Take a note about the process to obtain the Biometric CURP

The Individual Population Registry Code, or CURP, is an 18-digit code assigned to all Mexicans upon birth registration to alphanumerically identify each individual. When a foreign national is granted the migratory status of temporary or permanent resident, the National Population Registry (RENAPO), through the National Institute of Migration (INM), automatically assigns a CURP.

In Mexico, as of 2026, the biometric CURP was implemented as an official identification document both for Mexican citizens, naturalized foreigners, and foreigners with temporary or permanent migratory status residing legally in Mexico. This document includes the holder’s fingerprints, photograph, and iris scan. The aim is to prevent identity theft, streamline processes, and strengthen security in all types of transactions and fraud.

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the Mexican president, has indicated that completing the process in 2026 is not mandatory, but she emphasized that it is important to do so since in the future you will not be possible to do certain private or government-related procedures without presenting the Biometric CURP.

To obtain the Biometric CURP, the applicant must be physically present, and the process is carried out at authorized citizen service modules of the national Population Registry (RENAPO) or Civil Register (Vital Statistics) Office. The documents Mexican citizens must submit are:

Valid official identification (INE, passport or professional license)
CURP
Birth certificate
Proof of address (no older than three months)
Email address

Minors must be accompanied by their father, mother, or legal guardian who must show their own official identification.

Foreign nationals with resident migratory status, RENAPO has not yet confirmed whether or not the process will be handled by the local INM office. We recommend staying informed and check for updates with the INM.

At the time of publishing this article, according to Bernardo Alonso Marrufo, Civil Registry (Vital Statistics) Registrar in Cozumel, the Biometric CURP cards are not yet being issued in Cozumel because the process is currently in the data collection phase. This process will be slowly applied in the municipalities, so it is important to stay informed through the local news outlets and/or reliable social media sources. In the meantime, you may continue using the standard CURP. Authorities estimate that before the end of 2026m issuance of the Biometric CURP will begin.

It is important to keep in mind that the Biometric CURP will be required for the following:

To be able to sign up in government programs.
For Mexican nationals and naturalized foreigners, apply for the INE (voting card) and passports.
Health services for Mexican citizens and naturalized citizens, as well as for foreigners with migratory status as temporary or permanent residents.
Tax Administration Service (SAT) formalities.
Sign up at the Federal Taxpayers’ Registry (RFC)
In the workplace, it will be required for payroll processing and registration with various government agencies.
To enroll your children in public or private schools and universities.
To apply for a Mexican driver’s license and to obtain or renew your vehicle license plates.
To open bank accounts, apply for loans, mortgages, and conduct other banking transactions.
When buying imported goods from online retailers, these retailers are required to ask for your CURP number.

La Clave Única de Registro de Población, o su acrónimo CURP, es una clave de 18 dígitos que se asigna a todos los mexicanos a partir del registro de nacimiento para identificar alfanuméricamente a esa persona de manera individual. Cuando a un extranjero se le concede la calidad migratoria de residente temporal o permanente el Registro Nacional de Población (RENAPO) a través del Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) asigna una CURP de manera automática.

En México a partir de 2026 se implementó la CURP biométrica como documento de identificación oficial, tanto para los ciudadanos mexicanos, extranjeros naturalizados como para extranjeros con condición migratoria temporal o permanente residiendo regularmente en México. Este documento incluye las huellas digitales, fotografía y escaneo del iris del titular. Con ello se pretende combatir la suplantación de identidad agilizar procesos y fortalecer la seguridad en todo tipo de transacciones y fraudes.

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, la presidenta mexicana, ha indicado que no es obligatorio realizar el trámite en 2026 pero destacó que es importante hacerlo ya que en el futuro no le será posible hacer ciertos trámites privados o ante gobierno si no se presenta la CURP biométrica.

Para el trámite de la CURP biométrica se requiere la presencia física del solicitante y el proceso se realiza en módulos de atención ciudadana autorizados del Registro Nacional de Población (RENAPO) o en el Registro Civil. Los documentos que las personas de nacionalidad mexicana requieren presentar son:

Identificación oficial vigente (INE, pasaporte, o cédula profesional)
CURP
Acta de nacimiento
Comprobante de domicilio (no mayor a tres meses)
Correo electrónico

Los menores de edad deben ir acompañados de su padre, madre o tutor legal con su propia identificación oficial.

Para el caso de extranjeros con condición migratoria de residentes, la RENAPO aún no confirma si el trámite se hará o no a través de la oficina local del INM. Se sugiere que estén pendientes y consulten al INM.

Al momento que publicamos este artículo, de acuerdo con Bernardo Alonso Marrufo, Oficial del Registro Civil en Cozumel, aún no se expiden las credenciales de CURP biométrica en Cozumel pues se encuentran en etapa de recopilación de datos. Este proceso se aplicará en los municipios poco a poco, por lo que hay que mantenerse informados a través de los medios informativos locales y/o redes sociales confiables. Mientras tanto se podrá continuar utilizando la CURP acostumbrada. Las autoridades estiman que antes de concluir 2026, iniciará la expedición de la CURP biométrica.

Es importante tener presente que dicha CURP biométrica será requerida para los siguientes:

El registro en programas de gobierno.
Obtención de INE y de pasaporte para mexicanos y personas naturalizadas.
Servicios de salud, para ciudadanos mexicanos y naturalizados así como para extranjeros con calidades migratorias de residente temporal o permanente.
Trámites ante el Servicio de Administración Tributaria (SAT).
Inscripción ante el Registro Federal de Contribuyentes (RFC).
En el empleo se solicitará para el pago de nómina y para el registro ante diversas dependencias de gobierno.
Para inscribir a sus hijos en escuelas y universidades públicas o privadas.
Para tramitar la licencia mexicana y para obtener/renovar las placas de su vehículo.
Para apertura de cuentas bancarias, solicitar créditos, hipotecas y otras operaciones bancarias.
Al comprar productos importados en tiendas en línea, estas tiendas están obligadas a solicitarle su número de CURP.
