Meet the Cozumel4You Admin Team: Laura Wilkinson
Editors Note: It’s finally the end of the series – and since I can’t put it off any longer here would be MY answers to the interview. I hope you learned a bit about our hardworking team. I know I’m a little biased – but I think they’re all fantastic – Laura
C4Y: How long have you lived on the island?
I moved here in July 1999 – on my mother’s birthday, much to her dismay. I was a Master Instructor and looking to staff a few more IDCs before moving up the PADI ladder.
C4Y: What made you choose Cozumel?
I never really intended to spend a long time here. In fact, I was working in Negril Jamaica and on my way to Ambergris Cay to find another Dive Instructor job when I stopped here for a two-week holiday – that hasn’t really ended yet. At the time the town was hopping with divers.
That’s back in the day when your local dive shop would send down a group of 20 for 4 days, and on the last night all the dive shop staff would go out with them as well. It was hard work, but it was really fun, and I met some great people from great shops, that still come and visit to this day.
C4Y: What’s one of your favorite things about island life?
That’s actually what’s made me stay here over 20 years. I really love the island; like almost literally everything about it.
I love the people that live here, the weird mix of foreigners, nationals and locals.
I love the blues of the oceans. I love the beaches. I love how we’re separate from the mainland. I love how people return again and again and it’s like having a really fun relative come to visit.
I love how someone always tells me when there’s lemons to be found in island supers, and strangers at stoplights tell me if my tire looks low.
C4Y: Can you tell us a little about your personal life? Are you married? Do you have children? What does your family think of your decision?
I’m married to Fabian Gonzalez. (He’s an admin in the group – and the first person we interviewed in this series) In November, twenty years ago we got married at Punta Morena, in front of about 100 of our closest friends and family. We then had a really fun beach party and played volleyball. His team won.
We don’t have any children, but we’ve had a host of so many weird and wonderful pets – we’ve even fostered for the HSCI a few times. (If you haven’t done it – I highly recommend it – it’s like the Peace Corps, but saving animals – “the toughest job you’ll ever love”) We’re down to just 2 dogs – one is a HSCI “Pet of the Week” fail, 2 cats, 2 birds and there’s still a few lobsters kicking around in that tank downstairs, much to my chagrin.
C4Y: What do you do for a living on the island? Tell us of your business?
I publish the Cozumel 4 You NEWS and website. I try and get as many people as I can involved in the content writing – since my dream is to have it be a real community news source (If you’re interested in a regular column or have some story ideas get in touch!) I do some social media for a few clients, I freelance write – mostly tour descriptions and Cozumel related articles and last September – Fabian and I built and opened, Cozumel Apartments.
Cozumel Apartments is mostly Fabian’s gig – he does most of the day to day maintenance and operations – but I do enjoy doing the bookings and of course posting cute photos of my animals to entice people to come and stay here.
C4Y: What’s your favorite administrator moment?
First of all there wouldn’t be a “great admin” moment without the help of the entire team. Now that this series is coming to an end, I’m really hoping that the readers got a chance to see what makes this group (of all women, and my husband, oddly enough) so special. We’re all different, we have a lot of different views and opinions and each have special areas of skills and talents: that combined together work really really well.
We weren’t all friends first – it’s not a YaYa Sisterhood, or Travelling Pants kind of story – in fact, until we all got together and had a “apps & drinks” night I think some of us didn’t even know each other in “real life.” I think there’s even an admin who doesn’t really know Fabs since he dubbed the meeting “too girly” and bailed to watch tennis on TV.
I’ve actually been stalking a new admin. I want someone young, preferably bilingual, maybe who grew up on the island. I’d like to add a younger fresh perspective to the group, (someone who stays out past 9 pm) If you know someone who fits the bill – feel free to hit up my in-box as well. I’m always open to new ideas, and we’re probably overdue for a group meeting
C4Y: If someone where considering moving to the island what advice would you give them?
Every.single.person.who.lives.here.is.really.weird. The locals are weird – they’ve lived here for generations. The nationals are weird, because they moved from other places, usually without family or friends, to live in this beautiful island, and well, the ExPat community: don’t even get me started on them!
