New Parking Regulations for Cozumel’s Downtown Waterfront

Last weekend the controversial parking meters in Cozumel’s downtown waterfront were finally removed.  Now that Cozumel’s “malecon,” is meter-free, the new regulations will have free parking from 6 pm – 9 am from the Airport Boulevard all the way to the Palacio Municipal.  The Department of Public Safety and Traffic will be patrolling these areas to ensure that the new parking laws are enforced.

The parking meters, a concession operated by Olympus S.A de C.V, approved under the previous municipal administration, were the subject of many complaints, including  poorly marked parking designations and malfunctioning meters – for both island residents and visitors.

Nuevo reglamento para estacionarse en el malecón de Cozumel

El fin de semana pasado los controversiales parquímetros colocados en el malecón de Cozumel fueron finalmente retirados. Ahora que el malecón se encuentra libre de parquímetros, en nuevo reglamento permiten estacionarse libremente de 6 p.m. a 9 a.m. desde la Avenida Aeropuerto hasta el Palacio Municipal. La Dirección de Seguridad Pública y Tránsito estará estas áreas para asegurar que se de cumplimiento a las nuevas leyes para estacionamiento.

Los parquímetros, concesión operada por Olympus S. A. de C. V., contaron con la aprobación de la administración municipal anterior y fueron objeto de muchas quejas, tanto de habitantes de la Isla como de visitantes, incluyendo cajones de estacionamiento mal designados y de parquímetros que no funcionaban bien mal.

Cozumel’s “Benito Juarez” Park to be Remodeled & Renamed

“Benito Juarez” Park, which is located literally in Cozumel’s center, is slated for an entire remodel.  The 95-million peso project is designed to revive the downtown “zocalo” area and provide an excellent first impression for island visitors.  Overseen by the College of Architects and Engineers, the historical area will have a complete change of appearance as well as a new name.  Entitled “Punto Zero,” the project calls for lowering the level of the park and removing the old central kiosk.  To be replaced with new concrete seating areas, street lights, a fountain and additional garden areas.

The new park will also be handicapped accessible and offer free wi-fi. Additionally, the main access to “Punta Zero” will be between the downtown pier and Plaza Siria, which serve as a pedestrian walkway with direct sight access from Av. Rafael Melgar to the historic town clock. 

It’s expected that the remodel will take at least 7 months to complete.

Remodelación y nuevo nombre para el parque “Benito Juárez” de Cozumel

Se ha programado la remodelación total del parque “Benito Juárez” que se ubica exactamente en el centro de la ciudad de Cozumel. El proyecto que tiene un costo de 95 millones de pesos está diseñado para revivir el “zócalo” de la ciudad y dar a los visitantes de la Isla una impresión inicial incomparable. La remodelación de la zona histórica estará supervisada por el Colegio de Arquitectos e Ingenieros teniendo un cambio completo tanto de apariencia como de nuevo. Con el nombre de "Punto Zero" el proyecto contempla reducir el nivel del parque, retirando el  viejo quisco. Éstos serán sustituidos por zonas con asientos de concreto, alumbrado público, una fuente y zonas con jardines adicionales.

El parque nuevo también tendrá acceso para personas con capacidades diferentes y ofrecerá conexión Wi-Fi sin costo. Además, el acceso principal a "Punta Zero" será entre el muelle del Centro y Plaza Siria, que sirven como paso peatonal con acceso directo desde la Ave. Rafael Melgar hacia el reloj histórico de la Ciudad.

Se estima que la remodelación concluirá en 7 meses, aproximadamente.

Unusual Cozumel History: A Series For Independence Month:Sam Houston Wanted Cozumel As a Gift for the French

In order to commemorate the rich & unusual history of Cozumel, starting in this week’s Cozumel 4 You, we’ll be running a weekly feature about some important island residents, little-known facts, and downright old stories.  Many of these stories have been inspired by Ric Hajovsky from Everything Cozumel.   This is the 4th year C4Y has run a Mexico and Cozumel history series which has been very popular and educational as well; we’re looking forward to another great year.  You can find our past year’s stories here and here, including several guest series by Monica Sauza.

As the story goes, in 1842, Sam Houston, who was then President of the Republic of Texas, was attempting to get a loan of several million dollars from France.  According to historical documents from the time Houston apparently offered to seize Mexican territories by force, and then cede them to France in order to secure the loan.  The subject then came up again in 1843 with another Texas representative when the island of Cozumel was specifically mentioned.

The plot fell to the wayside when the British Consul Representative wrote a secret dispatch home containing details of the plan and it’s supposed payoff of $8,000.

Historia peculiar de Cozumel. Una serie de artículos para el Mes de la Independencia: Sam Houston quería entregar Cozumel como regalo a los franceses

 Para conmemorar la rica y particular historia de Cozumel, a partir de esta semana Cozumel 4 You presentará un artículo semanal sobre algunos habitantes importante de la Isla, hechos poco conocidos e historias verdaderamente antiguas. Muchas de estas historias han sido sugeridas por Ric Hajovsky de Everything in Cozumel. Este es el tercer año que Cozumel 4 You presenta la serie con la historia de México y de Cozumel la cual ha sido tanto popular como educativa; esperamos que este sea otro gran año. Pueden encontrar historias de años pasados aquí y aquí, incluyendo algunas varias series de Monica Sauza.

Tal como cuenta la historia, en el año 1842 Sam Houston, el entonces Presidente entonces de la República de Texas, intentaba recibir un préstamo de varios millones de dólares por parte de Francia. De acuerdo a documentos históricos de esa época, apartemente Houston ofreció incautar territorios mexicanos por la fuerza y luego cederos a Francia con el objeto de garantizar el préstamo. El tema surgió de nuevo en el año 1843 con otro representante de Texas cuando se mencionó concretamente a la Isla de Cozumel.

