Things to Do in Cozumel-on your own
One of the most amazing spots in Mexico is the quaint little island of Cozumel. Not far across the shores of Cancun and Playa De Carmen, it is a hidden treasure that many tourists overlook. If you love the charm of a small Mexican town, combined with the beauty of an azure sea and Mexican Culture, you will want to make a point to visit this charming island.
Experience the highlights of San Miguel
Like so many tourists the first time I visited Cozumel was on a cruise ship, but you may be staying at a resort and want a break from the beach. Whatever the case, if you would like to have an authentic experience on your own Cozumel is the perfect spot because it is small, safe, and the people are friendly. I will share with you some tips for a wonderful day that you can easily fit into the few hours you will be on the island. You will fall in love with the picturesque little village of San Miguel where you will meet friendly locals, and stroll through the streets and visit local sites. So, let’s get started with your own private tour of the charming town of San Miguel!
Stop 1-Benito Juarez Plaza and Handicraft Market
.A visit to the Artisan Market is the first stop on your walking tour of Cozumel!
If you come to the island on a cruise ship you will be at one of 3 cruise piers. The piers are south of San Miguel and you can walk or take a taxi to the plaza which is located directly across the street from the Ferry Terminals. If you are at Puerta Maya or the International pier, you will want to take a taxi. Punta Langosta is an easy walk to town. Your visit starts at the Benito Juarez Plaza so you can soak in the charm and culture of Cozumel. You will find venders, musicians, dancers, tourists and locals alike that are out to enjoy the day. Relax a bit and take it all in. Do some people watching and get a feel for the colorful culture and tranquility of Cozumel!
Begin your stroll to explore Cozumel at the Clock Tower where you will spot a sign to direct you to the Flea or Artisan market. Enjoy wandering through the market to view some of the most authentic Mexican handicrafts. The market has a great display of pottery, blankets, and many other Mexican collectables. This is a great place to bargain and purchase treasures to take home. Once you are finished shopping head back to the clock tower to continue your tour. When you spot Woody’s on the corner, possibly the best margarita’s in town, turn right on Benito Juarez street and walk to the corner to make a short visit to the Iglesia de San Miguel.
Stop 2- Iglesia de San Miguel.
No visit to a Mexican Town is complete unless you visit one of their historic and beautiful churches!
Take a moment to Soak in the charm and enjoy this historic church that is a peaceful reminder of the deep roots of the Catholic church in Mexico, with hints of Mayan traditions combined. Step inside to view the beautiful windows, the alter, and Stations of the Cross. Visitors are welcome to attend a mass and prayer services, or just take a moment to relax and reflect. You may also want to write a prayer request on a ribbon to leave behind before you continue your tour of San Miguel. When you are ready, walk back to 5th avenue and turn right at Woody’s to continue your tour!
Stop 3-Coz Coffee Roasting Company
The Coz Coffee Roasting Company is the Perfect Spot to people watch and enjoy a great cup of Mexican Coffee!
On 5th avenue take a peek in the shops that line this walking street on both sides. Keep your eyes open for the most wonderful coffee shop in Cozumel. The shop is COZ COFFEE ROASTING CO. and it is a hot spot for local expats who live in Cozumel during the long winter months. The aromatic Mexican coffee is roasted right at the shop and brewed into some wonderful drinks. I recommend the Peanut Butter Coffee! Don’t say, “OOOH” and turn up your nose until you have tried it. It is smooth, just slightly sweet, and the blend of peanut butter and coffee that literally melts in your mouth. Have a seat outside of this charming café and people watch as you get ready for the next stretch on your walking tour
Stop 4-Lunch at La Candela
By now you are most likely hungry and ready to stop for lunch. No visit to Cozumel is complete without a visit to a local restaurant for an
Enjoy a leisurely lunch and relax on the patio at La Candela! The locals and Expats both frequent this café to enjoy great food and good company!
authentic Mexican dish and an adult beverage! There are several good local cafes to try in this area but one of my favorites is La Candela, On the corner of 5th Avenue and Calle 6 It is one of the best local restaurants in San Miguel. La Candela is known for its great food and I have enjoyed both breakfast and lunch here. I recommend the Shrimp Fajitas, but I promise you that everything on the menu is authentic and delicious. The wait staff is friendly, and the prices are reasonable. The locals eat here and actually recommended this restaurant to me. Enjoy your lunch and relax because there is more to see!
Stop 5-Los Cinco Soles
his is the best shop in Cozumel for authentic Mexican artifacts, clothing, jewelry and fun souvenirs to take home!
After Lunch, continue your walking tour down Avenue 5 and turn left on Calle 8 to the best Shop in Cozumel. Los Cinco Soles is a complete shop for everything made in Mexico. I have explored most of the shops in Cozumel, but this one is definitely at the top of my list. The quality of the Silver Jewelry, Clothing, Pottery, Art, and Collectables; is second to none. The wait staff is helpful and not pushy at all. The store is full of beautiful displays of authentic Mexican objects of art. There is no bargaining here, but the prices are reasonable when you consider the quality and authenticity of the items you purchase. You will find unique items that are not found in other shops and you will certainly find something that you want to take home as a memento of your time in Cozumel! When you come out of the shop follow the Avenue Rafael E. Melgar left one block to the museum. The museum is your last stop on today’s tour.
