Results of the Cozumel Municipal Elections

Cozumel residents took to the voting booths over the weekend and elected a new Mayor and new Deputy.  Freddy Marrufo Martin is Cozumel’s Mayor-Elect, while Perla Tun Pech from the PAN party will serve as the member of the house of Representatives.  It is interesting to note that the winners are from different political parties:  Freddy is from PRI, while Perla hails from PAN.  Although the winners will not assume their duties for over 3 months, both candidates have been busily preparing for their new posts.

Of the nearly 61,000 citizens who compose Cozumel’s electorial roll,  just over 60% turned out to exercise their right to vote.

Durante el fin de semana los habitantes de Cozumel se presentaron a votar y eligieron nuevo Alcalde y Diputada. Fredy Marrufo Martin es el Alcalde electo de Cozumel, mientras que Perla Tun Pech, del partido PAN, fungirá como Diputada. Es interesante hacer notar que los ganadores pertenecen a diferentes partidos políticos: Freddy pertenece al PRI, en tanto que Perla proviene del PAN. A pesar de que los ganadores no asumirán sus funciones sino hasta dentro de 3 meses, ambos candidatos han estado muy ocupados preparándose para sus nuevos cargos.

De los casi 61,000 ciudadanos que forman el padrón electoral de Cozumel, únicamente 60% de éstos ejercieron su derecho al voto.  

Tourism Department Announces Summer Initiative & New Phone App

Just in time for the summer vacations, the Cozumel municipal tourist board has announced that Cozumel Information Kiosks in Playa del Carmen have been stocked with  20,000 maps and informative brochures about the island.  Although the kiosks have been there for some time, the additional information will create added incentive for families visiting Playa del Carmen to cross over to Cozumel.

Additionally, Pedro Hermosillo, the Director of the Tourism Board, announced plans for a new Cozumel smartphone app.  The app, which will be available in both Apple and Android systems, will feature maps, business directories, and a tour of the island.  The app is currently only available in English and should be available shortly.

La Dirección de Turismo anuncia la Iniciativa de Verano y Nueva Aplicación de Teléfono

Justo a tiempo para las vacaciones de verano, la oficina municipal de turismo anuncio que los Quiscos de Información sobre Cozumel ubicados en Playa del Carmen han sido provistos de 20,000 mapas y folletos de la Isla. Aunque los quioscos han estado ahí desde hace tiempo, la información adicional originará incentivos adicionales para que las familias que visitan Playa del Carmen crucen y visiten Cozumel.

Cozumel's Turtle Program Update

Biologist Rafael Chacon,  the Municipal Director of the Ecology,  reports over 2000 turtle nests have been identified.  Nests are spread throughout Punta Sur to Mezcalitos.  That’s a whopping 1700 MORE than this time last year!   Anyone can volunteer on Saturdays (starting at at 8am)  for beach clean-up.  It’s a great way to make sure our turtles have a clean place to nest.  All you have to do is show up at the Municipal Department of Ecology, on Av. 65.   

To volunteer for the evening nesting program advanced reservations are required!. A contribution, which goes directly to the turtle program, of $55usd for adults and $30usd for children up to 13 years of age is requested. Children under the age of 5 are free. Please contact either Cindy Trautwein, volunteer networker, 9871054708 or the Department of Ecology at 872 5795 to reserve spaces or ask about a group rate. Actualización del programa de la tortuga en Cozumel

El Biólogo Rafael Chacón, Director de Ecología, reporta que se han identificado 2000 nidos de tortugas. Los nidos se extienden desde Punta Sur hasta Mezcalitos. ¡Esta es una enorme diferencia de 1700 nidos más que el año anterior!  Todos pueden ser voluntarios los días sábado (a partir de las 8 a.m.) para la limpieza de playas. Esta es una gran forma de garantizar que nuestras tortugas tengan un lugar limpio para anudar. Todo lo que necesitan hacer es ir a la Dirección Municipal de Ecología en la 65 Avenida.

