The Paratriathlete Team of Curtis B. Anderson & Chris Kemp: “Cozumel IM is Very Inclusive”

Everyone knows that Ironman competitions are physically and mentally demanding challenges, it’s even more so for paratriathletes.

Paratriathletes are simply triathletes that complete  ith a physical disability, and present in a wide variety of categories, including PTVI (visually impaired) PT2 (mobility impairments)  and more.

The very first paratriathlete participated in an Ironman in 1994, and they’ve been crushing boundaries ever since.  This is one such story about the Team of Curtis Anderson and Chris Kemp.

Curtis Anderson, is an Ironman competitor in his own right, in fact he was just in Kona HI, for the championships several weeks ago.  Chris Kemp (Team Chris) , has completed 2 70.3 IMs (or half ironman), 5 marathons, 10 half marathons, and many more.

Curtis & Chirs meet for the first time

“I met Chris through another team named Team Liza that successfully raced in Cozumel last year.  I expressed my desire to help in anyway I could and they suggested I reach out to Chris, which I did, and we then met at IM Texas, where we were both racing, me individually and he with another guide,” stated Curtis.

Chris’ mom Beverly says “Chris is a 34 year old quadriplegic.  His lungs collapsed after he was born. I was told that he would always be a vegetable and wouldn’t live to be a month old.  He has overcome almost everything the doctors told me he wouldn’t do.  He’s now no medical issues at all – his only limitations are physical and he doesn’t let that slow him down.

Curtis & Chris Start the Swim

Chris’ outgoing spirit made quite the impression at the Cozumel Panties & Pajamas Fundraising Run, an annual “fun run” prior to the competition that benefits island charities.

Chris “has to be lifted in and out of the raft that I pulled him in..because of that I had to swim from the shore as opposed to off the dock, and had to swim to a nearby beach as opposed to coming out of the water on stairs…so technically Chris and I swam a tiny bit longer than all the other athletes,” said Curtis.

For the Cozumel Ironman, Curtis and Chris used a special chair from Team Liza, which was quite the tight fit.  Chris has a chair that is good for running but it’s a bit heavy and not aerodynamic for the bike portion of the competition.

“The bike and run were also the same as the other athletes but unlike the other athletes, Chris is not able to take care of himself, so we had to stop at each aid station on the bike and most on the run to get him fluids, through a straw that I carried, to feed him and wipe his face.”

“Chris cheered me on!  But he also teased me a LOT as he is extremely funny and witty!!  We joked back and forth most of the day and while he was very uncomfortable for most of the day, he never complained.  At time I worried it was too much for him and he would repeat “I’m ok, I’m ok”  over and over again, and he wouldn’t let me quit!  He truly personifies the true characteristics of an Ironman!”

The pair finished the race in 16 hours 11 minutes and 50 seconds.  That means they cruised through the finish line at 11:49:57 pm after a grueling day of crushing it.

What ‘s next for the dynamic pair?  “We will absolutely do more races!  We are already signed up for 2 marathons and a half IM in Lubbock TX, as well as there being a high chance that we will return to Cozumel next year together,” said Curtis.

Chris also has a lot of races planned:  he’s got an Eagleman with another competitor Jeff Lampert, with whom he completed the Ironman Florida 70.3.

“I don’t think anything can slow Chris down,” says his mother Beverly, “he’s also competed in 3 Spartan Races with the group Special Compass out of Florida.  They put him in a special harness and piggy back him over obstacles.”

Also in the works is fundraising for a better chair that fits Chris’ size.  Curtis says that’ll reduce a lot of the discomfort that Chris endured during the race.  Custom specialty chairs, like the one Team Liza was kind enough to loan them can cost upwards of 12 thousand dollars.

According to the team, Cozumel is a great location for PC Ironman competitions, since Cozumel is so inclusive and if everything goes according to plan, the island should see Curtis, Chris, and a new chair back for 2023.

Special thanks to Renita West, Curtis B. Anderson, Beverly Hill and Chris Kemp for their contributions to such a heartwarming Cozumel IM story.  We’ll also post updates on the fundraising progress on the Cozumel 4 You FB group.

Pjs & Panties Before the Cozumel Ironman

Curtis & Chris in Action

“¡Chris me animaba!

At the Finish Line
