Plan Piloto Gold Stars Video Pays Tribute to “Heroes without Capes”:  Frontline COVID-19 Workers

My name is Emmanuel Jesus Campos Coral, and I am from Cozumel.

As a result of the pandemic, I decided to get my “Antifaces y Máscaras de la Luna” troupe students together with those of my “Plan Piloto” dance academy, whom we named “Plan Piloto Gold Stars.”

We started rehearsing on March and finished by the end of June. We practiced for 4 months. It was quite lengthy because we were guided by the pandemic “traffic light” every week and, depending on the call for responsibility and increase in COVID cases, we were always very careful during rehearsals; they rehearsed applying social distancing, masks and anti-bacterial gel.

We did not have a space or venue. We have always rehearsed in parks, schools or outdoor places. As days went by I heard students saying they have relatives and friends who are medical staff and they talked about all the work and sacrifice they have done throughout close to 2 years of the pandemic.

That is how we decided to pay tribute y choreographing two songs: SURVIVOR/ I WILL SURVIVE. Those two songs were dedicated to all of them as we see them as “Heroes without a cape.”  We also ask for their pictures so we could put them in a video thanking, not only them, but all medical personnel in the world, and, most certainly without overlooking our Latin Carnival culture such as merengue and soca, rhythms that are very common here in the southeast which is a carnival tradition.

All members made voluntary contributions to pay for the recording and editing of the video. We had the support of the owner of PRODUCCIONES FOTO MARAVILLA, MARIANO VAZQUES. Mariano and his team shot and edited the video that took over 4 hours shooting parts of Cozumel, such as the “Monument of Two Cultures” and BUCCANOS Beach Club, where we were given permission by the owner, INES FALKENBERG, to shoot. Thanks to them we were able to make this video.

Certainly, without the main talents of Cozumel we would not have been able to do it; all the students of the academy and troupe. Thanks to them for their time, energy and talent as the video was a total success.