The key is – and here’s the really important part – you have to take the time to find your own tribe of weird.
What’s a freeze-dried whackaloon in my book might be an adorable eccentric in yours, and vice versa. The people you meet when you first move here might not be your long term friends, or that large fun gang that all hangs out every single night might not hold your new best friend. It can take awhile to find people who have the same interests, moral compass, and enjoyment of life that you do, so keep your eyes open – there’s a lot of adorable eccentrics out there just waiting to be adopted!

C4Y: ¿Desde hace cuánto tiempo vives en la Isla?
Me mudé aquí en Julio de 1999, el día del cumpleaños de mi madre; causándole gran consternación. Contaba con la capacitación como Maestro Instructor en Buceo y buscaba más personas interesadas en el Curso de Desarrollo de Instructores (IDC, por sus siglas en inglés) antes de ascender el escalafón PADI.
C4Y: ¿Qué te motivó a elegir Cozumel?
En realidad no fue mi intención pasar mucho tiempo aquí. De hecho, trabajaba en Negril, Jamaica y en camino a Ambergris Cay buscando otro trabajo cuando me detuve aquí para pasar unas vacaciones de dos semanas, que francamente aún no han terminado. En aquel entonces, la ciudad estaba abarrotada con buzos.
Esa era la época cuando su tienda local de buceo enviaba a un grupo a bucear por 4 días y en por la noche del último día, el personal también salía con ellos. Era un trabajo duro, pero también era muy divertido; y conocía a gente estupenda de grandiosas tiendas de buceo, y que continúan viniendo de visita hasta el día de hoy.
Esa era la época cuando su tienda local de buceo enviaba a un grupo a bucear por 4 días y en la noche del ultimo día, el personal también salía con ellos. Era un trabajo duro, pero también era muy divertido; y conocía a gente estupenda de grandiosas tiendas de buceo, y que continúan viniendo de visita hasta el día de hoy.
C4Y: Platícanos sobre una de tus cosas favoritas acerca de la vida en la Isla.
En realidad eso es lo que hace más de 20 años hizo que me quedara aquí. Verdaderamente amaba la Isla, al igual que casi todo acerca de esta.
Me encanta la gente que vive aquí; esa mezcla loca de extranjeros, nacionales y locales.
Me encantan los colores azules de los océanos. Me encantan las playas. Me encanta cómo estamos separados de tierra firme. Me encanta como la gente regresa una y otra vez, y es como si viniera uno a visitar a un pariente muy divertido. Me encanta como es que siempre alguien que me dice cuando hay limones en los supermercados de la Isla, y extraños que me dicen si la llana de me auto está baja.
C4Y:¿Puedes contarnos algo de tu vida personal? ¿Eres casada? ¿Tienes hijos? ¿Qué piensa tu familia acerca de tu decisión?
Estoy casada con Fabián González (Él es un administrador del grupo y la primera persona que entrevistamos en esta serie). En Noviembre de hace veinte años contrajimos matrimonio en Punta Morena, frente a casi 100 de nuestros amigos más cercanos y familias. Luego tuvimos una fiesta muy divertida en la playa y jugamos vóleibol. Ganó el equipo de Fabián.
No tenemos hijos, sin embargo hemos tenido una multitud de mascotas raras y maravillosas; incluso en varias ocasiones hemos sido hogares de cuidados temporales para la Sociedad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel. (Si aún no lo han hecho se los recomiendo ampliamente, es como el Cuerpo de Paz pero salvando animales: “el trabajo más difícil que más amará”). Ahora sólo tenemos 2perros. Uno es un fracaso como “Mascota de la Semana” de la Sociedad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel, 2 gatos, 2 pájaros y aún andan algunas langostas pataleando en el tanque de la planta baja; a mi pesar.
C4Y:¿A qué te dedicas en la Isla?Platícanos acerca de tu negocio.
