It’s a little known fact that Cozumel Firefighters are called out more often for bee infestations than they are for actual fires. In fact, in 2017, Island “Bomberos” responded to more than 300 calls for bee infestations alone.

It was recently announced that the firefighters have reached an agreement with CIMAC (Civil Association Conservation, Research and Environmental Management of Cozumel) so that bees can safely be relocated rather than destroyed.    The new procedure has already been so successful that 14 hives of bees have been moved to new homes – located inside the CIMAC property where they are housed in proper wooden boxes.