Para ser voluntario en el programa de anidación nocturno, ¡es necesario reservar con anticipación! Se solicita una aportación de $55 dólares para adultos y de $ 30 dólares para menores de hasta 13 años de edad, la cual se aplica directamente al programa de la tortuga. Los menores a 5 años de edad, no pagan. Por favor pónganse en contacto con Cindy Trautwein, enlace voluntaria del programa, al 9871054708 o a la Dirección de Ecología al 872 5795 para reservar su espacio o preguntar acerca de las tarifas para grupos. Cozumel Firefighters Lend A Hand to Lifeguards During Summer Vacations

Ten members of Cozumel’s firefighters, who are trained in water rescue, will be lending a hand to local lifeguards in order to keep the island’s beaches safe during the summer vacation. Cozumel lifeguards are currently understaffed, in fact, they only have 6 guards, 14 less than when they originally started, do in part, to budget constraints.  During busy summer vacations, it’s been estimated that as many as 3,000 people are taking advantage of Cozumel’s beaches.  Cozumel’s firefighters will return back to their original duty in August, when summer vacations are over.

Los bomberos de Cozumel apoyan a los guardavidas durante las vacaciones de verano

Diez miembros del cuerpo de bomberos de Cozumel quienes cuentan con capacitación en rescate acuático, estarán echando la mano a los guardavidas locales con el objeto de mantener seguras las playas durante las vacaciones de verano. Actualmente, el personal de guardavidas de Cozumel es insuficiente: De hecho, sólo cuentan con 6 guardavidas, esto es, 14 menos de los que comenzaron inicialmente ello debido, en parte, a dificultades con el presupuesto. Se estima que durante las activas vacaciones de verano, tanto como 3,000 personas sacan partido de las playas de Cozumel. Para el mes de agosto cuando hayan concluido las vacaciones de verano, los bomberos de Cozumel regresarán a sus actividades originales.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

CAT: This is Harry. He was brought in a year ago with his mother for TNR (Trap, neuter, release). He has grown up at the shelter, which is sad and unfair: adoption of black cats is next to nil. Anybody would be lucky to have sweet Harry!! Please consider him. Adult cats are awesome adoptions too.

DOG: Erzo, is a cute male 1 and 1/2 years old, weight 13.7 kg. He was found at the passenger ferry that leaves Cozumel to Playa Del Carmen. HSCI was contacted and staff was sent to pick him up. He had a black collar on and no ID tags. Very handsome sociable dog and definitely has an owner, but nobody has come to look for him yet. Admission date May 4th, 2103

Beware of the hot season: you should never leave your pet in your car, even with the windows open, remember they cannot sweat as we do, and a Heat Stroke can kill your pet. Please spread the word. Another important thing: please consider walking your pet in the coolest time of the day, asphalt gets hot and can burn your pet's paws.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

GATO: Este es Harry, lo trajeron con su mamá hace un año, de T.N.R. (Atrapa, Esteriliza y Libera) Ella regresó a su vecindario. Ha crecido en el refugio, lo que es triste e injusto, las adopciones de gatos negros son casi nulas. Cualquiera seria afortunado de tener un gatito como Harry, por favor considéralo. Las adopciones de gatos adultos son geniales también.

PERRO: Erzo, macho de 1 1/2 años de edad, peso: 13.7kg. Lo encontraron en el ferry de pasajeros que va de Cozumel a Playa del Carmen. Llamaron a la SHC y pudimos enviar a nuestro personal a recogerlo. Traía un collar negro sin placa de identificación. Muy guapoy sociable, definitivamente tenía un dueño, pero nadee ha venido a reclamarlo aún. Fecha de Admisión: 4 de mayo de 2013.

Tengan cuidado durante la época de calor: nunca debe dejar a su mascota en el automóvil, incluso con las ventanas abiertas, recuerde que no sudan igual que nosotros y un golpe de calor puede matar a su mascota. Corran la voz. Otra cosa importante: por favor, consideren sacar a caminar a su mascota durante los momentos más frescos en el día; el asfalto se calienta y puede quemarle las patas a su mascota.

