Cozumel Lionfish Prices Increase Due to Decreased Supply

Prices for lionfish fillets have increased dramatically in Cozumel, and believe it or not; that has reef conservationists thrilled.  Island fisherman are reporting that it’s become increasingly difficult to encounter lionfish, in spite of increased demand. According to the President of the Sociedad Cooperativa de Producción Pesquera Cozumel, fillets of the voracious reef predator are now selling at $290 pesos per kilo, as opposed to the previous price of $190 pesos per kilo.

According to a 2012 study  by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),  which has been studying the lionfish problem worldwide, 1,593 lionfish would eat 5 million fish of different species in one year alone.

Debido a la baja del abastecimiento, aumentan los precios de pez león

En forma drástica ha aumentado el precio de los filetes de pez león en Cozumel; y, créanlo o no, esto tiene muy contentos a los ecologistas. Los pescadores de la Isla reportan que cada vez es más difícil encontrar pez león pese a la creciente demanda. De acuerdo al presidente de la Sociedad Cooperativa de Producción Pesquera Cozumel, el precio de los filetes del voraz depredador de arrecifes ahora se encuentra en $ 290 pesos por kilo, a diferencia del precio anterior de $ 190 pesos por kilo.

La Oficina Nacional de Administración Oceánica y Atmosférica (NOAA, por sus siglas en inglés) de los EUA ha estudiado el problema mundial del pez león y de acuerdo a un estudio realizado en el año 2012, en el lapso de tan solo un año, 1593 peces león consumirían 5 millones de peces de distintas especies.
