Hot Weather in Cozumel

Although Cozumel hasn’t even entered into the “Canicula” of summer, the island has been experiencing unseasonably hot temperatures  already.

For those of you unfamilar with the Spanish term “Canicula”  it refers to the hottest time of year.  Roughly translated into English as the “Dog Days of Summer” it generally begins a few weeks after the summer solstice (June 21)  and is the time when the midday sun is at its highest point in the horizon, sometime around the middle of July.  Sources vary regarding the actual dates but it generally starts from from July 3 – 14 and ends around August 15 – 30, although several reports have our State of Quintana Roo lasting well into September.

Quintana Roo, the state in which Cozumel is located,  is predicted to have the hottest temperatures in the southeast portion of the country, along with the Yucatan Peninsula.  Highs of 44 – 45C (or 111F) are predicted, although Cozumel will probably not experience temperatures this extreme due to our ocean breezes.

Extreme heat can cause heat exhaustion, dehydration, and an increase in gastrointestinal illnesses. It’s especially important to remain hydrated during this time of year.

A pesar de que Cozumel no entrado en la canícula de verano, la Isla ha registrado temperaturas excesivamente calurosas.

Para quienes no están familiarizados con el término “canícula”, este se refiere a la época más calurosa del año. Por lo general comienza unas semanas después del solsticio de verano (21 de junio), y es el momento en el que el sol del mediodía está en su punto más alto en el horizonte, alrededor de mediados de julio. Las fuentes de información varían respecto a las fechas reales, pero por lo general comienza del 3 al 14 de julio, y concluye alrededor del 15 al 30 de agosto, aunque diversos informes indican que en nuestro Estado de Quintana Roo dura hasta bien entrado septiembre.

En el Estado de Quintana Roo, donde se encuentra Cozumel, se prevén las temperaturas más altas del sureste del país junto con Yucatán. Se pronostican temperaturas máximas entre 44 y 45^oC (11^oF), aunque es probable que Cozumel no tenga temperaturas tan extremas debido a nuestras brisas marinas.

El calor extremo puede provocar agotamiento por calor, deshidratación  un aumento de enfermedades gastrointestinales. Es sumamente importante mantenerse hidratado durante esta época del año.
