Billfish Release Tournament 2024 in Cozumel. 2nd Edition.

Cozumel, Quintana Roo, March 18, 2024 – The island of Cozumel is preparing to host the 2nd edition of the Billfish Release Tournament, an event that has become a benchmark for sport fishing in Mexico and even for international participants. The tournament will take place from May 10 to 12, 2024, and seeks to surpass the success of the previous edition, which had the participation of 105 boats.
Formerly called the “Mexican Boat Rodeo Tournament”, the International Billfish Release Tournament has a new president of the organizing committee, Captain Jefferson Marín Flores, who has put together a team to give this competition a new boost.
This year, the tournament organizing committee has implemented some changes to improve the participant experience and the sustainability of the event.
We will seek to place chips or tracking devices on some specimens to learn about their new routes, said Brenda Ortega, spokeswoman for the organizing committee.
In this regard, she added that having fished in the seas of Central and South America, “we have learned about techniques that other people use to know where to look for the fish. How do these fishermen know that there is a fish there at that time of year? Because they have used devices and studied the fish runs.”
In previous years, it was common to see fishermen arrive at the San Miguel dock in the previous “Mexican Boat Rodeo” with specimens of significant size, but this has been decreasing.
She said that “in this tournament we want to give it a vision and a somewhat scientific direction. We will have collaborations and assistance from people who will study the environmental impact of fishing.”
Among the most important changes are:
Departure time: The departure time of the boats has been advanced from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. to take advantage of the best fishing conditions. The schedule was modified largely at the request of the participants themselves, who with their extensive experience at sea, know that better specimens are obtained at earlier hours of the day.
Regulations: The tournament regulations have been modified, including the scoring by species, the size of the fish and other aspects.
Technical assistance: Technical assistance will be offered to participants during the tournament to guarantee the correct measurement and release of the fish.
Promotion: The promotion of the event has been intensified through interviews with captains and historical fishermen of Cozumel, as well as on social networks.
The Billfish Release Tournament has the following objectives:
- Evolve the tournament: Implement changes to improve the participant experience and the sustainability of the event.
- Enhance the event: Attract more participants, both national and international.
- Encourage women’s participation: A special recognition will be offered to participating women.
- Hold a sustainable tournament: It will continue to be certified by the IFA (International Game Fish Association).
- Unite the community: Create an event that benefits the Cozumel community.
The tournament will take place in the waters of the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Cozumel. The target species of the tournament are blue marlin, swordfish and sailfish. Participants will be able to use different fishing techniques, such as trolling and fly fishing.
Prizes will be awarded to the teams that catch the largest fish of each species. Recognitions will also be given to the teams that release the most fish and to the participating women.
The Billfish Release Tournament is not only an event for fishing enthusiasts, but also for the whole family. During the tournament, different activities will be organized for the general public, such as fishing demonstrations, workshops for children and gastronomic events.
The 2nd Billfish Release Tournament is shaping up to be an unforgettable event that will bring together the best fishermen in the world in a unique setting like Cozumel. It is expected that this year the tournament will be a resounding success and that it will contribute to the promotion of the island as a first-class tourist destination.

Cozumel, Quintana Roo, 18 de marzo de 2024 – La isla de Cozumel se prepara para recibir a la 2nd edición del Billfish Release Tournament, un evento que se ha convertido en un referente para la pesca deportiva en México e incluso de participantes internacionales. El torneo se llevará a cabo del 10 al 12 de mayo de 2024 y busca superar el éxito de la edición anterior, que contó con la participación de 105 embarcaciones.
Anteriormente llamado “Torneo de Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas”, El International
Billfish Release Tournament estrena un nuevo presidente del comité organizador, el capitán de altura, Jefferson Marín Flores, quien ha
armado un equipo de trabajo para que busca darle un nuevo impulso a esta competencia.
Este año, el comité organizador del torneo ha implementado algunos cambios para mejorar la experiencia de los participantes y la sustentabilidad del evento. Se buscará colocar chips o dispositivos de rastreo a algunos ejemplares para conocer sus nuevos recorridos, precisó la vocera del comité organizador, Brenda Ortega.
Al respecto, añadió que por haber pescado en mares de Centroamérica y Sudamérica, “nos hemos empapado de técnicas que tienen otras personas para saber en dónde van a buscar los peces, ¿Cómo saben esos pescadores que ahí en esa época hay un pescado? Porque se dieron a la tarea de usar dispositivos y estudiar las corridas de los peces”
En años anteriores, era común ver a pescadores llegar al muelle San Miguel en el anterior “Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas” con ejemplares de medidas importantes, pero cada vez ha venido a menos.
Precisó que “en este torneo queremos darle una visión y un rumbo un poco científico. Vamos a tener colaboraciones y asistencias de personas que van a estudiar el impacto ambiental de la pesca”.
Entre los cambios más importantes se encuentran:
- Horario de salida: Se ha adelantado la hora de salida de las embarcaciones de 8:00 a.m. a 6:00 a.m. para aprovechar las mejores condiciones de pesca. El horario se modifico en gran parte por peticion de los mismos participantes, quienes con su amplia experiencia de mar, saben que a horas mas tempranas del día, se obtienen mejores ejemplares.
- Reglamento: Se ha modificado el reglamento del torneo, incluyendo la puntuación por especie, las medidas de los peces y otros aspectos.
- Asistencia técnica: Se ofrecerá asistencia técnica a los participantes durante el torneo para garantizar la correcta medición y liberación de los peces.
- Promoción: Se ha intensificado la promoción del evento a través de entrevistas con capitanes y pescadores históricos de Cozumel, así como en redes sociales.
El Billfish Release Tournament tiene como objetivos:
- Evolucionar el torneo: Implementar cambios para mejorar la experiencia de los participantes y la sustentabilidad del evento.
- Potencializar el evento: Atraer a más participantes, tanto nacionales como internacionales.
- Fomentar la participación de las mujeres: Se ofrecerá un reconocimiento especial a las mujeres participantes.
- Realizar un torneo sustentable: Se seguirá contando con la certificación de la IFA (International Game Fish Association).
- Unir a la sociedad: Crear un evento que beneficie a la comunidad de Cozumel.
El torneo se llevará a cabo en las aguas del Mar Caribe frente a las costas de Cozumel. Las especies objetivo del torneo son el marlin azul, el pez espada y el pez vela. Los participantes podrán utilizar diferentes técnicas de pesca, como la pesca al curricán y la pesca con mosca.
Se otorgarán premios a los equipos que capturen los peces más grandes de cada especie. También se entregarán reconocimientos a los equipos que liberen la mayor cantidad de peces y a las mujeres participantes.
El Billfish Release Tournament no solo es un evento para los amantes de la pesca, sino también para toda la familia. Durante el torneo se organizarán diferentes actividades para el público en general, como demostraciones de pesca, talleres para niños y eventos gastronómicos.
El 2ndo Billfish Release Tournament se perfila como un evento inolvidable que reunirá a los mejores pescadores del mundo en un entorno único como lo es Cozumel. Se espera que este año el torneo sea un éxito rotundo y que contribuya a la promoción de la isla como un destino turístico de primer nivel.
