    70.3 Cozumel MetLife Ironman Results

Last Sunday Cozumel was the scene of the 2nd annual 70.3 MetLife Ironman.  The sold-out event, was attended by more than 1,500 athletes and their families cheering them on.  Although it began to rain mid-day, local crowds still turned out to cheer on the professionals as well as the amateurs, many of which actually hailed from the island.

In fact, two island residents, Rosy Zapata Vázquez and John Flynn, managed to secure spots in the World Ironman 70.3 which will take place in Quebec, Canada in September 2014.    The official top 5 professional athletes and their times can be found here.

Also of interest, Terenzo Bozzone, from New Zealand, took second place in the pro category, and wrote an interesting summary about the course, and what the day was like as a competitor. Local Cozumel blogger, Celia Maria Cherokee, wrote about what it’s like behind the scenes at the finish line.

Although the 2014 dates for the 70.3 Ironman have yet to be announced, Cozumel is already gearing up for the Ford Ironman Cozumel which takes place on December 1, 2013.

Cozumel Sets Lionfish Ceviche World Record

Last week Cozumel made the official Guinness World Record with the largest lionfish ceviche ever.  Cozumel restaurants, the National Marine Park, and the Cozumel fishing cooperative worked together to create the event, which took place at Punta Langosta Shopping Center, just in time for the Ironman 70.3 participants to have a taste.

Prepared with over 1,500 lionfish captured in last month’s 5th annual tournament, the record setting ceviche was created, in part, to increase awareness for lionfish consumption.  This voracious predator is not native to the island, and has virtually no natural predators.  Lionfish are a delicious, mild flavored source of excellent fillets, which can be prepared in a variety of ways.  For more information on lionfish, recipes, cooking tips, and more, check out the webpage, “Death to Lionfish.

Catholic Fiesta de San Miguel Archangel of Cozumel Observed

The catholic ceremonies of the Fiesta de San Miguel commemorate the patron saint of the island of Cozumel.  The celebration begins on September 21, and generally features colorful processions that start from the church of San Miguel and go throughout the downtown area.  On the last day, which in this case will be this Saturday, September 28,  fishermen carry an image of San Miguel Archángel to the downtown pier and board a boat. The public accompanies the fisherman to the pier and board a ferry, surrounded by fishing boats, to join the procession, in which the patron saint blesses the boats for another year, throwing flowers into the ocean as they sail along.

Mexicans Who Made History: A Series For Independence Month: Cecilio Borge Sade

Cecilio Borge Sade was born in 1913, in the then Turkish territory of Lebanon.  His childhood journey to Cozumel, which would eventually become his adopted homeland,  took him through France, Spain and Cuba.  In his early years, he worked as a travelling merchant in Campeche, attending to the needs of those working in the then booming “chiclero” industry, and also in Merida before eventually winding up in Cozumel.

Cecilio Borge was an excellent singer, and devoted to the arts, however; he was also a businessman, and opened bars, salons and theatres as a means to help express his artistic side. He was very well liked and respected in the community.   In fact, up until recently, one of Cozumel’s most iconic theatres, located on Av. Benito Juarez, carried his name.  He was also a baseball aficionado and is credited with bringing the game here to the island.  He died on November 27, 1966.

This story, and many others featured during Independence month, came to us, in part, through the writings of Professor Velio Vivas Valdes, the official “cronista,” or historian of the island, most notably, his publication entitled “Forjadores,” (Founders) which chronicles much of the early history of the island.  Additionally, he has written a book, which is also available on-line regarding Hurricane Wilma and Cozumel.  A Cozumel island resident since his birth here in 1943, Professor Vivas V. has published much of his writing and Cozumel’s history in his official webpage.