Publico el boletín de NOTICIAS Cozumel 4 You así como el sitio web. Procuro hacer la mayor cantidad posible de gente participe en tanto me dedico a la redacción del contenido, ya que mi sueño es tener una verdadera fuente de noticias para la comunidad (Si le interesa escribir una columna de manera regular o tiene grandes historias, ¡póngase en contacto!) Me encargo de los medios sociales de algunos clientes; escribo d manera independiente, sobre todo descripciones de excursiones y artículos relacionados con Cozumel. En Septiembre pasado, Fabián y yo construimos y abrimos Cozumel Apartments.
Cozumel Apartments es más que nada trabajo de Fabián; la mayor parte del día se dedica al mantenimiento y las operaciones, pero a mí me gusta hacer las reservaciones y, claro está, publicar bonitas fotografías de mis animales para atraer a la gente para que venga y se hospede aquí.
C4Y:¿Cuál es tu momento favorito como administrador?
Ante todo, no existiría un “gran momento como administrador” sin la ayuda de todo el equipo. Ahora que esta serie llega a su fin, realmente espero que los lectores hayan tenido la oportunidad de ver lo que hace que este grupo (de todas las mujeres y mi esposo, sorprendentemente) sea tan especial. Todos somos diferentes, todos tenemos muchos puntos de vista y opiniones distintas, y cada uno tenemos habilidades y talentos especiales: la combinación ha funcionado muy, muy bien.
Al principio no éramos amigos. No es una historia como las hermandades de las películas “Divinos Secretos” o “Los Pantalones Viajeros”. De hecho, hasta que nos reunimos y una noche de aperitivos y tragos, algunos de nosotros ni siquiera nos conocíamos “en persona”. Incluso creo que hay algún administrador que ni siquiera conoce a Fabián ya que él apodó la reunión como “demasiado femenina” y huyó a ver un partido tenis en la TV.
De hecho he estado acosando a un nuevo administrador. Quiero a alguien joven, de preferencia bilingüe, tal vez alguien que creció en la Isla. Quisiera agregar una perspectiva fresca al grupo (alguien que esté despierto después de las 9 pm). Si saben de alguien adecuado, mándenme un mensaje también. Siempre estoy abierta a nuevas ideas, y es posible que hayamos retrasado una reunión de grupo.
C4Y: Si alguien está considerando mudarse a la Isla, ¿qué le recomendarías?
Roda persona que viva aquí, es verdaderamente rara. Los locales son raros, han vivido aquí durante generaciones. Los nacionales son raros pues se mudaron a esta bella Isla procedentes de otros lugares, por lo general sin familia o amigos; y, bueno, la comunidad de ex patriados, ¡no me hagan hablar acerca de ellos!
Esta es una parte ciertamente importante: la clave es que es necesario que se tomen el tiempo necesario para encontrar su propia y rara tribu.
Lo que para mi es una persona loca, es posible que para ustedes sea una persona adorablemente excéntrica, y viceversa. Es posible que a la gente que usted conoce cuando recién se muda aquí no lleguen a ser sus amigos a largo plazo, o tal vez grupo que sale todas las noches pueda no tener a su mejor y nuevo amigo. Quizá tome algún tiempo conocer a las personas que comparten sus mismos intereses, orientación moral y disfruten la vida como usted. Así mantenga abiertos los ojos. ¡Allá afuera hay muchos excéntricos adorables que esperan ser adoptados!

Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años. Laura escapó al Caribe hace años, desplazándose de una isla a otra dando clases de BUCEO. Se dedicó a perder el tiempo en Jamaica y finalmente se detuvo en Cozumel para pasar unas vacaciones de 2 semanas que aún no terminan. Convenciendo a sus padres que pagaran una elegante universidad privada, obtuvo su título en Periodismo y Laura crea semanalmente Cozumel 4You, medios sociales y artículos promocionales sobre la Isla y también es moderadora en el grupo Cozumel 4 You en Facebook que actualmente cuenta con 25,000 miembros. Fabián, s umuy tolerante marido, desde hace mucho tiempo se resignó a no tener vida privada, pues se ha visto implicado en los diversos proyectos y planes que urde Laura. Son orgullosos padres de diversos perros y gatos rescatados. Mientras contempla su paso a través de la vida en el Caribe mexicano,Laura continúa siendo la pesadilla en la existencia de su muy tradicional suegra mexicana.
