The Municipal Ecology Department, headed by Biologist Rafael Chacon reported this week that 370 nests have already   been identified and marked this season.    What is a little unusual this year is that of all the nests discovered only 29 of them are Green Turtle (chelonian mydas) nests;   meaning that the majority of the nests are Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta).  Biologist Chacon stated that it’s been many years since there have been so few Green turtles nesting, but that he has high hopes for later in the season.

If you’re interested in more information as to how you can help with the turtles you can find more information outlined here, or for more information on this year’s turtle season check out the only official source, the Department of Ecology’s facebook page.

Turtles in Cozumel are protected under both civil and penal codes, with the first decree of protection appearing in publication in “Diario Oficial de la Federación,” back in 1927.  During the months of May through September these turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on Cozumel’s eastern beaches.  Sea turtles generally lay between 150-200 eggs each time and can nest up to 6 times in a breeding season.  The eggs take around 60 days to incubate before the baby turtles head toward the sea.
