Cozumel Artists Juan Pablo Urquiza

Meet Juan Pablo Urquiza  one of Cozumel’s Multi-Media Artists

Cozumel is lucky enough to have a thriving art community.  Greg Dietrich, owner of Galeria Azul, has been running a regular column about various island artists and how they’ve been affected – both personally and financially by the pandemic.  As Greg says – if you’re interested, this is a great time to buy art.  I’ve personally known Juan Pablo for over 20 years – in fact, I worked with him at my very first job on the island.  It’s been a real pleasure to watch Juan Pablo’s art grow as he explores different medias.  – Laura Wilkinson, Editor – Cozumel 4 You

Juan Pablo Urquiza

He was born and grew up in places known for being towns of Artists and Craftsmen, and colonial architecture, protected and preserved.

As a child his skills were mostly for creating mechanism, robots, water clocks and medieval inventions, more than new and recovered from the magic of the past.

At the age of twelve he discovered that painting and drawing were easier for him. He then found a mystical connection with the universe within, he changed his life perspective from shadows and dramas to colors.

His innate self-taught passion led him to create his first oil painting at the age of ten, with which he won a state contest.

Over the next years, his obsession for a perfect setting led him to paint less than what he would have liked, until recently…

In Guadalajara he studies Functional Design. But the natural work of art are the Island’s reefs; the clear blue and warmth of its sea and its secluded beaches together with favorable winds for sailing (windsurfing) made him stay for 25 years in Cozumel.

For the past 5 years he has spent more time in his multidisciplinary workshop experimenting with fused glass, blacksmithing, forging, logs, resin and his love for painting.

– Laura Wilkinson, Editora – Cozumel 4 You

Juan Pablo Urquiza
