Cozumel Island Striving for “Pueblo Magico” Status

Recently, the Cozumel City Council, through the Directorate of Tourism, began the process to obtain the designation of ““Pueblo Mágico” (Magic Town), granted by the Secretary of Tourism (SECTUR), with the aim of showing the identity of the city both in architecture, as in his landscapes; its food, traditions and customs, music and other expressions that are an opportunity for tourists to get to know the country. In an interview for Cozumel4You, Badih Sleme Flores Director of Tourism indicated that if this badge is achieved, it will help place Cozumel in a tourism network that seeks this type of experience.
“Indeed, it is raising a platform. To a train, let’s imagine it like this, that moves internationally promoting “Pueblos Mágicos” which have their own culture, customs and traditions.”
“Well, therein lies the benefit, because as a destination, we are consolidated as a sun and beach destination. But in cultural matters we are just at the beginning and it is important, because promotion costs a lot and so that we can see the results soon, these strategies, when you get on the “Pueblo Mágico”, you can see the results much faster. For this marked tendency to promote culture.”
To obtain this badge, you have to participate in a call, which was answered in regulatory time, in addition to having to endorse the project by the city council, through the council.
“There are commitments that the municipality has to assume, which the council has also assumed. In a session they discussed and analyzed the benefits. There is a lot of work to do, but it is worth it. We have covered all the requirements and have delivered our complete application, which includes, for example, a video, databases, geographic information, statistics, and natural resources. It is a lot of information, it was delivered up to the Municipal Tourism Plan, where you can see that there is a complete organization. And so now we’re on hold.”
Approximately one month is the time that must elapse for all the points to be evaluated. Later, in case of having managed to obtain the badge, it would be presented at an international event.
“What follows, if it is obtained, is that they make the appointment to you at some event and it seems to me that it would be at an international event that is going to take place in the United States. There the caravan of “Pueblos Mágicos” is assembled, and there is planning so that all those who got their appointment, there they are given the recognition of “Pueblo Mágico” and continue with this international promotion that allows this segment of Pueblos Mágicos.”
Tulum, Bacalar and Isla Mujeres have already managed to obtain the “Pueblo Mágico” badge, so if Cozumel does, it would be the fourth municipality in the state of Quintana Roo to obtain it. The designation of “Pueblo Mágico” has been granted since 2001 by the Federal Tourism Secretariat and seeks to promote and reward the conservation of traditions through an intense tourism promotion campaign, both nationally and internationally.

Recientemente el Ayuntamiento de Cozumel a través de la Dirección de Turismo, inició el proceso para obtener la designación de “Pueblo Mágico” que otorga la Secretaría de Turismo (SECTUR), con el objetivo de mostrar la identidad de la ciudad tanto en la arquitectura, como en sus paisajes; sus comidas, tradiciones y costumbres, música y demás expresiones que son una oportunidad para los turistas de conocer el país. En entrevista para Cozumel4You, Badih Sleme Flores Director de Turismo indicó que si se logra obtener este distintivo, ayudará a colocar a Cozumel en una red de turismo que busca este tipo de experiencias.
“Efectivamente es subirte una plataforma. A un tren, imaginémoslo así, que se mueve a nivel internacional promocionando los pueblos mágicos los cuales tienen su propia cultura, usos, costumbres y tradiciones.”
“Pues ahí está el beneficio, porque como destino, estamos consolidados como un destino de sol y playa. Pero en temas culturales apenas estamos en el inicio y es importante, porque cuesta mucho la promoción y para que podamos ver los resultados pronto, estas estrategias, al subirte al pueblo mágico, puedes ver los resultados mucho más rápido. Por esta marcada tendencia a la promoción de la cultura.”
Para obtener este distintivo se tiene que participar en una convocatoria, la cual se contestó en tiempo reglamentario, además de que se tiene que avalar el proyecto por parte del ayuntamiento, mediante el cabildo.
“Hay compromisos que tiene que es asumir el municipio, que también ha asumido el cabildo. En una sesión discutieron y analizaron los beneficios. Hay mucho trabajo que hacer, pero vale la pena. Hemos cubierto todos los requisitos y hemos entregado nuestra solicitud completa, donde se incluye por ejemplo un video, bases de datos, información geográfica, estadística, de recursos naturales. Es mucha información, se entregó hasta el Plan municipal de turismo, donde se puede ver que hay una organización completa. Y entonces ahora estamos en espera.”
Un mes aproximadamente es el tiempo que debe transcurrir para que todos los puntos sean evaluados. Posteriormente, en caso de haber logrado obtener el distintivo, sería presentado en algún evento de carácter internacional.
“Lo que sigue, si se obtiene, es que te hacen el nombramiento en algún evento y me parece que sería en un evento internacional que se va a llevar a cabo los Estados Unidos. Allí se monta la caravana de pueblos mágicos, y allí se está planeando para que todos los que consiguieron su nombramiento, allí se les entrega el reconocimiento de Pueblo mágico y continuar con esta promoción internacional que permite este segmento de Pueblo mágico”
Tulum, Bacalar e Isla Mujeres ya han logrado obtener el distintivo de “Pueblo Mágico”, por lo que de conseguirlo Cozumel sería el cuarto municipio del estado de Quintana Roo en obtenerlo. La designación de “Pueblo Mágico”, es otorgada desde 2001 por la Secretaría de Turismo Federal y busca fomentar y recompensar la conservación de las tradiciones a través de una intensa campaña de promoción turística, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional.
