How I Came to Call Cozumel Home:   A Series by Island Residents

Erika Armas tells us of her journey….

The calling that discovered me (not the other way around)

Mexico City, April 1999, at 21 – almost 22-, a rebel without a cause, idealist, loved to party, quite lost, late in time and way to attend the university; had not yet defined what I’d dedicate my life to. I never saw myself in the university, but this was a requirement I needed to meet . . . By then I met and/or reacquainted (we had been neighbors) with the one who would bring me for the first time to Cozumel and later become my husband and father of my children.  When the opportunity came, I did not even think about it twice. I left family, work, school and, obviously, the plans (which were not mine) to attend the university. I embarked in an adventure only with love and illusions, nothing else! Without plans, against and without my mom’s blessings, and, evidently so unaware that a price had to be paid, and it was paid.  A bad beginning makes a bad ending! A year and three months later I was back with my mom! Picking up all that I had left behind, doing all I could to return to the university!

It was then that my foster mother –whom I had met during my time in Cozumel called and said she was working at a SPA, that she was doing very well, that I should take a massage course! Wow, back in Cozumel! I did not think about it twice and had it stuck in y head; again!! I started researching on the subject and there were not too many options. Most did not even have official recognition and the industry in Mexico was really new. Its boom had yet to come! Looking and searching, finally a girl sold me part of the esthetician-cosmetologist career and said: “We do not have a massage course as such, but you can take the body cosmetics module of the esthetician- cosmetologist career (consisting of 3 parts: body, face and hair); and that part includes everything related to the massages and body treatment. I can give you a partial certificate for the modules that you take. It’s an intensive course.” She sold it so well and was so convincing that I could not say NO. I had already asked in other schools and was told I could not study only that; that I was required to take the full training. I immediately began preparing for my training; mom was upset again: Why wasn`t I going to the university?  That was outrageous!!! How could I dare despise the opportunity being given to attend the university!!!

I began classes. Thank God I found a job that allowed be to work and study at the same time and my bosses were quite accessible. I fell in love right on the first day with what I was learning. I had to travel for 2 hours to get to school and did not care, as I liked it a lot. The company for which I worked closed. I lost my job; however, when that happened my mom had already accepted and realized that that was what I was made for and gave me her support with all school expenses. I finished my training. It was so fast that when I was offered to take the rest of the course I immediately said yes!!! Thus I became an esthetician and that is how my calling found me. All happened accidentally, and soon after became my passion!!!

Today, I thank God as I am able to make a living, helping others feel well and improving their lives a bit!! It’s a pleasure for me to help people. Actually, if I did not have to pay my children’s’ bills, I would do it for free!!! Thank God, my family, my friends and my clients who have placed their confidence in me.
