"Topes" Temporarily Removed Throughout Ironman Route

Last week the “topes,” or speed bumps that are placed within the circuit used for various athletic events including the Ironman, were removed.  These topes were removed prior to last Sunday’s cycling event, to celebrate the completion of the expansion of Cozumel’s  perimeter road.  Mexican President Felipe Calderon was one of the participants.   Along with his security detail, many island residents took to their bicycles, to check out the course, which will also be used by over 2,500 triathalon athletes on November 25th. 

Motorists are urged to use care during this period, since while the topes may be temporarily removed, the signs that accompany them may not be, which could cause confusion not only to you but the drivers in front of you.

La semana pasada los topes que se encuentran dentro del circuito utilizado para varios eventos atléticos, incluyendo el Ironman, fueron retirados. Estos topes se retiraron antes del evento de bicicleta del domingo pasado, para celebrar la finalización de la ampliación de la carretera perimetral de Cozumel. El Presidente de México, Felipe Calderón, fue uno de los participantes. Junto con su personal de seguridad, muchos habitantes de la Isla llevaron sus bicicletas para revisar el trayecto, que también será utilizado en Noviembre 25 por los 2,500 atletas del triatlón.
A los automovilistas se les insta tener cuidado durante este período ya que, a pesar de que se han retirado los topes hayan temporalmente, es posible que los señalamientos de los mismos aún prevalezcan, lo que podría causar confusión no sólo a usted, sino también a las personas que van enfrente de usted.

Giant Promotional Screen Installed on Trial Basis Downtown

When driving downtown along  the malecón, you may notice something different:  a giant “Jumbotron” style screen running promotional displays about the island. Officials from the Municipal Department of Urban Development have installed the screen is on a month - trail basis.  The screen is positioned to entice passengers disembarking from the ferry pier.  The installation has received a lot of unpopular comments from downtown merchants, who also state the “Jumbotron” doesn’t comply with municipal signage regulations which state “permanent ads must have suitable dimensions, appearance, and location to not to undermine the architectural elements of buildings,”  as well as several individuals who find it a distraction while driving through a higly populated area.

Cuando maneje a través del centro a lo largo del malecón, se dará cuenta de algo diferente: una gigantesca pantalla estilo “Jumbotron” (pantalla gigante) mostrando anuncios promocionales de la Isla. Las autoridades de la Dirección Municipal de Desarrollo Urbano instalaron la pantalla a prueba por un mes. La pantalla está colocada para atraer a los pasajeros que desembarcan en el muelle del ferry. La instalación ha recibido diversos comentarios poco favorecedores por parte de los comerciantes del centro que también comentan que la "Jumbotron" no cumple con las normas municipales de señalamientos que disponen "los anuncios permanentes deberán contar con las dimensiones, apariencia y ubicación adecuadas para no  perjudicar elementos arquitectónicos de los edificios"; de igual manera, los comentarios provienen de diversas personas que  lo ven como una distracción al conducir por una zona densamente poblada.

Cozumel Fisherman Reporting Seasonal Lobster Catch on Target

Representatives from the Cozumel Fisherman’s Cooperative, are reporting 14 tons of lobster caught this quarter, or 60% of their expected seasonal catch.  This is good news,  since fisherman were affected by several environmental factors, including  the storms related to Hurricane Ernesto,   which affected fishing for  nearly a month.  Cozumel’s lobster season, runs from July until the end of  February.  Expectations  for the season are a harvest of 25 tons of live lobster and 10 tons of lobster tails.

Pescador de Cozumel reporta la puntual llegada de la temporada de pesca de langosta

Los representantes de la Cooperativa de Pescadores de Cozumel, reportan 14 toneladas de langosta capturadas en este trimestre, o 60% de la pesca esperada en la temporada. Esta es una buena noticia ya que los pescadores se vieron afectados por varios factores ambientales, incluyendo tormentas relacionadas con el huracán Ernesto que afectó a la pesca durante casi un mes. La temporada de langostas en Cozumel se extiende desde el mes de julio hasta finales del mes de febrero. Las expectativas para la temporada es la recolección de 25 toneladas de langosta viva y 10 toneladas de colas de langosta.

"Early Bird" Discount for Cozumel Property Taxes Starts in November

Cozumel land owners who choose to pay their 2013 Predial Taxes early will receive a 25% discount.  In fact, the municipality is once again offering “early bird” discounts on a sliding scale.  Pay between December 1  - 23rd and you’ll receive 20% off,  December 24th – 31th is eligible for a 15% and even those who pay between January 1 – 28th will receive a 10% discount.  For more information, check the municipal government's official webpage.

En noviembre se inician los "descuentos a los madrugadores" en el pago del predial en Cozumel

Los propietarios de predios en Cozumel que elijan pagar sus impuestos prediales del año 2013 recibirán 25% de descuento. De hecho, el Ayuntamiento ofrece otra vez “descuentos a los madrugadores” de 10% en una escala gradual. Si paga entre el 1º y el 23 de diciembre obtendrá 20% de descuento; 15% si paga entre el 24 y 31 de diciembre, y, aún para quienes paguen entre el 1º y 28 de enero recibirán 10% de descuento. Humane Society Pets of the Week

Tiare. Female 2 years old, found near Iberostar Hotel and turned over to Animal Control, we were able to spare her life and she's now at the Humane Society of Cozumel. She's affectionate and very sweet. Small sized, border collie mix type, 5k. Admission date 0ctober 11th, 2012.

Tico. Male, 6 weeks old. super beautiful, he could entertain himself endless hours in his quarantine kennel with his toys, he plays and plays and plays! He's now at the baby cattery. He's a super love  bug. Admission date: October 20th, 2012.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Tiare. Hembra de 2 años de edad, fue encontrada cerca del hotel Iberostar y llevada a Control Animal; pudimos salvar su vida y ahora esta en la Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel. Es afectuosa y muy dulce. Es pequeña, cruza tipo border collie, de  kilos y fue admitida el 11 de 0ctubre de 2012.

Tico. Macho de 6 semanas de edad, muy lindo. El mismo se entretiene con sus juguetes por muchas horas dentro de su jaula de cuarentena, ¡juega y juega y juega! Ahora se encuentra en el criadero destinado a los gatos. Es un súper bicho del amor. Le encanta que lo apapachen, es amoroso.  Fue admitido el 20 de octubre de 2012.

Cozumel ScubaFest Planned for December 6 – 9

Club de Vinos Cozumel:  Monthly Wine Club Starts in November - Interested in learning more about wine?  Recently formed in Cozumel, “Club de Vinos” is a brand new group that will meet monthly at different locations throughout the island.   Hugo Altez, a talented sommelier from Merida, and owner of “El Argentino” Restaurant, will be selecting a wine of the month, and conduct a wine tasting with the group.  Members will receive the wine’s technical sheet, as well as a bottle to take home.  Host restaurants will have the opportunity to offer dinner specials that pair well with the wine selection. “Club de Vinos” has been in operation for many years in Merida,  and has now expanded to Cozumel.  It's a great chance to meet new people, try new wine and check out local restaurants. Club de Vinos Cozumel: el Club Mensual de Vinos comenzará a partir de noviembre
 El recién formado “Club de Vinos” en Cozumel, es un grupo nuevo que se reunirá mensualmente en diferentes puntos en la Isla. Hugo Altez, talentoso sommelier de Mérida y propietario del restaurante “El Argentino”, seleccionará el vino del mes y llevará a cabo una degustación con el grupo. Los miembros recibirán la ficha técnica del vino así como una botella para llevar a casa.