La trama cayó por la borda cuando el representante consular británico envió un despacho secreto a casa conteniendo detalles del plan y un supuesto soborno de $8,000.

Humane Society Pets of the Week  by Janice Ramirez Castro

Dalila, female 7 months old, weight 7 kg. She was hit by a taxi when her neglectful owner did not keep her in the yard. A neighbor rescued her and brought her to the HS. She had a fracture to her right back femur, which our vet Karina has done a surgical repair applying a pin. At the same time she also fixed her cherry eye and spayed her. She recovered nicely and soon is ready for adoption. Admission date: June 14, 2014

Morro, male, 2 months old was found by a young couple along with his sister Periquita in their back yard. They tried caring for them for 3 days, but their dog is not cat friendly, so they thought best to bring them to the Humane Society. Both are so cute and cuddly and are very bonded with one another, playing endlessly with each other and taking cuddly naps together. Admission date: August 5, 2014

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria por Janice Ramirez Castro

Dalila, hembra de 7 meses de edad. Fue atropellada por un taxi cuando su negligente dueño no la mantuvo en el patio. Un vecino la rescató y trajo a la Sociedad Humanitaria. Tenía una fractura en el fémur derecho que Karina, nuestra veterinaria, ya ha reparado con un clavo quirúrgico. Al mismo tiempo le fue curado el prolapso de la membrana nictitante y esterilizada. Se recuperó muy bien y dentro de poco estará lista para ser adoptada. Fecha de admisión: Junio 14, 2014. 

 Morro, macho de 2 meses de edad. Una pareja de jóvenes lo encontraron en el patio trasero de su casa junto con su hermana Periquita. Trataron de darles cuidados durante 3 días, pero al perro que tienen  no le gustan los gatos por lo que los trajeron a la Sociedad Humanitaria. Ambos son muy tiernos y adorables, y están muy unidos, juegan interminablemente entre ellos y  se acurrucan juntos a la hora de la siesta. Fecha de admisión: Agosto 5, 2014

Cozumel Turtle Trivia:  Did you know sea turtle meat actually can be harmful to humans? Hawksbill sea turtles are specialists in devouring anemone and coral, creatures with stingers and poison that normally no other sea animal can eat. They can even eat Man o War – a  highly toxic jellyfish -  due to the thick armor of scales that turtles have. The toxicity of what they eat is absorbed in their body fat and is safe for turtles.  However, people who eat turtles can be affected by the toxins:   it can lead to liver cancer, kidney disease and even death. Sea turtles can also carry certain bacteria like Salmonella so please, just watch, don’t touch and don’t even think about eating a turtle.

The Turtle Trailer:  The Turtle Trailer, located on the windward side of the island is now open.  Hours are currently subject to change depending on the number of appointed volunteers and turtle nests available.

Cozumel is fortunate to be a breeding area to two species of turtles, the loggerhead (careta careta) and the green turtle (chelonian mydas).  Turtles in Cozumel are protected under both civil and penal codes, with the first decree of protection appearing in publication in “Diario Oficial de la Federación,” back in 1927.  During the months of May through September these turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on Cozumel’s eastern beaches.  Sea turtles generally lay between 150-200 eggs each time and can nest up to 6 times in a breeding season.  The eggs take around 60 days to incubate before the baby turtles head toward the sea.

Trivia de la Tortuga de Cozumel:  ¿Sabían que la carne de tortuga puede, de hecho, ser dañina a la salud humana?  Las tortugas carey son especialistas para devorar anémonas y corales, criaturas con  aguijones y veneno que por lo general ningún otro animal puede comer.  Incluso pueden comer aguamala, una medusa altamente tóxica,   debido al grosor de la armadura de escamas que tienen las tortugas. La toxicidad de lo que ingieren se absorbe en la grasa de sus cuerpos y es seguro para las tortugas. Sin embargo, las personas que comen tortugas pueden verse afectadas por ls toxinas; puede llevar a cáncer de hígado, enfermedad renal e incluso la muerte. Las tortugas marinas también pueden llevar consigo ciertas bacterias, como la salmonella, por lo que por favor sólo vean, no toquen e incluso ni siquiera piensen comer tortuga. 

Remolque Tortuga:  El Remolque Tortuga ya está abierto y se encuentra en el extreme oriental de la Isla. Actualmente el horario se encuentra sujeto a cambios dependiendo del número de voluntarios y nidos de tortuga que estén disponibles

Para mayores detalles respecto a la conservación de las tortugas, por favor pónganse en contacto con la Dirección Municipal de Ecología en Ave. 65 dentro del parque del Cenote entre las 9 a.m. a 3 p.m. o llamen al número 872-5794.

Cozumel tiene la fortuna de ser un área de anidación de dos especies de tortugas: la tortuga caguama (careta careta) y la tortuga verde (chelonia mydas). Las tortugas en Cozumel están protegidas tanto por el Código Civil como por el Penal, con el primer decreto de protección apareciendo en la publicación del Diario Oficial de la Federación desde el año 1927. Entre Mayo y Septiembre es la arribazón de estas tortugas las cuales vienen a colocar sus huevos en playas orientales de Cozumel. En general, las tortugas marinas ponen entre 150 a 200 huevos por vez, y pueden anidar hasta 6 veces en una temporada de cría. Los huevos tardan alrededor de 60 días para incubar antes de que las crías se dirijan al mar.
