Endemic to Cozumel, the Blue Crabs are a protected species. Their name can be a bit of a misnomer, since they’re not always blue in color, and in fact, range from shade of blue to even red-hues. Also adding to the crab confusion, is the fact that they are considered to be land crabs, however, the females lay their eggs in sea, where they are born and then spend the beginning of their lives in the ocean.
This time of year, usually just after rain storms, there are often mass migrations of female blue crabs crossing coastal roads in order to reach the ocean. Outreach and educational programs are in place in order to encourage both island residents and visitors to drive with care so as not to further endanger the migrating Blue Crabs.
Areas on the island with the highest population of Blue Crabs include the vicinity of the Cozumel Country Club, Isla de Passion and the Palancar area, which are heavily populated by wetland and mangrove areas.