How I Came To Call Cozumel Home, A Series by Island Residents

Cozumel is my home.
“Playa can be seen so close!”, I say while looking afar, inhaling the breeze that smells of my sea; the sea that witnessed my growth and has given me so much. That sea that can suddenly take away everything, but that also gives back abundantly. That sea that takes my breath away, but also fills me with serenity. My safe haven, my stability, my space, my home, my sea…
“One can really live well here!”, this thought comes forth in my mind while I caress the sand with my bare feet remembering that many yesterdays ago, only palm trees could be seen in the distance. Today, I see buildings and concrete, and I am filled with longing. I look for the town’s roadstead that watched me grow, and find infinite buildings inexistent in that childhood. Once again, I feel the longing of what is no longer there; of times that are no more but still hold dearly in my heart.

My ocean!!! There is nothing better than the adrenaline rush with the tank on the back while plunging backwards, holding the mask with both hands. When the current tugs you in, during that first instant not knowing if there is an above or a below, flying into a wonderfully spectacular world. My father who loved the sea, diving and adventure, brought me here for the first time when I was 7. Diving is actually what first brought me to this place. To this place that since I first set my foot upon, it has always remained in my heart.

This sea filled my heart; this place… my mind wanders along the coming and going of the waves… I remember a sunset 40 years ago. One of those enrapturing sunsets. A sunset that one never gets tired of watching. A sunset vacation in Cozumel. A sea in perfect calm, not one single cloud in the sky and the sun being swallowed bite by bite in the horizon. The only thing that caught my attention was that boat, that LAFFITTE and the silhouette of a woman that zigzagged from one end to the other. I was wide-mouthed by the perfection and elegance of its movement. Who would have thought this would become my family and that that sunset was the beginning of a great affair both with the love of my life, as well as with this place that watched us grow, watched us laugh, watched us cry, that became the accomplice of a thousand mischiefs.  

When leaving San Miguel Archangel church, on January first of 1971, I heard “I invite you to go for a scooter ride”; at the same time my grandmother pinched my arm so I would decline the invitation. Naturally, I accepted the invitation of those killer eyes. I married to the man of the scooter in that same church on August 28, 1982. I married dressed as mestiza: with the terno (three-piece embroidered dress), shawl and three-coiled necklace. That was my way of honoring and thanking my beloved town that watched me grow - this, my sea and my jungle - my roots as a Mexican woman and the noble Maya people that taught me how to passionately love this land.

We remained here and our daughters learned to call Cozumel, home - here we live moments of great joy and great sadness. This sea that watched us grow, now feeds us. Here we found strong friendships, siblings and soul family. Always grateful to my father who showed me this place for the first time. He taught me how to love it, understand it and work it.

My jungle – the one that keeps my childhood and youth secrets, as a child and as a woman – my home in the middle of the jungle and next to the sea – the one that invites me to watch the waves time and time again – the one that invites me to lay on the sand feeling the sun and watching the stars over me – the one that invites me to hear the roaring sea before the rough black, sharp rocks – each with a history and testimony of what was and what will be. That, my house in the middle of the jungle, asks of me:  WHEN DID I BECOME YOUR HOME? I breathe in deeply and cannot find the answer; this place runs in my blood and I hold it in my heart; I do not know if it was a vacation, or when I fell in love with life and love; I do not have a precise moment – I don’t know – don’t know… What I do know is that I will remain my eternity in that cove looking at the sea – next to my jungle and over rough black, sharp rocks, amidst the jungle and next to the sea I will spend my eternity.

Cómo se convirtió Cozumel en mi hogar. Una serie escrita por habitantes de la Isla

Mi hogar es Cozumel
"Qué cerca se ve Playa!" digo mientras  miro a lo lejos y respiro la brisa que huele a mi mar, a ese mar que me vio crecer y que tantas cosas me ha dado.  Ese mar que, de repente, quita todo pero que, también, da en abundancia.  Ese mar que me impone pero que también me llena de tranquilidad.  Mi puerto seguro, mi estabilidad, mi espacio, mi casa, mi mar....
“! Pero que bien se vive aquí!" Pienso mientras sobo la arena con mis pies descalzos a la vez que recuerdo que, en aquellos ayeres, solo se veían palmeras a lo lejos.  Hoy, veo edificios y concreto y me lleno de nostalgia. Busco la rada del pueblo que me vio crecer y me encuentro con una infinidad de edificios inexistentes en aquella niñez.  Vuelvo a sentir esa nostalgia de lo que ya no es; de épocas que ya no son pero que aún llevo en el corazón. 

