Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico — The municipality of Cozumel is gearing up for the fifth edition of its Day of the Dead Festival, “Almas con Tradición” (Souls with Tradition). This annual celebration brings families and friends together to honor and remember their deceased loved ones. The official program presentation and poster unveiling took place at an event headed by the Cozumel Municipal President, alongside various local authorities.

The festival, which runs from October 28 to November 2, 2025, aims to revive the island’s customs and cultural roots, actively involving both the local community and visitors, and establishing itself as a cultural benchmark and a major tourist draw.

Key Activities and Detailed Program

Engineer Azalia Morales Mejía, the City’s Chief Administrative Officer (Oficial Mayor), was in charge of detailing the comprehensive program of events, which is designed to fill the streets and plazas with color, art, music, and tradition.

Program Highlights:

• October 28: Kicking off with the traditional candle lighting and illumination of the Monumental Skull at the San Miguel Cemetery (6:30 PM), followed by the “Souls of the Island” video mapping presentation and the “Procession of the Souls” (7:15 PM), which starts at the cemetery and travels along 5th Avenue. The day concludes with the official inauguration and an artistic/cultural event at Benito Juárez Park, featuring pre-Hispanic dances and presentations of the Chantolo (Veracruz) and Shandú (Oaxaca) traditions.
• October 29: The “Maleconeada” (7:00 PM), a festive stroll along Rafael E. Melgar Avenue, will take place, concluding at Benito Juárez Park. Additionally, there will be the Youth Catrinas and Catrines Expression Contest (8:00 PM).
• October 30: The Regional Maleconada of Souls (6:30 PM) is scheduled, featuring traditional jaranero groups. Afterward, the Monumental Day of the Dead Altar will be exhibited (7:00 PM), followed by a multi-category Costume Contest (8:30 PM).
• October 31: Activities focus on children, with “Trick or Treat” and the Children’s Costume Contest (6:00 PM), followed by the “Express Yourself Dancing on Halloween 2025” event (8:00 PM).
• November 1: Dedicated to the “Peninsular Regional Night: Hanal Pixán (Food of the Souls).” From 7:00 to 9:00 PM, the Mukipollo Festival will be held, featuring the exhibition and sale of pip and pan de muerto (Day of the Dead bread), and a performance by the Typical Orchestra of the Autonomous University of Yucatán at Benito Juárez Park.
• November 2: The festival wraps up with simultaneous masses at the cemeteries (11:00 AM and 4:00 PM), the “5K Souls Run 2025” (6:00 PM), and the closing ceremony (7:30 PM), ending with a popular Catrinas and Catrines dance (8:45 PM).

Institutional Recognition and Tourism Projection

In his address, the Cozumel Mayor emphasized the festival’s status as a established tourist attraction. “This is an event we are going to continue because it’s not only about our traditions; it’s also a tourist draw,” he stated, noting the interest of local hoteliers in the event’s itinerary. He stressed that the festivity reflects “the connection between life and death” and “the joy of our Mexican culture,” inviting both cozumeleños (Cozumel residents) and visitors to participate in this “living culture and tradition.”

Calls for submissions for the various contests, including Catrinas, costumes, and others, will be available starting from the presentation date, actively encouraging community participation. The “Almas con Tradición” festival seeks to reaffirm local identity and honor memory through its offerings, dances, and music, operating under the premise that “to remember is to live again.”

Cozumel, Quintana Roo. — El municipio de Cozumel se prepara para recibir la quinta edición de su Festival de Día de Muertos “Almas con Tradición”, una celebración que anualmente congrega a familiares y amigos para honrar y recordar a sus seres queridos fallecidos. La presentación oficial del programa y la develación del póster se llevaron a cabo en un evento presidido por el Presidente municipal de Cozumel, acompañado por diversas autoridades locales.

El festival, que se realizará del 28 de octubre al 2 de noviembre de 2025, tiene como objetivo revivir las costumbres y raíces culturales de la isla, involucrando activamente tanto a la comunidad local como a los visitantes, y consolidándose como un referente cultural y atractivo turístico.

Actividades Centrales y Programa Detallado

La Ingeniera Azalia Morales Mejía, Oficial Mayor del ayuntamiento, fue la encargada de detallar el amplio programa de actividades, diseñado para llenar las calles y plazas de color, arte, música y tradición.

Puntos clave del programa:

• 28 de octubre: Inicio con el tradicional encendido de velas e iluminación del Cráneo Monumental en el Panteón San Miguel (6:30 PM), seguido de la presentación de videomapping “Almas de la Isla” y la “Procesión de las Ánimas” (7:15 PM) que inicia en el panteón y recorre la 5ª Avenida. La jornada culmina con el protocolo inaugural y evento artístico-cultural en el Parque Benito Juárez, incluyendo danzas prehispánicas y presentaciones de las tradiciones Chantolo (Veracruz) y Shandú (Oaxaca).
• 29 de octubre: Se llevará a cabo la “Maleconeada” (7:00 PM) sobre la avenida Rafael E. Melgar, culminando en el Parque Benito Juárez. Además, se realizará el Concurso Expresión Juvenil Catrinas y Catrines (8:00 PM).
• 30 de octubre: Programada la Maleconada Regional de Ánimas (6:30 PM) con la participación de grupos jaraneros. Posteriormente, se exhibirá el Altar Monumental de Día de Muertos (7:00 PM) y se realizará el Concurso de Disfraces de diferentes categorías (8:30 PM).
• 31 de octubre: Las actividades se centran en el público infantil con el “Dulce o Truco” y el concurso de disfraces infantil (6:00 PM), seguido del evento “Exprésate Bailando en Halloween 2025” (8:00 PM).
• 1 de noviembre: Día dedicado a la “Noche Regional Peninsular: Hanal Pixán (Comida de las Ánimas)”. De 7:00 a 9:00 PM, se celebrará el Festival del Mukipollo, con exhibición y venta de pip y pan de muerto, y la presentación de la Orquesta Típica de la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán en el Parque Benito Juárez.
• 2 de noviembre: El festival concluye con misas simultáneas en los panteones (11:00 AM y 4:00 PM), la “Carrera de Ánimas 5K 2025” (6:00 PM) y el protocolo de clausura (7:30 PM), finalizando con un baile popular de Catrinas y Catrines (8:45 PM).

Reconocimiento Institucional y Proyección Turística

En su intervención, el Presidente de Cozumel destacó que el festival es un atractivo turístico consolidado. “Es un evento al que le vamos a dar continuidad porque no solamente son nuestras tradiciones, sino también es un atractivo turístico”, afirmó, señalando el interés de los hoteleros por el itinerario del evento. Subrayó que la festividad refleja “la conexión entre la vida y la muerte” y “la alegría de nuestra cultura mexicana”, invitando a cosumeleños y visitantes a participar en esta “cultura viva tradición”.

Las convocatorias para los diversos concursos, incluyendo Catrinas, disfraces y otros, estarán disponibles a partir de la fecha de la presentación, promoviendo la participación activa de la comunidad. El festival “Almas con Tradición” busca, a través de sus ofrendas, danzas y música, reafirmar la identidad local y honrar la memoria, bajo la premisa de que “recordar es volver a vivir”.
