Cozumel at the Forefront of Rotary International: Sustainable Water Systems and Permanent School Furniture Inaugurated
Cozumel, Q. Roo. – The Rotary Club of Cozumel for the 2025-2026 term, under the presidency of Carlos Daniel Pomol Gómez, and within the framework of the official visit of the Governor of Rotary International’s Magic District 4195, Gerardo Corres, celebrated the inauguration of two key projects focused on sustainability, health, and the well-being of the island’s student community
The visit’s agenda included the launch of a rainwater harvesting and purification system at a technical high school and the delivery of permanent furniture at a professional technical education college. These efforts align with Rotary’s areas of focus, such as water and sanitation, ecology, and supporting family economics.
The most ambitious project inaugurated was the Rainwater-to-Drinking Water System at the Technical High School No. 6 (). President Carlos Daniel Pomol Gómez detailed the magnitude of the work, which consists of collecting and storing 30,000 liters of rainwater. After purification, the water is distributed free of charge to the school’s students.
“This allows Rotary’s areas of focus, such as water sanitation, ecology, and the reduction of PET plastic, to be reflected in these actions,” stated Pomol Gómez. The system not only guarantees access to potable water and features a water dispenser for garrafones (large water bottles) but also includes plans to “install coolers in the short term,” a component whose implementation is already being managed.
This comprehensive effort was made possible by a Global Grant, in which Rotary clubs from abroad participated. Governor Corres specified that the direct resources from Rotary International applied to the project amount to nearly $40,000 dollars, while President Pomol Gómez indicated that the total grant effort being applied at the school exceeds $56,000 dollars. This total amount includes funds for the inaugurated infrastructure and its future components. It is estimated that around 1,200 students, from both morning and afternoon shifts, will directly benefit from this access to free and safe water.
In an additional effort, and in collaboration with CONALEP (a national technical education college), the Rotary club also delivered 11 tables with their respective permanent benches to this latter campus. These tables serve as a “meeting point” for young people to eat their meals, reinforcing the message that “United to do good, society, clubs, government, and institutions can achieve many things,” as highlighted by President Pomol Gómez.
The Governor of Magic District 4195, Gerardo Corres, expressed his satisfaction with the results of the management in Cozumel, emphasizing the importance of continuity, innovation, and partnerships promoted by Rotary International.
Regarding the rainwater system, Corres commented that it is “an idea that seems very simple, but which requires a lot of technical expertise and especially resources.” He confirmed that the project received resources from Rotary International of almost $40,000 dollars through the global grant. The Governor was able to verify its operation by “drinking the already treated rainwater,” highlighting the reduction in PET plastic production and the use of excess water for irrigation, which makes it a truly sustainable project.
Concerning the benches delivered to CONALEP, which represented an investment of more than $100,000 pesos, Corres pointed out that they arose from a student’s need and are spaces constructed with permanent material to guarantee their durability.
Governor Corres used the visit to emphasize the relevance of Quintana Roo in the district’s Rotarian activities, noting that the Rotary Club of Cozumel is an “avant-garde club” and its “leading club in fundraising” for Rotary’s flagship project: the global eradication of polio.
The inauguration of these projects in Cozumel underscores the commitment of the local Rotary Club and Rotary International to investing in infrastructure that promotes sustainability, water sanitation, and the nutritional healthof students. The application of global grants and inter-institutional collaboration reflects Rotary’s philosophy of transforming simple ideas into permanent solutions for community benefit.
Cozumel a la Vanguardia de Rotary International: Inauguran Sistemas Sustentables de Agua y Mobiliario Escolar Permanente.
Cozumel, Q. Roo. – El Club Rotario de Cozumel para el periodo 2025-2026, bajo la presidencia de Carlos Daniel Pomol Gómez, y en el marco de la visita oficial del Gobernador del Distrito Mágico 4195 de Rotary International, Gerardo Corres, celebró la inauguración de dos proyectos clave enfocados en la sustentabilidad, la salud y el bienestar de la comunidad estudiantil de la isla.
