A massive blackout that affected 5 states throughout southeast Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula occurred this past Tuesday, leaving the entire island of Cozumel without power for several hours.

Shortly after 11 am on the 23rd, millions of people in Tabasco, Campeche, Vera Cruz, Yucatan and Quintana Roo, were affected.  Obviously, communication was hampered, businesses were affected, and even public transportation compromised since traffic signals were down.

According to reports from the Federal Electricity Commission (Comision Federal de Electricidad)   a malfunction on the Grijalva Hydrological complex resulted in the “Mega-Blackout” as it is now being called.