Stop 6-Museo de la Isla de Cozumel
No tour is complete without a stop at the local museum. Take the time visit the newly renovated Cozumel Island Museum. There are 11
The Museum is an important stop in Cozumel to get a sense of the rich history and culture of the island!
interactive displays give you the story of the island from prehistoric times to present day. You will be taken back in time as you learn how the island developed and the Mayan Culture began. There is also a replica of a Mayan Village with a variety of displays and artifacts that show the history of Cozumel. Before you leave the museum be sure to go upstairs to the Art Gallery. The gallery displays some of the most beautiful costumes worn at Carnival along with fine art and paintings done by local artists. This museum can be enjoyed in one-two hours and is well worth the small admission.
When you are ready head out the door and turn left to stroll back to the plaza and the ferry terminal. Enjoy the sea breeze and the view of the sea as you head back to your ship or hotel. I hope you enjoyed your stroll through Cozumel and experienced a taste of Mexico that makes Cozumel so special. I am sure you will go home with stories to tell your friends and family that will entice them to make Cozumel their next vacation spot! It is also possible that you may be like me and decide that next year you are going to return for a longer stay to enjoy this beautiful and friendly island. Cozumel is one of the best kept secrets in Mexico and once you experience it you will want to return year after year.

Uno de los sitios más sorprendentes en México es la pequeña y pintoresca Isla de Cozumel. No lejos de las costas de Cancún y de Playa del Carmen se encuentra este tesoro escondido que muchos turistas pasan por alto. Si le gusta el encanto de un pequeño pueblo mexicano, combinado con la belleza de un mar azul y la cultura mexicana, usted querrá esta encantadora isla como un sitio a visitar.
Viva la experiencia de los aspectos más destacados de San Miguel
Al igual que muchos turistas, la primera ocasión que visité Cozumel fue en un viaje en buque turístico, per tal vez se hospede en un hotel y desee hacer un intervalo de estar en la playa. En cualquier caso, si desea una experiencia auténtica por su cuenta, Cozumel es el lugar perfecto pues es pequeña, segura y la gente es amable. Compartiré con ustedes algunos consejos para pasar un día maravilloso que fácilmente puede realizar durante las pocas horas que permanezca en la Isla. Se enamorará del pintoresco pueblo de San Miguel, donde conocerá a los amigables lugareños y paseará por sus calles visitando los sitios locales. Así que, ¡comencemos con su propia excursión privada del encantador pueblo de San Miguel!
Primera parada: La plaza Benito Juárez y el Mercado de Artesanías
¡La visita al Mercado de Artesanías es la primera parada en su paseo a pie de Cozumel!
Si usted viene a Cozumel a bordo de un buque turístico, llegará a uno de los 3 muelles para buques. Los muelles se encuentran al sur de San Miguel y pueden caminar o tomar un taxi hasta la plaza que se sitúa justo frente a la terminal de los ferris. Si está en Puerta Maya o en el muelle internacional es conveniente tomar un taxi. Punta Langosta se encuentra cerca de la ciudad. Su visita comienza en la Plaza Benito Juárez de manera que puede empaparse con el encanto y la cultura de Cozumel. Encontrará tanto a vendedores, músicos, bailarines, turistas, así como gente local quienes sales a disfrutar del día. Relájese un poco y asimile todo. ¡Observe a la gente y sienta la cultura y tranquilidad de Cozumel!
Comience su paseo para explorar Cozumel desde la Torre del Reloj donde encontrará un letrero que lo dirigirá al mercado de Pulgas o Mercado de Artesanías. Disfrute el paseo por el mercado viendo algunas de las más auténticas artesanías mexicanas. El mercado tiene una amplia exhibición de artículos de cerámica, zarapes y muchos objetos mexicanos de colección. Este es un gran sitio para regatear y comprar tesoros para llevar a casa. Una vez que termine de comprar, regrese a la torre del reloj para continuar su paseo. Cuando en la esquina vea Woody’s, muy posiblemente las mejores margaritas de la ciudad, de vuelta a la derecha en la calle Benito Juárez y camine hacia la esquina para visitar brevemente la iglesia de San Miguel.
Segunda parada: Iglesia de San Miguel
¡Ninguna visita a un pueblo mexicano estará completa sino hasta que visite sus históricas y bellas iglesias!
Tómese unos momentos para llenarse del encanto y disfrutar esta iglesia histórica que es un pacífico recordatorio de las profundas raíces del catolicismo en México, con toques de tradiciones mayas combinados. Entre para ver as hermosas ventanas, el altar y las estaciones del Vía Crucis. Los visitantes son bienvenidos a misa y a los servicios de oración, o tan solo tómese unos momentos para relajarse y reflexionar. Es posible que también quiera escribir una oración de petición en un lazo, dejándola ahí para continuar su visita a San Miguel. Cuando esté listo, regrese a la 5ª avenida y gire a la derecha en Woody’s para continuar su excursión.