La agenda de la visita incluyó la puesta en marcha de un sistema de captación y purificación de agua pluvial en una secundaria técnica y la entrega de mobiliario permanente en un colegio de educación profesional técnica. Estos esfuerzos se alinean con las áreas de interés de Rotary, como el saneamiento del agua, la ecología y el apoyo a la economía familiar.
El proyecto más ambicioso inaugurado fue el Sistema de Agua de Lluvia para Beber en la Escuela Secundaria Técnica No. 6. El presidente Carlos Daniel Pomol Gómez detalló la magnitud de la obra, que consiste en la captación y almacenamiento de 30,000 litros de agua pluvial que, tras ser purificada, se distribuye de manera gratuita a los estudiantes del plantel.
“Esto permite que las áreas de interés de Rotary, como es el saneamiento de agua, la ecología y la reducción del PET, se vean reflejadas con estas acciones,” afirmó Pomol Gómez. El sistema no solo garantiza el acceso a agua potable y cuenta con un dispensador de garrafones, sino que también tiene considerado a “corto plazo poner unos enfriadores”, un componente cuya implementación ya está en gestión.
Este esfuerzo integral fue posible gracias a una Subvención Global (Global Grant), en la que participaron clubes rotarios del extranjero. El Gobernador Corres precisó que los recursos directos de Rotary International aplicados al proyecto se acercan a los $40,000 dólares, mientras que el Presidente Pomol Gómez indicó que el esfuerzo total de la subvención que está siendo aplicada en esa escuela supera los $56,000 dólares. Este monto total incluye los fondos para la infraestructura inaugurada y para sus componentes futuros. Se estima que alrededor de 1,200 alumnos, tanto del turno matutino como del vespertino, se benefician directamente con este acceso a agua gratuita y segura.
En un esfuerzo adicional y colaborativo con el CONALEP, el club rotario también entregó 11 mesas con sus respectivas bancas permanentes en este último plantel. Estas mesas sirven como “punto de reunión” para que los jóvenes puedan consumir sus alimentos, fortaleciendo el mensaje de que “Unidos para hacer el bien, sociedad, clubes, gobierno e instituciones podemos lograr muchas cosas”, como destacó el presidente Pomol Gómez.
El Gobernador del Distrito Mágico 4195, Gerardo Corres, expresó su satisfacción por los resultados de la gestión en Cozumel, destacando la importancia de la continuidad, la innovación y las alianzas que promueve Rotary International.
Sobre el sistema de agua pluvial, Corres comentó que es “una idea que parece muy simple, pero que requiere de mucha técnica y sobre todo recursos”. Confirmó que el proyecto contó con recursos de Rotary International por casi $40,000 dólares en la subvención global. El Gobernador pudo constatar su funcionamiento al “tomar agua de lluvia ya tratada”, resaltando la reducción en la producción de plásticos PET y el uso del agua excedente para riego, lo que lo convierte en un proyecto sustentable.
En cuanto a las bancas entregadas en el CONALEP, que representaron una inversión de más de $100,000 pesos, Corres señaló que nacieron de la necesidad de un alumno y que son espacios construidos con material permanente para garantizar su durabilidad.
El Gobernador Corres aprovechó la visita para destacar la relevancia de Quintana Roo en el rotarismo distrital, señalando que el Club Rotario de Cozumel es un “club a la vanguardia” y su “club líder en recaudación” para el proyecto insignia de Rotary: la erradicación mundial de la polio.
La inauguración de estos proyectos en Cozumel subraya el compromiso del Club Rotario local y de Rotary International con la inversión en infraestructura que promueve la sustentabilidad, el saneamiento hídrico y la salud alimentaria de los estudiantes. La aplicación de subvenciones globales y la colaboración interinstitucional reflejan la filosofía de Rotary de transformar ideas sencillas en soluciones permanentes para el beneficio comunitario.
