Safety Concerns in Cozumel?  An Invitation to Send in Your Comments

 A suggestion from a long-term island resident…..

Editor’s Note:  I received this anonymous message from a long term island resident who has been quite concerned about the issue of safety here in Cozumel.   The sender took the time to speak with the security team at the Muelle Fiscal and then called the telephone number listed below.  The author spoke at length with the officer who answered the hot line today felt very encouraged. The officer  explained that the phone number can used to report an individual crime happening for immediate response from the team or, as in our case, support for the program in general.   The original information came from a business card that had the same slogan in THREE langauges: English, Spanish & Mayan:  “PROTEGER Y SERVIR A LA COMUNIDAD”  “TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE COMMUNITY”  ” IN KALANQUEESH KIN-WANQUEESH KAJAL”.

The Island of Cozumel has, for all of it’s history, been world widely recognized as a unique “Capsule of Peace”. Locals, part time residents, tourists and families from all countries, as well as international yacht owners and prominent social and political figures have always enjoyed the beautiful freedom of a completely crime free life style here.  In the last few years petty acts of robbery and small scale violence started popping up. As often happens in other places throughout the world the punishment was slight, if at all, by the local officials .  Lately, in my opinion, things have escalated.

The Federal Government, concerned about conserving our distinction as a world leader in Peace and safety for our residents and visitors, enacted a special program for a 3 month trial period.  The President of the Country sent a squad of elite, specially trained officers and vehicles equipped with the most modern equipment to Cozumel.  They have really made remarkable advances but the trial period ends in less than 2 weeks.  The President is anxious to extend the period and send even more officers and equipment however he can only do so if the public requests it.  Mexican Citizens, Foreign Residents, both permanent, and temporary, and tourists as well are all welcome to participate.

The requests can be given in Spanish, English and Mayan, the 3 languages that are commonly spoken here. The 24 hour telephone “hot line” is 088,  the downloadable app  “PFMOVIL”  and the e mail address: ceac@cns.gob.mx  are all available for this special communication.  The android app can be downloaded on Google play and is also available on the App Store.  I highly encourage you to add your voice for the positive conclusion we all hope for our Island.

IN KALANQUEESH KIN-WANQUEESH KAJAL”.