Tercera parada: Coz Coffee Roasting Company
¡Coz Coffee Roasting Company es el sitio perfecto para ver a la gente y disfrutar una buena taza de café mexicano!
Sobre la 5ª avenida. Eche un vistazo a las tiendas que se encuentran en ambos lados de esta calle. Mantenga los ojos abiertos para ver la cafetería más maravillosa de Cozumel. COZ COFFEE ROASTING CO. es el punto principal de reunión de los expatriados que residen en Cozumel durante los largos meses de invierno. El aromático café mexicano es tostado justo en la tienda y preparan unas maravillosas bebidas. Recomiendo el café con mantequilla de cacahuate. No diga “OOOH” y suba la nariz sino hasta que lo haya probado. Es suave, con un ligero toque dulce y la mezcla con la mantequilla de cacahuate y el café literalmente se derrite en la boca. Tome asiento en la parte exterior en lo que se alista para continuar con el siguiente tramo de su recorrido a pie.
Cuarta parada: La Candela
! ¡Disfrute de una comida tranquila y relájese en el patio de La Candela! ¡Tanto los lugareños como los expatriados frecuentan este café para disfrutar de una gran comida y buena compañía!
A estas alturas de segura ya tiene hambre y está listo para almorzar. Ninguna visita a Cozumel está completa sino hasta que isita un restaurante local para comer un auténtico platillo mexicano y una bebida para adultos. Hay diversos cafés locales buenos, pero uno de mis favoritos es La Candela. En la esquina de la 5ª avenida y Calle 6. Es uno de los mejores restaurantes en San Miguel. La Candela es un restaurante conocido por su gran comida y ahí he disfrutado tanto el desayuno como el almuerzo. Recomiendo las fajitas de camarón, y les prometo que todo lo que aparece en el menú es auténtico y delicioso. El personal es amigable y los precios son razonables. Los lugareños comen ahí y de hecho me recomendaron este restaurante. Disfrute su comida y relájese pues aún hay más que ver.
Quinta parada: Los Cinco Soles
¡Esta es la mejor tienda en Cozumel para comprar auténticos objetos, ropa, joyería y divertidos recuerdos mexicanos para llevar a casa !
Después del almuerzo, continúe su recorrido a pie por la 5ª avenida y de vuelta a la izquierda sobre la Calle 8 hacia la mejor tienda de Cozumel. Los Cinco Soles es una tienda completa para todo lo hecho en México. He explorado la mayoría de las tiendas de Cozumel, pero esta es definitivamente la primera en mi lista. La calidad de la joyería de plata, de la ropa, la cerámica, el arte y objetos de colección es insuperable. El personal es servicial y nada agresivo. La tienda está llena de bellos exhibidores con auténticos objetos de arte mexicano. Aquí no se regatea, pero los precios son razonables si se considera la calidad y la autenticidad de los artículos que se adquieren. Encontrará artículos únicos que no se encuentran en otras tiendas y con seguridad encontrará algo para llevar a casa como recuerdo de su tiempo en Cozumel. Cuando salga de la tienda siga la Avenida Rafael E. Melgar, a una cuadra se encuentra el Museo. El Museo es su última parada en el recorrido de hoy.
Sexta parada: Museo de la Isla de Cozumel

Para sentir la rica historia y la cultura de la Isla, ¡el Museo es una parada importante en Cozumel!
Isla de Cozumel. Cuentan con 11 exhibiciones interactivas con la historia de la Isla desde la prehistoria hasta la actualidad. Le llevarán hacia atrás en el tiempo mientras aprende cómo se desarrollo la Isla y cómo comenzó la cultura maya. También cuentan con la replica de un pueblo maya, con una variedad de exhibiciones y objetos que muestran la historia de Cozumel. Antes de salir del Museo, visite la Galería de Arte en el segundo piso. La galería muestra algunos de los bellos disfraces que se usan en el Carnaval, además de artes plásticas y pinturas realizadas por artistas locales. Este Museo puede disfrutarse en una a dos horas, y bien vale su precio de entrada.
Cuando esté listo salga y vire hacia la izquierda para regresar a la plaza y a la terminal del ferry. Disfrute de la brisa y de la vista del mar mientras regresa a su buque o a su hotel. Espero que haya disfrutado su recorrido a pie por Cozumel y probado el sabor de México que hace que Cozumel sea tan especial. Estoy segura de que volverán a casa con historias para contar a sus amigos animándolos a hacer de Cozumel su siguiente destino para vacacionar. Quizá sean como yo y decidan regresar dentro de un año para extender su estancia en esta Isla hermosa y amigable. Cozumel es uno de los secretos mejor guardados de México y una vez que viven la experiencia, desearán volver año tras año.

Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años. Laura escapó al Caribe hace años, desplazándose de una isla a otra dando clases de BUCEO.
