Local Hero Cozumel Firefighter Foils Robbery

A firefighter helped stop an alleged assault and robbery attempt involving an elderly man early Sunday morning in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood.

Javier Ortiz, who was on his way to work at Fire Station No. 2, said he noticed two men attacking the victim at approximately 7:30 a.m.

“I saw two men beating an elderly man in an attempt to take his money,” Ortiz said. “My reaction was to help him.”

According to witnesses, the suspects approached the victim while traveling on a motorcycle near 90th Avenue North and 2nd Street North, close to Benito Juárez Avenue. Ortiz said the men then turned their aggression toward him.

“The two men tried to attack me as well, but I didn’t back down,” he said.

One suspect managed to escape on the motorcycle, while Ortiz pursued and detained the other. The firefighter said he was struck in the face during the confrontation but remained focused on protecting the elderly man.

“I did take a blow to the face, but that was the least of my concerns,” Ortiz said. “My intention was to make sure they didn’t keep beating the man.”

Ortiz held the suspect until a municipal police officer arrived with handcuffs. He said the struggle continued for several minutes, explaining that the suspect was strong and tried to break free.

“I had him restrained—in what we call a ‘crocodile hold’—and he was strong, but I didn’t let go,” Ortiz said. “I kept holding him until the officer arrived with the handcuffs. Only then was I able to stand up.”

Municipal police took the suspect into custody and turned him over to the appropriate authorities. The elderly victim received medical attention for injuries sustained during the attack. Officials have not released his identity or detailed what property the suspects allegedly sought to take.

For Ortiz, the most important outcome was that the victim was not robbed.

“What made me happiest was that they didn’t manage to take anything from the man,” he said.

Authorities continue investigating the incident and are searching for the second suspect, who remains at large.

Aside from getting punched in the face Javier Ortiz’s scooter was damaged as he skidded to the ground in order to break up the robbery.  While City Officials are working on an official municipal tribute – slated for some time next week – Alex Franco, avid Rotarian, and community activist is collecting funds to repair Ortiz’s scooter.

Authorities continue investigating the incident.

Héroe local: Bombero de Cozumel frustra un robo

Un bombero ayudó a detener un presunto asalto e intento de robo contra un hombre de la tercera edad la mañana del domingo en la colonia Emiliano Zapata de Cozumel.

Javier Ortiz, quien se dirigía a trabajar a la Estación de Bomberos No. 2, dijo que observó a dos hombres atacando a la víctima alrededor de las 7:30 a.m.

“Vi a dos hombres golpeando a un adulto mayor para intentar quitarle su dinero”, relató Ortiz. “Mi reacción fue ayudarlo”.

De acuerdo con testigos, los sospechosos se acercaron a la víctima a bordo de una motocicleta, cerca de la avenida 90 Norte y la calle 2 Norte, a poca distancia de la avenida Benito Juárez. Ortiz señaló que los agresores también intentaron atacarlo.

“Los dos hombres intentaron atacarme también, pero no retrocedí”, declaró.

Uno de los sospechosos huyó en la motocicleta, mientras Ortiz persiguió y detuvo al otro. El bombero recibió un golpe en el rostro durante el enfrentamiento, pero se mantuvo concentrado en proteger al adulto mayor.

“Sí recibí un golpe en la cara, pero eso era lo que menos me preocupaba”, dijo Ortiz. “Mi intención era asegurarme de que no siguieran golpeando al señor”.

Ortiz también dañó su motoneta durante la intervención. Explicó que derrapó y cayó al suelo mientras intentaba detener el robo.

Logró someter al sospechoso hasta que llegó un policía municipal con las esposas. Ortiz dijo que el forcejeo duró varios minutos, ya que el presunto agresor intentaba liberarse.

“Lo tenía inmovilizado —en lo que nosotros llamamos una ‘llave de cocodrilo’— y era fuerte, pero no lo solté”, relató Ortiz. “Seguí sujetándolo hasta que el oficial llegó con las esposas. Solo entonces pude levantarme”.

La Policía Municipal puso al sospechoso a disposición de las autoridades correspondientes. La víctima recibió atención médica por las lesiones sufridas durante el ataque. El segundo sospechoso continúa prófugo.

Para Ortiz, lo más importante fue que no lograran robarle nada al adulto mayor.

“Lo que más me alegró fue que no lograron quitarle nada al señor”, afirmó.

Autoridades municipales preparan un homenaje oficial para Ortiz, que tentativamente se llevaría a cabo la próxima semana. Mientras tanto, Alex Franco, miembro activo del Club Rotario y promotor comunitario, está reuniendo donativos para ayudar a reparar la motoneta dañada del bombero.

Las autoridades continúan con la investigación del caso.