“¡¡¡Mi mar!!!! Nada como ese "rush" de adrenalina  con el tanque en la espalda cuando te tiras hacía atrás sujetando el visor con ambas manos.  Cuando la corriente te arrastra durante ese primer instante en el que no sabes si hay arriba ni tampoco si hay abajo volando hacia un mundo maravillosamente espectacular.  Mi padre, un amante del mar, del buceo y de la aventura fue quien me trajo por primera vez cuando yo tenía 7 años. El buceo fue lo que me trajo por primera vez a este lugar.    A este lugar que desde que lo pisé por primera vez llenó mi corazón. 

Me llenó el corazón este mar, éste lugar ...  mi mente divaga con el ir y venir de las olas.... recuerdo  un atardecer de hace 40 años.  Un atardecer de esos que embelesan. Un atardecer de esos que uno nunca se cansa de ver. Un atardecer de vacaciones en Cozumel. El mar en perfecta bonanza, ni una nube en el cielo, y el sol siendo comido en el horizonte bocado a bocado.  Lo único que distrajo la mi atención fue aquella lancha, aquella LAFFITTE y la silueta de una mujer que zigzagueaba de un lado a otro. Su perfección y la  elegancia con que se movía me dejaron boquiabierta.  Quién diría que esa iba a ser mi familia y que ese atardecer era el inicio de un gran idilio tanto con el amor de mis amores, como con este lugar que nos vio crecer, que nos vio reír, que nos vio llorar, y que fue cómplice de mil y un travesuras.

Al salir de la Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel, un primero de enero de 1971, escuché un "te invito a dar la vuelta en moto" a la vez que mi abuela me pellizcaba el brazo para que yo rechazara la invitación.  Por supuesto que la acepté ante sus ojos matadores.  En esa misma iglesia, el 28 de agoste del 82 me casé con el hombre de la moto.  Me casé vestida de mestiza: con terno, rebozo y collar de tres vueltas.  Esa fue mi manera de honrar y de darle las gracias a este pueblo de mi corazón que me vio crecer -- a éste, mi mar y a mi selva -- a  mis raíces de mujer mexicana -- y a la noble gente maya que me enseñó a querer  esta tierra apasionadamente. 
Aquí nos quedamos, y nuestras hijas aprendieron a llamar a Cozumel su casa --  aquí vivimos momentos de gran alegría y de grandes tristezas. Este mar que nos vio crecer ahora nos da de comer. Aquí encontramos amistades sólidas, hermanos y familia del alma. Hemos  vivido huracanes naturales y emocionales pero también maravillosas épocas de bonanza y felicidad.  Siempre agradecida con mi padre quien  me enseñó este lugar por primera vez.  Me enseñó a amarlo, a entenderlo y a trabajarlo. 

Mi selva -- la que guarda mis secretos de infancia y de juventud, de niña y de mujer -  mi casa en medio de la selva y junto al mar -- la que me invita a ver las olas una y otra vez - la que me invita a acostarme en la arena y sentir el sol y a ver las estrellas sobre mí -- la que me invita a oír el rugir del mar ante esas piedras broncas - negras y filosas - cada una de ellas con una historia y un testimonio de lo que fue y de lo que será. Esa, mi casa en medio de la selva y junto al mar, es la que me pregunta: ¿CUANDO ME CONVERTÍ EN TU HOGAR? Respiro profundamente y no encuentro la respuesta, este lugar corre en mi sangre y lo llevo en el corazón; no sé si fue en una vacación, o cuando me enamoré de la vida y del amor; no tengo un momento preciso -- no lo sé -- no sé .... Lo que sí sé es que allí pasaré por siempre mi eternidad en esa ensenada viendo al mar -- junto a mi selva y sobre las piedras broncas -negras y filosas -  en medio de la selva y junto al mar allí pasaré mi eternidad.
