Last Sunday, November 26th, Cozumel hosted the  9th Ironman Cozumel, which is considered to be one of  the island’s most important sporting events.  The sold-out event brought 2,500 competitors and their fans to Cozumel.

Although the weather looked ideal, with blue skies and calm seas, most competitors commented on the strong winds during the bicycle portion of the course.

The elite men’s competition was won by Sebastian Kienle (DEU) who was actually the 2014 Ironman World Champion.  Kienle also secured the fastest finishing time ever in a Ironman event with an overall time of 7:48:11.

Kudos to ThumbsUp International: Also of interest is the amazing duo from ThumbsUp International who set what what is expected to be a Guinness  World Record during the Cozumel Ironman.  Caryn Lubetsky pulled Kerry Gruson – a paraplegic journalist and activist –  through the 2.4 mile swim in a kayak….pulled her for 112 miles on the bike…and pushed her for the 26.2 run! The pair completed their journey within the official IM time limits.   They completed their swim in  in under an hour, fought high winds on the bike, and finished with an unbelievable 5:14 marathon!
