Cozumel Sargassum Cleanup

Nearly 8 Tons of Sargassum Cleaned off Cozumel’s Western Coast

Cozumel’s recent windy weather have caused not only port closures but the strong windy has started to blow Sargassum seaweed onto the eastern shores.

In fact, the passing of “Cold Front 32” pushed the sargassum towards shore, earlier than expected.

Workers from Zofemat (the agency that monitors the federal maritime terrestrial zone) as well as municipal Civil Protestation have been hard at work cleaning the stinky seaweed off Cozumel’s downtown, or Western coast.

To provide an example, nearly 8 tons of sargassum was removed from Cozumel’s downtown fiscal pier and the area around the fountain of the divers located on R.E. Melgar Avenue.

Municipal authorities have announced that the recent infestation is far from over, however both Federal and Local agencies remain committed to maintaining as much sargassum-free areas as possible.

Cozumel Sargassum Cleanup
