The Sian Ka’an Biosphere – located on the mainland – has been experiencing an out of control wildfire for several days now.  It’s been estimated that 2,500 hectares of the UNESCO World Heritage Site has been compromised.

According to reports from the reserve itself, a combination of Army, Navy, Municipal, State and trained volunteers have been battling this fire using any means possible, including helicopters, planes and specialty vehicles, and currently have nearly half of the fire under control, with about 15% already extinguished.  Officials are reporting that the blaze should be out in about a week. Sian Ka’an experienced a similar fire eight years ago where nearly 3,000 hectares were damaged.
