escort. The Humane Society takes care of everything for you on this side and will assist you at the airport. Jackie and family anxiously await his arrival in Arizona. They are also willing to drive to El Paso, Texas and San Diego, California
Esta semana cuenta con 3 perros dulces actualmente en la Sociedad Humanitaria. Nuestros dos perros blancos poco conocido con cariño como Cuco y Nena fueron rescatados desde el barrio de flamingos, por un ciudadano preocupado que vio durante días y días corriendo juntos sabiendo que estaban perdido. El ciudadano llevó a la Sociedad Humanitaria. Lamentablemente las pruebas del gusano corazón son positivas. Muchas personas consultar con respecto a sus adopciones, pero no pueden pagar el tratamiento de su gusano del corazón. Cuco y Nena sería un costo mínimo de $2500 pesos para comprar su immiticide.
Y, a continuación, esta Puky, una mezcla de bigali hermoso. Donde su propietario sintió que no tuvo suficiente tiempo para pasar con ella. Ella también ha dado positivo. Yoyo ha estado en la Sociedad Humanitaria durante más de 6 meses y estamos muy satisfechos por esta oportunidad. Si va en camino de Yoyo, por favor considere siendo una escolta de mascota. La Sociedad Humanitaria se encarga de todo y le ayudará en el aeropuerto. Jackie y su familia esperan ansiosamente su llegada en Arizona. También están dispuestos a manejar a El Paso, Texas o a San Diego, en California.
 
Carnaval Events
Carnaval season is officially underway! Last week, candidates for King and Queen were officially presented at Moby Dick Salon. This Saturday the candidates will be dancing with their official comparsas, or dance troupes. This has always been a favorite event, since it’s the first chance to get a up close look at the fantastic parade costumes. The comparsas are huge, and can have up to 60 members, all in costume, all dancing. The event takes place at Salon Moby Dick, on 65th, and starts at 10p.m. Tickets are $200mn at the door. The main event, voting for King and Queen, will take place the following Saturday, February 6th, and anyone present can vote!!
Join Camilo, candidate for King, this Thursday, January 28th at 1.5, located directly in front of Benito Juarez Park, for a pre-Carnaval celebration, starting at 10 p.m.
Carnaval la temporada oficialmente está en marcha! La semana pasada, los candidatos para el Rey y la Reina fueron oficialmente presentado en el Salón Moby Dick. Este sábado los candidatos estarán bailando con sus comparsas oficiales, o compañías de danza. Esto siempre ha sido un evento favorito, ya que es la primera oportunidad de obtener una estrecha mirada a los fantásticos disfraces del desfile. Las comparsas son enormes y puede tener hasta 60 miembros, todos en traje y todos bailando. El evento será en el Salón Moby Dick, en 65, y se inicia a las 10 p.m. Los boletos están $ 200 mn en la taquilla. Superbowl Blowout at the French Quarter
Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 7th, 6:30 p.m. New Orleans Saints vs. Indianapolis Colts.
