Two week’s ago Jan Erickson was kind enough to share the story of the Quintana Roo Institute for Women (IQM), which serves as a link to help women who have become victims of violence, illness or other family tragedy.  The IQM can provide psychological, legal and social work, so that women can better their situation, supporting them throughout the process.  You can find Jan’s full description of all the wonderful work they do here.

The IQM is currently getting ready to do a large garage sale to generate funds, some of which will go toward a woman named “Karen,” who’s story is below.  Please take advantage of this opportunity and clean out your closets and storage areas.  The IQM is happy to accept gently used clothing, small appliances, furniture and more!  Feel free to get in touch with the IQM  ( 9871064309 or at their offices which are located on  Calle 10 norte entre 45 y 50.)  Additionally  Jan Erickson can help to coordinate drop off times.

Karen Margarita was born in the beautiful State of Tabasco. She arrived to Cozumel hoping to find a healthy and peaceful life or her and for her children.  As time went by her life unexpectedly changed and she got a divorce.

Eventually she met Reyes with whom, until 2008 everything was wonderful.  That same year he was diagnosed with cancer and Karen had to change her life once again, but now with two more children, a teenager and her husband’s life.

She arrived to the IQM COZUMEL with a broad complexity of emotions, where she was given psychological assistance, legal council and, currently, she has trained in costume jewelry, weaving (she weaved a hammock that received special mention in a recent contest at the Island’s Museum) and textile paint.

She is in charge of the household as her husband in not working due to his illness. His pension’s processing was suspended, a situation already known by the Human Rights Commission that has solved this must be directed for due solution in Mexico City. She has not been able to solve this issue because they do not have the economic resources to travel.  Counsel has been sought to solve Mr. Reyes Poot Chuc’s medical attention and his pension process be resumed. He currently has medical service through Seguro Popular which helps him cope with his illness; however, needs his pension in order to get out of debts such as rents, food and clothing for his children.

Karen needs a steady job where she can have an income and assurance of medical care both for her as for her four children. One is in elementary school, another in junior high and two in high school.

Karen takes her classes daily in the Institute. She returns home to ready her children for school and cleans homes where she has been given enough trust and support so she can perform this sort of work that is a great help for her daily life.
