Divers Rescued After Being Missing at Sea

Fishermen Recovered After Search ….

For Cozumel Island residents the sound of a helicopter flying over repeatedly generally means two things:  either the President of Mexico is paying the island a short visit or someone has become lost or unaccountable for at sea.  In this case, it was the later and fortunately this story has a very happy ending.

Last Friday two Cozumel fishermen from the “Isis II,” an open whaling boat registered with the island’s harbormaster, were reported missing when they did not return from their journey near the northern end of the island, by Punta Molas.

It was reported that while the fishermen – who were on scuba –  were in the water, the captain of the boat lost sight of their bubbles, and was unable to track his companions.  The Naval Search and Rescue Station was called into action and deployed both fast boats, as well as a Naval helicopter, which executed search patterns based on possible current and wind projections.

Around 4 pm – on the same day – the Harbormaster reported that both divers had been found alive swimming near the beach where they were lost.  Rescued and transferred to a medical facility they were both reported in good condition.

Kudos to both the Harbormaster and the Naval forces who deployed so quickly and were able to avert tragedy.
