Biologist’s Day. Interview with Biologist Frida Jonguitude Regarding Her Viral Blackwater Video

Within the framework of Biologist’s Day in Mexico, celebrated today, we highlight the work of professionals who contribute significantly to the understanding and preservation of life on our planet. In an interview, we had the opportunity to talk with the biologist Frida Yolotzin Jonguitud, who has been the focus of attention from several national and international media for her work in documenting marine life, in particular, a little-known species of fish that It was sighted by Frida and her diving companions.
Frida is originally from Cuernavaca, Morelos. Graduated from the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos with a degree in Biology
and has been living on the Island of Cozumel for 4 years, of which she has dedicated 3 to diving and since then she has been documenting species as a parallel activity to her work as Diving instructor on the Island of Cozumel. A couple of weeks ago, the work of Frida and her colleagues went viral on social networks due to a striking video that was echoed nationally and internationally.
“Taking a video of a tripod test in its larval state, this video is very cute and gives life to a fish that is very little known in the world, so this made a lot of impression on social networks, many things were said, some are correct others not so much.”
She clarified that the species has already been discovered and described, and although she did not discover it, her contribution with photos and videos of her has caused a considerable impact on social networks:
“This is a species that has already been discovered and described many years ago, I did not discover it, but I am one of the few people who has managed to capture it in photo and video and well, what did make the most impression is the video that “I don’t think it’s one of the only videos of a larva fish that exist in the world.”
This is a job that not one person does. The dives are done in groups and they work as a team, these expeditions are known as “Blackwater diving”:
“Yes, well, this type of diving is called blackwater, they are done here in Cozumel and they are organized by Robert Stanfield, he is a professional photographer who is very admired here in Cozumel and we are a team of three, Pedro Valencia also participates, he is a “Very very good videographer and between us we do the diving and we take whoever wants to join.”
Regarding the role of biologists today, Frida highlighted the growing need for sustainability and sustainability in all areas of life:
“Well, it is necessary that there be a biologist in all companies and everywhere to give an environmental structure to any project that is responsible because now it is very necessary for any project to be ecologically responsible.”
Finally, she opened the invitation to all interested people to learn about her work, not only in capturing images, but also as a diving instructor:
“I am a diving instructor and I can also take you diving if you don’t know how to dive, teach you how to dive, certify you as a diver, I can also take you diving if you do know how to dive and if you already have a little experience, we can invite you to this type of diving What we do at night and we go to look for plankton and you need to have a little experience, but not too much, it is very easy.

Día del Biólogo. Entrevista a la Bióloga Frida Jonguitud.

En el marco del Día del Biólogo en México, celebrado hoy, destacamos la labor de los profesionales que contribuyen significativamente al entendimiento y preservación de la vida en nuestro planeta. En una entrevista, tuvimos la oportunidad de conversar con la bióloga Frida Yolotzin Jonguitud, quien ha sido fodo de la atencion de varios medios nacionales e internacionales por su trabajo en documentación de la vida marina, en particular, de una especie de pez poco conocida que fue avistada por frida y sus compañeros de inmersión.
Frida es originaria de Cuernavaca, Morelos. Egresada de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos en la carrera de Biologia y lleva 4 años viviendo en la Isla de Cozumel, de los cuales ha dedicado 3 a la practica del buceo y desde entonces realiza documentación de especies como actividad paralela a su trabajo como instructora de Buceo en la Isla de Cozumel. Un par de semanas atrás, el trabajo de frida y sus compañeros se viralizó en redes sociales debido a un llamativo video que tuvo eco a nivel nacional e internacional.
“Tomar un video de un pez trípode en su estado larvario, este video es muy lindo y le da vida a un pez que es muy poco conocido en el mundo, entonces esto causó mucha impresión en las redes sociales muchas cosas se dijeron algunas son correctas otras no tanto.”
Aclaró que la especie ya está descubierta y descrita, y aunque ella no la descubrió, su contribución con fotos y videos ha causado un impacto considerable en las redes sociales:
“esta es una especie que ya está descubierta y descrita hace muchos años, yo no la descubrí, pero sí soy una de las pocas personas que ha logrado captarla como en foto y video y bueno lo que más sí causó impresión es el video que que no es creo que es de los únicos videos de un pez larva que existen en el mundo.”
Este es un trabajo que no hace una sola persona. Las imnersiones se hacen en grupo y trabajan en equipo, estas expediciones son conocidas como “Blackwater diving”:
“Sí bueno este es tipo de buceo se llama blackwater,se hacen aquí en Cozumel y están organizados por Robert Stanfield él es un fotógrafo profesional muy muy admirado aquí en Cozumel y somos un equipo de tres, también participa Pedro Valencia, él es un videografo muy muy bueno y entre nosotros realizamos los buceos y llevamos a quien quiera unirse.”
Sobre el papel de los biólogos en la actualidad, Frida destacó la creciente necesidad de sostenibilidad y sustentabilidad en todas las áreas de la vida:
“pues es necesario que haya un biólogo en todas las empresas y en todos lados como para darle una estructura ambiental a cualquier proyecto que que haya como que sea responsable porque ahora pues es muy necesario que cualquier proyecto sea ecológicamente responsable”
Por ultimo quedó abierta la invitacón a a todas las personas interesadas a conocer su trabajo, no solo en la captura de imágenes, sino también como instructora de buceo:
“Soy instructora de buceo y también puedo llevarte a bucear si no sabes bucear, enseñarte a bucear, certificarte como buzo, también te puedo llevar a bucear si sí sabes bucear y si ya tienes un poco experiencia, te podemos invitar a este tipo de buceos que hacemos por la noche y vamos a buscar plancton y se necesita tener un poco de experiencia,pero no tanto, es muy fácil.
