Archeologists have recently announced a new discovery underneath the 1,700 temple in Palenque.  The “Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH)” or National Institute of Anthropology & History in English, have announced the discovery of a narrow waterway system located just below the tomb of Pakal located inside the Temple of the Inscriptions.

Archeologists with the INAH sent robots in to explore the 1 meter wide canal, which is believed to be around 17 meters long and leading to an underground spring.  Current hypothesis is that the temple was intentionally constructed around 700 AD over a natural spring, especially since the channel pre-dates the construction of the pyramid.
