Cozumel 2023 Hurricane Season Predictions & Precautions

The hurricane season in the Pacific Ocean officially begins on May 15th and in the Atlantic Ocean on June 1, which is why the National Water Commission (CONAGUA) released the forecast for this season, which according to to the numbers, it will be “active”, which means that effects of various phenomena are expected throughout the country.
The agency pointed out that for this hurricane season, the Pacific Ocean region will be more affected than in previous years, with an increase of up to 30 percent of cyclones over the average, which is normally up to 15 events of this type. On the Atlantic side, a calmer than normal year is expected. The 14-cyclone average is likely to drop as much as 10 percent.
In total, the cyclones that Mexico expects for this season are:
Pacific Ocean: from 16 to 22 Cyclones.
Atlantic Ocean: from 10 to 16 cyclones.
Although the projection indicates an increase, this does not mean that all cyclones impact Mexican territory. In fact, only five have their presence in Mexico assured during 2023

CONAGUA indicates that the months with the greatest cyclonic activity are August and September. In addition, he stressed that the El Niño phenomenon, which has been going on for about three years, can reach the category of intense, in addition to the fact that its effects will prolong the rains until December.
On the other hand, in the Municipality, the first working group was held with the members of the Municipal Civil Protection Council and the Specialized Operating Committee on Hydrometeorological Phenomena (COEFH), to initiate the actions prior to the start of the season. They also reported a drill this coming May 22 and the committee will be officially installed on June 1.

- Have a way to protect important documents in an envelope or waterproof bag.
- Basic first aid kit.
- Once the authorities determine it, know where the nearest shelters are located.
- Stay informed by official media.
The most important thing is to be aware that living in a tropical paradise also implies cultivating a culture of prevention and action in the event that a weather phenomenon such as a tropical storm or hurricane should affect us.

El 15 de mayo da inicio oficialmente a la temporada de huracanes en el Océano Pacifico y el 1 de junio en el Océano Atlántico, es por ello que la Comisión Nacional del Agua (Conagua) dio a conocer el pronóstico para esta temporada, que de acuerdo a los números, será “activa”, lo que significa que se esperan afectaciones de diversos fenómenos a lo largo del país.
La dependencia señaló que para esta temporada de huracanes, la región del océano Pacífico será más afectada que en años anteriores, con un aumento de hasta 30 por ciento de ciclones sobre el promedio, que normalmente es de hasta 15 eventos de este tipo. Del lado del Atlántico se espera un año más tranquilo de lo normal, ya que es posible que el promedio de 14 ciclones baje en hasta 10 por ciento.
En total los ciclones que espera México para esta temporada son:
Océano Pacifico: de 16 a 22 Ciclones.
Océano Atlántico: de 10 a 16 ciclones.
A pesar de que la proyección señala un aumento, esto no quiere decir que todos los ciclones impactan en territorio mexicano. De hecho, solamente cinco tienen asegurada su presencia en nuestro suelo este 2023

La Conagua señala que los meses con mayor actividad ciclónica son agosto y septiembre. Además, destacó que el fenómeno El Niño, que lleva alrededor de tres años, puede alcanzar la categoría de intenso, además de que sus efectos prolongarán las lluvias hasta diciembre.
Por otro lado en el Municipio se llevó a cabo la primera mesa de trabajo con los integrantes del Consejo municipal de Protección Civil y el Comité Operativo Especializado en Fenómenos Hidrometeorológicos (COEFH), para iniciar las acciones previas al inicio de la temporada. Así mismo informaron de un simulacro este próximo 22 de mayo y el primero de junio se instalará oficialmente el comité.
Para estar preparados, siempre es útil tener presentes algunas recomendaciones. Cozumel4you te comparte algunas de las más importantes:
- Revisar techos y no tener objetos que pudieran salir volando por el viento.
- Revisar la correcta impermeabilización de los techos.
- Revisar que tu ticaco tenga tapa
- Tener pastillas de cloro en casa
- Hacer una lista de alimentos no perecederos para tenerla a la mano en caso de que un fenómeno hidrometeorológico venga
- en camino. Esto facilitará el proceso de compra en el supermercado.
- Tener velas, generador eléctrico o incluso algún generador eléctrico solar.
- Tener una radio de baterías.
- Planificar la forma de proteger puertas de cristal y ventanas.
- Tener forma de resguardar documentos importantes en algún sobre o bolsa impermeable.
- Botiquín básico.
- Una vez que las autoridades lo determinen, saber donde se localizan los albergues más próximos.
- Mantenerse informados por medios oficiales.
Lo más importante es ser conscientes de que vivir en un paraíso tropical implica también cultivar una cultura de prevención y acción en caso de que un fenómeno climatológico como una tormenta tropical o un huracán llegasen a afectarnos.
