Beach Clean Up Cozumel

Here for Carnaval? Consider donating an hour to a worthy cause…

The “Trashy Little Group,” founded by Kathy Watts back in November of 2010, is a group of individuals with a similar vision: cleaner beaches on Cozumel. Currently the Facebook page has over 700 members from around the world, and its membership grows almost daily. After a bit of down time, we are trying to bring the group and monthly gatherings back to life. Our first gathering of the new year was in early January, and attracted a small but motivated international crowd which cleaned up a badly littered section of San Martin Beach.

Our next scheduled clean up is on Monday, February 27th, smack in the middle of Carnival. It is hoped we can double (or more!) the number of volunteers of our first meet up, attracting locals and visitors who share a similar mindset and enthusiasm. Although at this moment the exact location has not been chosen, as it will be based on scouting a week or so ahead of time, the time is; 9 AM. We will meet on the east side, all necessary materials will be provided, and when we finish, we will share some cold beverages! We will also arrange rides to the best of our ability for those lacking transportation.

We encourage everyone to join our “Trashy Little Group,” and, if you can, attend our events and help keep our beaches beautiful! In the past, local businesses have donated prizes for participants to have a chance to win. If you are a local business that would like to contribute gift certificates, prizes or the like, please contact me (kent.avery@hotmail.com) and we would be happy to make your generosity known! Even small silly prizes make the events more fun! We have a history of not accepting any cash donations, and we will continue along those lines.

Recently we have been contacted by CONSERVACIÓN INVESTIGACIÓN Y MANEJO AMBIENTAL DE COZUMEL AC (CIMAC), a non profit that engages school children in conservation programs, including beach clean ups. Their ambitious schedule this spring includes beach clean ups EVERY Saturday. Typically 45 school children are bused to the east side where they inventory, collect, weigh and then bag and dispose of trash on the beaches, creating both a learning and conservation experience. Volunteers assist the students, and, after a few hours of work, all enjoy the fruits of their labor – a nice clean beach! The overall goal is to get the beaches “turtle ready.” The needs of this group are great, and they welcome both physical (join them for a day, practice your Spanish, and connect with some local kids!) as well as financial help. A link to their organization is on our “Trashy Little Group” Facebook page, which includes a schedule of where they are cleaning and what schools are involved each week. If you are in a position to do so, please consider a contribution to this worthy cause – it is even tax deductible!

All in all, Cozumel receives a tremendous amount of trash on her beaches. If we all do our part and pick up after ourselves, and perhaps fill an extra bag, or join one of the scheduled events, we can make a difference. Having found a baby sea turtle that had crawled into a plastic cup and could not crawl back out made us determined to make a contribution to bettering our environment. Whatever your motivation, please join us on Facebook and on the beaches!
