The protected zone of the Punta Sur Eco Park is home to flora and fauna unique to the island, including the American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus). One crocodile expert, Dr. Pierre Charruau, associated with UNAM, is using the Columbia lagoon inside the park as the location for the field work for his zoological study, entitled “the effect of climate change on the sex determination of the American crocodile in the Mexican Caribbean.”  A 2012 UNAM study discovered that Cozumel hosts about 40% of the state’s plant and animal life, however, little is known about the American Crocodiles.  One aspect of Charruau’s study is to document the females that live in the lagoon, the number of deposited eggs, the survival rate of hatchlings, as well as the behavior the crocodiles that migrate into this area.  The data compiled during the study will also be used for conservation efforts for the crocodiles.
