Earlier this week long-term resident and Cozumel diving icon Renee “Apple” Applegate passed away.  Apple was inducted into the “Women Divers Hall of Fame” in 2003.  Her original dive shop, the Aqua Titus, published a lovely biography of her which can be found here.

Dan and Gen Hartman have spent many happy years in Cozumel, in fact, they were one of Renee Applegate’s first acquaintances here on the island. We asked them to recount some of their recollections from Apple’s early years

The Road to Cozumel

Dan Hartman remembers Apple ……………. It was the late 70’s when I first met Apple at an advanced dive course at the Bamboo Reef in Berkeley California.  It was my introduction to California diving and both Apple and I fell in love with it.  At that time Apple was an ER nurse and diving was her passion.  We both continued onto dive master and assisted at the shop with basic open water courses and working as dive masters on dive boats going out from Monterey.  Apple later went to San Diego to get her instructor training.  Once she completed the course she was offered a position at the school but instead returned to Oakland to teach diving and work as a nurse.  She loved teaching and quickly became an excellent instructor.

She was offered a job overseas to work as a nurse in Saudi Arabia.  She lived on a base and in her free time would dive.  That was a challenge according to Apple since she had to be covered to abide by the religious rules.  At the edge of the water she would drop the veil and do the dive.  Still this was not the life she wanted I believe.  We were in contact back then when people actually used the postal mail service!  She was tiring of Saudi Arabia and wanted a change of scene.  We were living in Cozumel having just arrived in May of 1985.
She had a standing invitation to come visit which she did one day.  She quickly fell in love with Cozumel and the diving.  I remember diving under the international pier to look for treasures the cruise boats folks had tossed into the waters.  This was where our “cruise boat” collection of plates, glasses and even a step ladder.  After a few months she found a small place to live on the transversal.  It was in the middle of nowhere back then and as she once said the noise you heard at night was amazing.

In 1988 Apple realized drinking was a problem for her.   She quit drinking and joined AA.  She is responsible for

getting a lot of folks into AA afterwards.   At that time her boy friend from her days in Saudi Arabia was visiting.  It was a bad time since this was when Gilbert hit the island.  After the storm passed he and Apple split up and he returned to the US.

As a side note he was responsible for the “fake news” story that was published in the Houston Chronicle about the storm.   He ended up talking to a reporter when he left and claimed the island was running out of food and he had seen locals skinning a dog to eat.  He was not happy about Apple leaving him.

Gen remembers driving Apple around to talk to a few dive shops regarding working as a dive instructor.  The Island was strictly “a man’s world” as far as the dive business went.  She took Apple to see Carlos Sierra who had Dive Cozumel at that time and a few other shops.  She remembers stopping by Tom Hartdegen,’s (Dive Paradise) also.  He was willing to give Apple her first chance here.   That was Apple’s first meeting with Tom and she then became involved with Dive Paradise.  Tom Hartdegen, gave her a job and she became more and more responsible for running the shop.  So it was not a surprise that she inherited the shop when Tom died.  Her family became Dive Paradise and its employees.

Dan and Gen Hartman have called Cozumel home since the early 80’s.  They are avid scuba divers, and have given a lot back to their island home, In fact, Gen is the official appointed caretaker for “Lola” the town Dog

Tributo a Renee “Apple” Applegate

Cómo llego Apple a Cozumel

I was an ER doc when apple was an ER nurse. She had the same dedication to patients as she had to people just learning how to dive. I have known her for over 40 years. David C.

Apple had lots of friends. For the last 28 years, I have been one of them.

I dove with Dive Paradise 3 and 4 times a year. Was just getting ready to go again, I’m bummed that I didn’t get there sooner and now I won’t see her again.

This special lady will be missed.
